ABSOLUTES PURE
COMMENDATIONS.
During the past month we have |
had many good brethren to speak in ■
the most commendable terms of the I
merit of the Index. We have had
many letters from brethren in differ
ent parts of the state, to the same ef
fect, and from other states. We
would be gratified to give names,
but they were not intended by the
authors to be published and we with
hold names.
One of our oldest brethren, who
has worked for the Index and read it
closely for probably the past fifty
years said to us last week. “'The In
dex now is better than at any time
in its existence. Certainly a very
high compliment, and one we appre
ciate.
An advertiser from Arkansas writ
ing a private letter'd take great
pleasure in reading the Index, and
want to say the change you have
made in it is excellent, it is now all
right and I regard it as one of our
best papers.
A brother from Texas, formerly a
Georgian, says:
The last issue of The Index is a
gem—a cyclopedian birdseye view'
of Baptist men and measures old
Georgia. Like wine the paper im
proves with age. Like the righteouß“it
brings fruit in old age, is fat and
flourishing.” “Excelsior”
A good Brother enclosing an ar
ticle addressed to the Editor of the
Index says: I am in the dark as to
w'ho you are of late but you have
been doing the work with remarkable
success. I feeljliko congratulating you
afresh each week.”

A TEACHERS INFLUENCE.
The teacher of a class in a Sabbath
School cannot understand how
great is bis of her influence. A writ
er in Sunday School Times tells of a
boy who was severe in his coimL ni
nation of others because of their incon.
sistencies, ns they appear to him, as
Christians. He was asked if he ever
knew one who came up to his stan
dard. He said: “Yes when a boy I
had a Sunday School Teacher who 1
believe was a devoted Christian.”
It is possible bis teacher never knew'
but that her words fell on unheeding
ears; for, probably, that careless, fun
loving boy never let her know that
he thought at all of what she said to
him. And yet, after all tin so years,
he remembers her counsels, and re
spects her sincerity in trying to lead
him to Christ; and she is to him the
embodiment of all that a Christian
should be. He has not yet followed
her teachings, for he lias not, confess
ed Christ as his Savior; but God, who
is faithful, will not forget that labor
of love, but will bring this soul to
faith in’ Christ yet, as a reward of
this woman’s prayer and efforts.

: PEASE KEEP BEFORE THE PEOPLE
RESOLUTIONS OF THE CENTENNIAL
COMMITTEE OF THE SOUTHERN
BAPTIST CO NVE N T ION.
[Adopted June 22d and 23d, 1892]
* * * # * * «
Resolved, That it is the sense of
this Committee that the words “Per
manent Centennial Fund of $250,000,
as used in our last report to the
Southern Baptist Convention, were
not intended to designate an endow
ment fund the interest of which only
shall be used, but a fund for “Bible
translation, chapel building, a church
edifice fund, and other permanent
work.” If, threforc, any donor of a
special sum shall see fit to direct
that his gift be invested and only
the interest be expended, his wishes
must be sacredly observed, but,
without such specific directions
these gifts will be turned over to the
Board for the benefit of their work,
and the Boards will bo authorized
and expected to expend the said
funds as the occassion may require, in
work of a permanent character
connected with their missionary
operation
1 * * * * • • «
Resolved, That this Centennial
, Committee respectfully recommend
I to the Boards to use all proper meth
ods, by circulars, by instruction to
their agents, and by use of their own
publications and the denominational
papers generally, to make clear to all
our brethren that Centennial contri
butiumfmay be either for support
ami enlargement of the present work
1 of Boards or for the fund for perma
nent work at the option of the do
nors and thatit is understood that
only those contributions specifically
designated for the latter fund will
be put. to the credit of that fund.

Resolved, That the representatives
of this Committee be hereby in
structed, in advocating the interests
and claims of the Centennial, to em
phasize the idea of enlarged opcra-

for permanent work, and to strive
constantly to uplift our people
to a higher plane of living for Chris
and giving systematically for the

WOUNDS FROM FRIENDS.
Some of the deepest, most painful
I wounds that we receive are from
.those whom wo regard as friends.
We expect to be wounded by our
’ enemies. We are on our guard lest
> w e do get wounded by such ones.
But we are likely to be off our guard
when among those whom wc esteem
as friends. Why should we be bus
pieious of our friends? What is
more nutural than to believe and !
feel that our friends would help us 1
' and not hurt us, would give advan
tage to us rather than take advan
tage of us? This is certainly the
way it should be. But is it so?
Sometimes it is and many times it is
not. We have been obliged to learn
by pungent experience that some
whom we have long regarded as
being our best friends have finally
shown themselves capable of doing
us vastly more harm than our open
enemies. We have been struck har
der blows by our friends than we
have by our enemies, and that too
without just provocation. The fol
lowing are significant words, found
in Zech. 13: 6, “What are these
wounds in thine hands?” The an
swer is, “Those with which I was
wounded in the house of my
friends.” Have you not heard of
parents, who, after having turned
their property over to their son, in
their old age, have been cast off by
him, to die at last in the almshouse?
i Oh, what cruel wounds have thus
been inflicted upon the dear parents
who had toiled many a year and by
economy secured enough for old age,
and then, trusting to the fidelity, not
i to say love, of the child they had
anxiously reared, have been finally
thrust out of old homo by him! To
THE CHRISTIAN INDEX: THURSDAY, JULY 28. 1892.
what depths of despicable meanness
will those who ought to be best
friends descend! And not only has
this been the case, as between par
ents and children, but others, trust
ing implicitly to those who have
vowed unalterable friendship to
them, have been stabbed to death by
them at last. C. H. Witheebe.

A NOTABLE BEGINNING OF A GREAT
REVIVAL.
Many years ago, Rev. J. M. Scott,
deceased, at a hundred years, was
sitting in my father’s house, one Sab
bath afternoon, reading in silence
from a bundle of associational minutes."
Suddenly he read aloud, that at
a meeting of association, at old Bush
River Church, (ten miles from New
berry, S, C.) the preacher of the in
troductory sermon, having gone
through the preliminary part of the
service, had just announced his text,
when the rain poured down on the
board roof of the house so heavily as
to drown his voice. Some brother
rose, and lifting his voice above the
roar of the storm, proposed that they
all kneel down and pray that God
pour out his Holy Spirit upon the
people as he was pouring the rain
on the earth. The place where they
were met was shaken as at Pente
cost, a great awakening begun, and
so many thousands, as it spread far
and w ide over many districts, con
verted, that I am afraid to trust my
memory in the matter. Will Dr. T.
M. Baily, S. (J. or some other one,
make search for the minute referred
to ? I think the association was

before 1820. E. B. Teague.

SWAMPS
Are not the only abode of malaria.
You find it everywhere, even in lo
calities where atmosphric and sanita
ry conditions seem to bo unfavorable
to its development. The universa
remedy for and preventive of the
dire complaint is Hostetter’s Stomach
Bitters. Wherever the inaldy assumes
its most virulent form, and whether
it be chills and fever, bilious remit
tent, dumb ague or ague cake, the
Bitters is most popular and consti
tutes the best means of protection
and cure. From Maine to the Isth
mus of Panama, in Guatemala, Mex
ico, South America, and the tropics
this truly famous medicine has won
“golden opinions” from all conditions
and classes in more than a meta
phorical sense. For debility, indiges
tion, constipation, rheumatism, in
somnia, neuralgia, liver and kidney
trouble it is highly efficacious. Use
it with persistence.

COLIC AND CHOLERA MORBUS.
Colic, cholera morbus, and many
other affections of the stomach and
bowels prevalent at this time of
year are due to two causes. First,
the depressing effect of the hot
weather upon the nervous system,
and second, the use of green fruit,
cucumbers, melons, and etc. No one
is safe from painful and even danger
ous attacks of these affections unless
unusual precautions are taken at this
time of year. A tablespoon of Pe
ru-na taken before each meal is a
complete protection against these
maladies. Pe-ru-na is not only a
preventive of colic, cholera morbus
cramp,stomach ache summer diarroea
cholera, but it is also a prompt cure
for these diseases. Where the attack
is very severe and painful a wine
glass of Pe-ru-na should be taken at
once, followed by two tablespoonful
does until complete relief is obtain
ed. This never fails in a single case.
In cases of less severity a tablespoon
ful every hour is sufficient. No one
should neglect the precaution of tak
ing a dose of Pe-ru-na before each
meal, until the hot season is
over.

weather sent free to any address by

Christ came as the Saviour of
man’s body as well as bis soul, says
Rev. S. F. Hotchkin. The body of
the Christian is the servant of the
soul, and should display the work
ings of the master. The eye is the
window' of the soul, and should be
single for God’s glory, and as Christ’s
eye looked heavenward, should gaze
in the same direction. The hands
should be used to glorify God in
proper service in worldly things,
doing with might what is found to
do, or in the case of the clergyman
in holy sacraments, or the organist
in praise, or the religious writer in
handing on divine truth. Hands
lifted in prayer are a worthy offering
to God, w hen they are joined, with
“the calves of the lips,” in sacred ut
terances. Alms-giving is another
holy act for human hands, and makes
man like God, whose open hand
filleth all things living with plen
teousness. In the resurrection the
hand that gave the cup of cold water
shall touch the golden harp in a new’
and higher service. The feet of
those who in missionary work bear
the tidings of Christ’s salvation are
beautiful below, and shall tread gol
den streets above.
A CHANCE TO MAKE MONEY.
I have strawberries, cherries and
peaches fresh as when picked, I use
the“ California Cold Process,” do not
heat or seal the fruit; put it up cold,
and it keeps perfectly fresh. Can
put up a bushel in ten minutes, costs
about a cent a quart. I sold direct
ions to over 100 families last week
everyone seems willing to pay SI.OO
when they see beautiful samples. I
got directions from The Health
Fruit Co., Omaha, Neb. Thev mail
samples and complete directions to
anyone, for 17 two cents stamps,
which is the actual cost of samples,
postage advertiseing, etc. Times
are so hard, I think it my duty to
give my experiecce for the benefit of
others for why cannot any one make
two or three hundred dollars, round
home, in a few davs in this way?

A MOTHER’S LAMENT.
Did you ever see a mother who
had not control over or influence
with her daughter. It is, indeed, a
sad picture. Says the Christian Her
afd:
“I wish that you would talk to my
daughter, sir. Perhaps you can
have some influence for good over
her. She won’t listen to anything that
I can say.” What sad words were
these to be wrung from the lips of a
mother! “She won’t hear me!” Alas!
who, then will she hear? She will
not listen to that mother whose eyes
watched over her infancy, which
have grown dim with many tears
shed for her sake—she will not listen
to the mother whose heart has never
beat one throb that was not true to
her real interests. The self-willed
girl knows not half the anguish con
tained in that one expression and la
ment—“ She won’t hear me!”
