T HIS Magazine is principally intended to fur
nish a collection of popular songs and the most
spirited an'd amusing articles that appear in the For
eign Comic Annuals and periodicals which arc not
generally accessible to the American reader, but
which abound with-tho most laughable and amusing
displays of genuine wit and humor. Many of the
articles conbine in an eminent degree profit with
pleasure, and amusement with instruction.
It will contain selections from “ Doings in Lon
don,” one of the best collections of valuable and in
structive facts ever published. It furnishes i
large octavo volume of upwards of four hundred pa
ges, an astonishing display of the Day and Night
Scenes, the Frauds, Frolics, Manners and Depravi
ties of great cities; written as the author states, with
an aim to show vice and deception in all their real
deformity, painting in true colors 4he fascinating al
lurements, tho mischievous frolics and vicious hab
its of the profligate, the heedless and debauchee, in
order to put the thoughtless on their guard, and
warn youths of the quicksands that beset them.
Tho “ Doings in London,” detail the adventures of
Peregrine Wilson, the son of a wealthy gentleman
residing in the country. Possessing an irresistible cu
riosity to visit the great metropolis of which he had
hv.utl and read such extraordinary narrations, Pere
grine considered himself peculiarly fortunate in ob.
taming a competent guide for his ramifies, one thor-
ouglily versed in the ways of the town, and in whose
knowledge and integrity he could confide. “ The
world,” said Mentor, “ on which you are about en
tering, you probably figure to yourself smooth and
quiet, as one of the iakes in your native valleys, but
you will find it a sea foaming with tempests and
boiling with whirlpools; you will be sometimes
overwhelmed by the waves of violence, and some-
tims dashed against the rocks of treachery. Amidst
wrongs and frauds, competitions and anxieties, you
will wish a thousand times for the quiet of your
own home, -and willing to quit hope to lie free from
fijur." “ l)o not seek to deter me from my purpose,”
said Peregrine; “ I am anxious to see what thou
hast seen. Whatever ha the consequence of my ex
periment, I am resolved to judge with my own eyes
of the various conditions of men, and then to make
deliberately my choice of life.”
Their interesting, amusing, and instructive ram
bles, are detailed in the pages from which the most
surprising and curious portions are selected for the
work now in- the course of publication by tlie sub
scribers.
Among the endlesB variety of subjects which sur.
prise and amuse the reader, are advertising for Wives
and Husbands, Deceptions in Auction Rooms, Dis
honesty of Bakers, Brewers, Miik-ihpn, and others.
History of beggars, their impositions, merry doings,
Ac.; Doings in Billingsgate and Bowstreet, Frauds
of Black Legs, boxing, robberies, murders and oth-
er crimes committed in hrothels; bullies, Jack Ketch,
Coffee-Houses, House of Commons, Bagnios, Court,

itors, Cut Purse. London Dandies, Doings in a Hell,
Dram Drinking, English sports and Pastimes, Faiirs,

of Fleet Prison, Fortune Tellers, Hoaxes, Horse Ra
ces, Stealing Ac. .Stocks, Jobbers, Law and Law.
yers, Marriage, Dreadful Doings in Newgate, with a
description of that celebrated Prison; Nigjit. Consta
bles, St. James’ Palace poisonous doings of pastry
Cooks, King’s Bench Prison, infamous doings of
prostitutes and procurcses, sailors, sharpers, State of
society, Westminster Abbey, adulterations of wine
and other liquors with an immense variety of other
scenes and subjects too numerous to enumerate in a
prospectus, but which cannot fail of exciting the
most intense interest, and proving that truth is
stronger than fiction.
In addition to all of which will be inserted sever
al thousand popular songs, sentimental, ancient, am
atory, naval, military, sporting, patriotic, comic, and
humorous; amusing tales, diverting recitations, po.
lice reports, anecdotes, epigrams, puns, conundrums,
