of the truth of the charges they con

the great midst torn of scoundrelism
into which the country has drifted.
My progress in compositorship was
at first slow. I had to feel mv way.
A defective adjustment of thc lines to
a uniform degree of tightness was my
greatest trouble, hut this was got over.
The art of w orking my press had next
to he acquired, and in this there was
no difficulty. After nu interval of fifty
years, I recollect the delight I experi
enced in working off my first impres
sion ; thc pleasure since of seeing hun
dreds of thousands of sheets pouring
ing from machines in which I claim an
interest being nothing to it! If the
young and thoughtless could only he
made to know this—the happiness, the
dignity of honest labor conducted in a
spirit of self-reliance; thc insignificance
and probably temporary character of
untoward circumstances while there is
vouth, along with a willing heart; the
proud satisfaction of acquiring by per
severing industry instead of by com
passionate donation—how differently
would they act!
I think there was a degree of infat
uation in my attachment to that jang
ling, creaking, wheezing little press.—
Placed at the only window in my apart
ment, within a few feet ot my bed, 1
could see its outlines in the silvery
moonlight when I awoke ; and there,
in the glowing dawn, did its figure as
sume distinct proportions. W hen day
light came fully in, it was impossible
to resist the desire to rise and have an
hour or two of exercise at the little
machine.
With an imperfect apparatus, _Jte
execution of my song-book was far from
good. Still it was legible in the old
ballad and cheap book style, and I was
Cheering News, if True.—There
was a cheering report afloat on the
streets yesterday relative to the Augus
ta and Hartwell Railroad. The rumor
ran tliat Col. Win. Wadley and the
Central Railroad Company were mak
ing arrangements by which they will
secure the charter of the Augusta and
Hartwell Railroad Company and com
plete the line as rapidly as possible.
We suppose that Chapman & Co.
have at last become satisfied that they
can do nothing with the enterprise and
are anxious to sell out and quit. Hie
State has promised liberal aid—to
which the company is justly entitled
and the citizens and counties along the
line will subscribe largely when the
road passes into proper hands. With
such a man as Col. Wadley at its
head, the success of the company is at
once assured. We earnestly hope that
the report is true.—Chronicle <fc Senti

A Horrible Hangiso Affair.—
The Wilmington Journal of yesterday
contains the following particulars of
the hanging at Sumter on Friday last
of Taylor Wilson, for the murder of
Thomas Keith :
Thc gallows were arranged by the
Radical sheriff of the county very pe
culiarly, an anvil l>eitig attached to the
end of the rope, which was expected to
fall when the rope was cut aud thus
break the neck of the condemned man
by suddenly jerking him up instead of
allowing him to drop. The thing
worked very badly, Wilson being rais
ed from tlie platform a few incites
only, and very gradually. He suffo
cated slowly for a little lest* than five
minutes, and then succeeded in raising
his hand and drawing himself up by
the rope. At this juncture came the
most horrible part of the whole affair,
the sheriff'advancing towards him and
holding his hands to his side until he
was too weak to raise himself again,
and was compelled to endure a slow
death. The affair was described to us
as one of the most horrible on record.
