The 1990-91 school year is in full swing and the
officers of the Spelman Student Government
Association are ready to work. The SGA officers
have looked ahead and predicted what this year
holds for Spelman students. Most officers agree
that this year will bring better communication
between the SGA and Spelman students.
President Felicia Lasley, C’91, a political science
major from District Heights, Maryland, foresees a
year with better relations between the student
body, SGA, and the administration. She feels that
along with her "excellent staff she can make the
SGA a vehicle for the students and the
administration to facilitate a productive year.
Successfully dealing with student complaints and
issues is a goal Lasley hopes to attain during the
‘90-'91 school year.
One of Lasley’s main targets is to reduce
animosity and increase sisterhood among the
classes.
"Before you belong to any organization, you are
Spelman sisters," said Lasley.
Shawna Green, C'91, vice president, predicts that
this will be a fruitful year also. Green, an English
major from Brooklyn, New York, hopes to create
awareness of issues that concern African-
American women and further community service
involvement along with External Affairs Board co
chairs Dometrice Clemmons and Lisa Cylar.
Green says the main problem that exists between
the SGA and students is lack of communication.
In order to be informed about campus events,
Green states "we all must take an active part."
As vice president, Green is also the freshman
class advisor and feels that the class of 1994 are
"DIVAS in the making!"
"Despite low enrollment this year, the SGA will
perform above and beyond what is expected,
says treasurer Stephanie L. Jackson, C’91, a math
and education major from Hillcrest Heights,
Maryland.
Because the SGA operates on a fixed budget,
Jackson states,'The best I can do for Spelman
students is devise the most cost effective and
profitable fundraisers."
As parliamentarian, Katrina Myers, C’92, says she
will make sure that all meetings will be conducted
in an orderly manner. She will also address the
concerns of the student body. Myers wants to
revise the current constitution so officers and
students will clearly understand how each SGA
officer should serve the student body.
This year’s SGA is a group of past SGA members
and we have proved we can do the job," says
Myers, an English major from Memphis,
Tennessee.
Like Myers, Tracy Summers, C’91, recording
secretary, feels efficiency in SGA meetings will help
solve student concerns. Summers says that the
SGA should "act as representatives" of Spelman
students.
Summers, a political science major says, “As an
SGA member, I feel that we should be more
accessible and more accountable to the students."
Corresponding secretary Faedra Chatard, C’92,
plans to begin a SGA newsletter informing
students of exactly what the student government
is doing. This newsletter will be produced by
Chatard and secretaries of other campus
organizations. Chatard feels that in the past,
students have not been fully informed about the
SGA’s activities and she hopes the newsletter will
solve this problem.
The communication between the SGA and
students should improve," said Chatard.
The co-social chairs of the SGA are Richelle
Jordan, C’92, and Stacey Byers, C’91. They plan
to present some type of cultural or social activity
at least every other week. The co-social chairs
are open to any student ideas related to social
events.
Jordan, an English major says, This year has
gotten off to a good start with more activities and
more student involvement."
Tiffany LeBlanc, C’92, and Helene Archibold, C’92,
co-publicity chairs, will implement new ideas to
make certain student concerns reach the SGA and
vice versa.
A suggestion box will be placed near the SGA
office to deliver students’ suggestions to the
student government officers.
Students will be kept abreast of activities through
new commuter student mailboxes and on-campus
student post office boxes. LeBlanc, a native of
New Orleans, comments, "Students will be
informed well ahead of time for the SGA events."
