ON CAMPUS CHANGES ON CAMPUS CHANGES ON CAMPUS CHANGES ON CAMPUS CHANGES
The Front Gate Can Close?
It’s 12:05, you are really tired, and you
are rejoicing because you are finally on
that last stretch back to campus. As
you approach the back gate, you see
that it is LOCKE Dj and now you have
to walk around campus to the front
gate, and then all the way to...LLCII!
You are tempted to jump the gate, but
you realize that that would be very
unladylike or would it? Well, no more!
Spelman College has gone through
some welcomed changes since
students left last May.
According to Mr. Steve Bowser, Chief
of Campus Police, the back gate will
be open 24 hours beginning on Friday,
September 28, and the front gate will
close at 12:15 a.m. during the week
(Mon - Thurs) and 10:50 p.m. on the
weekends (Fri - Sun). This change was
implemented because the back gate
leads to a number of resources that we
utilize on a day-to-day basis and it
would also give security a better patrol
of the area.
Now Spelman women don't have to
worry about parking their cars in a
somewhat deserted lot, rushing back
from the MARTA station, or fast food
chains in fear that the back gate will
close before their return. One
sophomore said that this change is for
the better because she is constantly
worrying about the safety of her car in
the back lot. A junior said, "it just
makes common sense." In addition to
the thrilled students, there are relieved
faculty and staff members.
Dean Hill is thrilled with the idea and
said that "the decision to keep the back
gate accessible 24 hours was prompted
by student requests." Mr. Bowser
commented that “the change will
provide more advantages for the
students and security alike, and would
eliminate students being caught in the
more vulnerable areas around campus"
such as the dark corner of Henry and
Greensferry Streets. A couple of
students last year were held up at
gunpoint on that corner. And others
have been harassed or followed by
strangers in cars.
New Phones Reach Out And Save
"Hello, thank you for calling Spelman
College. May I help you?"
"Would you please connect me with
extension 318."
"Please hold."
RING, RING, RING, RING, RING....
"Where can she be? I need to talk to
my chemistry professor!"
Have no fear, voice mail is here! Now
you can reach your professors even
when they are out of the office due to
the new answering service that every
professor has through their office
phones. So feel free to call, and if
they are not in, leave your concerns
after the beep.
Dorm Computers
The class of 1994 don’t have to worry
about making those mad dashes to the
computer center only to find that there
isn’t a computer available. Now, all
they have to do is walk down to their
study lounges.
There are new computers in every
Freshman residence hall as well as
Bessie Strong, LLCII, and Manley. Ms.
Joi Bostic, Resident Director of Abby
Hall, is the contact person over the
residence hall computers. She said
that "the computers were put in the
residence halls to provide students with
more resources."
Bostic went on to say, “I encourage
students to give suggestions as to what
they would like to have on the
computers. Also, the computers will
remain open for 24 hours beginning
Wednesday, October 3."
This was coordinated by the Living and
Learning Program under the direction
of Dr. Fleda Mask Jackson.
Preventing a Sticky Situation
by Leslie Black and Nicole Williams
Have you ever been in a hurry to get to class, parking in the
first available space, later returning to find a large yellow and
black parking violation sticker on the side of your car? Consider
yourself lucky that your vehicle was not towed. According to the
Spelman Department of Public Safety, any vehicle parked in
violation of Spelman College Campus’ parking policies will be
towed at the owner’s expense without exception. This is to
control the tremendous demand on the limited parking spaces
available on and off campus.
In order to park your vehicle legally on campus, it is necessary
to register your vehicle with the Spelman Department of Public
Safety. Be prepared to present proof of on-campus housing,
Junior or Senior classification, and a 1990-91 student
identification card. This will enter you in the lottery for one of
the 90 on- campus parking permits, and the remaining students
will receive an off-campus parking permit.
Ninety students had until 3:00 p.m. Monday, September 17, to
determine their eligibility for the on-campus parking permits they
won in the lottery. The Department of Public Safety waited an
extra hour to give the remaining eight students a chance to pick
up their permits. When these students did not show up, their
permits went to the next eight students who were not part of the
90 to qualify for on-campus parking permits. The process will
continue until all on-campus permits are distributed. To
determine your eligibility, stop by the Department of Public
Safety. As of Thursday, September 20, five on-campus parking
permits were available.
Parking is limited to designated areas. It is prohibited to park
on campus where the curb is painted yellow or where "No
Parking" signs are present. Parallel park only where lines clearly
indicate parallel parking. Students with "off campus" permits
are allowed to park on campus during the following hours:
Weekdays: (Mon - Thurs)
5:30 p.m. - 7:45 a.m.
Weekends: (Fri - Mon)
5:30 p.m. - 7:45 a.m.
In addition, vehicles are subject to be towed when they present
a safety hazard, or are left unattended for more than five days
appearing to be abandoned. If your vehicle has been impounded
call the Department of Public Safety at 525-6401.
If you received the yellow Parking Violation sticker here is a
helpful tip on how to remove it. Soak a towel with warm water,
place it on the sticker for approximately five minutes, and then
attempt to remove the sticker. For more information on parking
rules and regulations, visit the Department of Public Safety in
Upton Hall.
