A drowsy August afternoon, the
light shimmering through the dense
leaves of the broad spreading beech
trees ; a figure lying upon the grass
holding in his hand a Magazine—
not too heavy—just heavy enough
for easy holding—the Cosmopolitan,
for August f just the sort of reading
matter for a nffdsummer afternoon—
lull of attractive illustrations; scenes
and life in the far off I’hillipine Is
lands, with an experience of an
earth-quake ; photographs on the At
lantic. Beach accompanying a charm
ing sketch of Jersey’s “Salt Water
Jhiy,” by Hamlin Garland; charm
ing Spanish bits by the artist Chase;
lovely vistas, and enticing groves, il
lustrating a California Farm Village,
in which Col. Fitzsimmons describes
the growth and development of a
model community of fruit farms.
You should not fail to read the Cos
mopolitan.
The Cai.iioknian—For July
comes as usual splendidly illustrated,
'Hie topics are generally peculiar to
the locality of the magazine and all
the better for that ; such as, “In the
Yosemite ;” “Game fishes of the Pa
cific;” “Phoenix of jkrizona;” “A
Southern Californian Mountain Rail
road ;” “'l’he Schools of San Francis
co ;” “My Studio at Monterey
“Among the Redwoods,” and “Local
Questions of the Day.” But there
are otluh's as “The Florence of the
English Poets;” “Ponipei;” “As the
dry Turtugas During the War.”
Pi ni u n r—A monthly, just be
gun, from Boston, 182.00 a year, in
which are discussed such topics as
these : Financial Advertising, Ideal
Advertising versus Advertising;
Advertising as a constitutional heri
tage; Profitable Publicity; Adver
tising \\ ngons and Carriages ; When
to stop Advertising, What is good
Advertising, and much more. This
Magazine is prettily adorned with
the faces of those who have come to
the front as advertisers or as writers
along the lines upon which they
write.
There is nothing that reminds us
more forcibly of the flight of time
than the coining of the magazines,
i'or the reason, probably, that they
.ire dated a month ahead. For in- i
stance, here in the middle of July I
we have the August Quiver, so that :
before .August is actually upon us i
wo feel its presence by this pleasant '
reminder. The number before us is
quite up to the standard of this mag
azine.
The Magazine of Art for .August,
is one of the most attractive yet is
sued. It will find its way to many
a frame to hang in the music room
of the young lady and also the young
men readers of this excellent period
ical. If you do not get it send $3.50
to Cassell Publishing Company, N.
Y. for it.

THE CHRISTIAN INDEX: THURSDAY, JULY 28. 1892.
Written for The Index.
PROPORTIONATE PAYING.
I have just read with special
sure the article of Bro. AV. C. Luther,
on a kindred subject to the above.
It started a train of reflection which
I venture to add. How much owest
thou? is an exceedingly practical
question to the Christian who is an
xiously searching for the path of
duty, and specially timely during the
agitation of this centennial year.
That we owe to the cause of
Christ a part of our income, no in
telligent disciple will deny.
That we are under special obliga
tion to pay our debts to God is
equally evident. It is the boldest
presumption to ask God so to pros
per the labor of our hands that we
may pay the debts we owe to man.
AVhen we have given no serious
thought to the debts we owe him,
much less pay them.
How are we ever to pay what we
owe Him, unless he gives us some
idea of the amount of our indebted
ness? I should hesitate long before
charging God with such slackness in
dealing with the servants in his vine
yard. If a fellowman should say to
me, pay me what thou owest! and
and had never given me any idea of
my indebtedness, I should turn my
back on him with a clear con
science.
I believe that God has given us a
definite basis for the annual settle
ment of our financial obligations to
Him. If we look to “revelation,”
and not to “reason,” for that basis,
wo shall find that the “truth” of our
gross income is the minimum.
Above that is room enough for free
will offerings, and the glorious free
dom of the gospel dispensation
which has been so much abused.
God dealt with I lis people of Is
rael as children and gave to them
specific laws. He demanded tithes
from the first fruits of the land. It
impressed upon their minds their de
pendence upon Him for temporal as
well as spiritual prosperity. None
were excused. 'Die priest at the al
tar and the peasant alike must bring
their tithes. These tithes also kept
up the Temple, service.
Now, when the ends of the ages
are upon us, where we need as much
as they to be reminded of our depen
dence when our temple service must
be kept Sit home; when our Saviors
command, Go ye! kept back to the
last as if to burn it into our minds
and hearts by the solemnity of the
surroundings, is ringing into our
ears and the. opened doors of the na
tions are inviting us to come, does
any Christian, can any Christian sup
pose for a moment, that less is de
manded of us to-day, than was de
manded of Israel? To ask the ques
tion would seem a sufficient an
swer.
I am persuaded that if even al
the preachers in our Southern Zion
woilld adopt this scriptural and
business-like method of paying tvhat
they owe into the Lord’s treasury
our boards would at least be relieved
of the painful necessity of borrow
i ing money at the beginning of each
Convention year.
I unite w ith Bro. Luther in asking
you to give this method a fair trial
and I am sure you will never be
willing to return to the old haphaz
ard way of paying into the Lord’s
treasury, which would not be toler
ated by our fellowmen. When the
preachers are converted the laymen
will be enlightened.
Bro. Luther closes his excellent
article by asking who will join him
in this method of proportionate pay-
I ing. I have tried it for more than
six years, taking out the tenth when
ever money has been received and
putting it in a box, properly labelled
apart from all other funds. For
reasons which need not be mention
here, after carefully considering the
matter, I decided one year ago that
I was released from that obligation
for a year. But a habit is a habit,
you know, and I soon found it would
i be denying myself too much pleasure
to take the old path. G. W. Hurt.
