Class Tree.—The Class tree
celebration of the class of 1878, took
place on Friday last at the University.—
▲ tree had been previously planted in
the Campus, between the halls of the two
societies, and the members of the gradu
ating clais met and proceeded to the
chapel, where the exercises were opened
with prayer by the Chancellor. Two
originial songs entitled “ Along the
Pathway" and A few more To-morrow a"
were sung. These were from the pen of
Dr. Lipscomb. Mr. 8. B. Adams of Sa
vannah as Orator, Mr. C. E Harman, of
Atlanta, as class Historian, and Mr. B.
F. Payne, of Marietta as Prophet, each ac
quitted themselves admirably. The class
and the audience then proceeded to the
tree, where “ Old Franklin” and “ Good
old Freshman” were sung. Each member
of the class threw dirt around the tree,
and the calumet of peace was smoked.—

Too much credit cannot be given to
the young men of Athens for the results
of the election last Friday. The working

were at the polls all day, using every
honorable means to elect the nominee,

NEW LAWS.
The Legislature at its last session
passed two laws which everybody should
know. One is, that when a planter gives
a merchant or cotton factor a lien on any
property or for supplies tu make his
crop, that if said property or ■ rop is sold
and not applied to the payment of said
debt, such guilty party is liable to be
put in jail for one year.
The other law is to the effect that

Medical Attention to the
Poon.—Dr. H. H. Carlton proposes to
•devote from 8 to 9 o'clock every morning
to examining and prescribing for such
indigent persons in Town as are unable
to pay for medical services.
This offer reflects great, credit upon
Carlton, and on the profession of
which he is an ornament, whose members
dispense a vast amount of service from a
sense of humanity, and without hope of
reward. We learn that the city council
propose to provide fox the payment of
bills for prescriptiohs made by Dr. Carl
ton in the practice reierred to. This is
a proper movement. The poor we have
always with us, and the obligation to
thou when sick is only u small part of
what every civilized community owes to

The School Book War.—Foi
tlie last year we have been receiving a
perfect fusilade of missives from rival
publishers of Southern school books.—
While we sympathize in nny and every
enterprise that has in view the publica
tion of books suited to our schools, and
free from the grave objections which ex
ist in many text Imoks long used in our
educational institutions, wc have never
been favored with a copy of any of the
books issued by either of these compan
ies, and there is therefore no good rea
son why we should volunteer an opinion
of their merits, or espouse the claims of
one over the other. Athens is an admit
ted educational centre in Georgia. The
endorsement of Worcester’s Dictionary
by the University, has already given an
impetus to the sale of that great work
throughout the State, and we appreciate
the interest manifested hy other book
publishers to secure publicity to their
enterprises here. Our columns are too
much occupied, however, to permit our
interest in the subject to draw us into
their controversies.
What Temperance has done for Athens.
In Athens there are two Temper
ance Societies: the Good. Templars
and Knights of Jericho; combined
number about 150. Before the organ
ization of these societies an average of
200 drinks were taken daily by men
who now belong to these societies. At
an average of 15 cents a drink, we
have $30 per day, $210 per week,
$840 per month and ten thousand and
eighty dollars per annum. Is it not
encouraging to us to know that by our
efforts to advance the Temperance
cause, we not only save many men
from drunkard’s graves and many
souls from dark oblivion, but save
over ten thousand dollars per annum ;
a great portion of which is given hy
our noble brothers and sisters, to assist
in sustaini lg the Heiven -blessed and
honor merited societies of Good Tem
plars and Knights of Jericho ? If I
were an orator, I know I could say
much on this subject that would inter-
est my brothers and sisters; but I
leave this subject to those of our order
who possess the intellect and oratori
cal powers requisite to advancing such
a flow of eloquence as will make every
heart feel that it is a great blessing to
the man or woman who can say I am
truly a Good lemplar, or I am forever
a Knight of Jericho.

Explanatory.—We promised to

assault on the Editor of this paper by
Mr. R. II. Lampkin last week. As the
affair—at the earnest advice of Mr. A's

investigation, he deems it proper to
withhold any further reference to the
matter until the trial. Mr. A. is able to

The Political Outlook.
From the present indications Mr. Gree
ley will be nominated or accepted by the
Baltimore Convention. We do not be
lieve one half ot the voters of Georgia
prefer to accept Greeley to a regular
Democratic nominee; but it is claimed
that 11 majority of the delegates to Bal
timore—though not instructed by the
Convention, will be for Greeley. We
agree with the Federal Union, that “ this
Greeley movement at the South lias been
got up by those politicians who have be
come heart-hungry for office, and were
willing to support any man whom they
believe would give them office. But
whatever was the cause of this move
ment there can he no doubt it has as
sumed formidable dimensions, and it
now looks ns if Greeley would be en
dorsed at Baltimore. As we have fre
quently said before, wc expect to sup
port the nominee of the Baltimore Con
vention.”
The Gu-iorious Fourth.—Our
national aniversary passed off tiuhonored
and unsung, save by a parade of the Re
lief Fire Company, colored. The Athens
Brass band was out, and made capital
music, which made us feel decidedly pa
triotic.
The editor is still unable to at
tend to his duties, and will be absent for
some lime, iit.tii he recovers from his in
juries, which are serious. lie hopes by
the time the campaign opens to be at his
post. Meantime he leaves the paper in
competent hands, and hopes his friends
will give it an increased circulation dur
ing the campaign. .
Revenue “ Irregularities.”—
We learn that sinoe Col. R. S. Taylor’s
appointment as Assistant Assessor of In
ternal Revenue, he has discovered a
a g; number of ca«es in which his pre
-deccssor. Mr. Anderson, had made col
lections, which do not appear on the
books. The amounts reach several
thousand dollars. We presume they
form an important part in the deficit
lately reported in the accounts of collec
tor Atkins, who will doubtless lie culled
on to rnuke good the accounts of his sub
ordinates.

The Watchman and the Ban
ner.—We failed to notioe the consider
ate manner in which our neighbor
two weeks ago, declined to reply to
our comments on the state of public sen
timent in this region toward Greeley, and
respecting the Clark county meeting.—
Wc fully reciprocate his desire to avoid
useless and distracting controversy. We
simply sought that the feeling of the
people of this part of the Stntc be cor
rectly understood before the Convention
met. The editor says we failed to report
him correctly. As he does not deem the
injustice serious enough to demand no
tice, we conclude it was as trivial as we
assure biin it was unintentional. In ref
erence to those terrible office seekers,
wbo he said had caused “ all -our woes,”
we quoted verbatim. To his solicitude
that the Banner stand by Democratic
principles, we need only say—et tu Brutu.
We hate fallen upon strange times it the
Watchman is to become the Banner’s
monitor of Democratic fidelity.
This zeal in behalf of Democracy, and
especially in behalf ot supporting the ac
tion of party conventions, is creditable
to our neighbor, and we hope -he may
live long enough to atone for having
spent the best part of his life in fighting
everything and everybody that savored ol
Democracy, and Democratic organization.
Wc have sought to put the Banner,
and the true Democracy of this region
right on the record, and to absolve it
and its friends from all responsibility for
the Greeley movement. That movement
may save the principles of the National
Democracy. If so, nobody will rejoice
more heartily than the Banner and its
“ impracticable” friends. If it kill* the
Democratic party and elects Grant it will
not be a funeral of our causing, so let us
on to Baltimore—and whether the can
vass lends thence to victory or back up
the freezing solitudes of Salt River, we
expect to be along, and our colors, as
ever, shall bear no “ strange device.”

Cigar making is thus described, m
brief, by the Cincinnati Commercial Re
view : “ Tbe leaf is first ‘ cased,’ by
simply being dipped in water and shak
en in the air. It is then sent up to lie
‘ stripped,’ and next the filling leaf is
put into a cutting machine, where it is
cut up and falls into pans, each hold
ing enough for one cigar. This goes
to the rolling machines to receive the
* binder,’ after which it is put into
moulds, and these into a press. On
being taken out, the embryo cigars,
called * bunches,’ are put to dry. The
hunches are then put into the hands
of cigar makers, who take them from
the moulds and put on an outside
wrapper, (the ‘binder’ forming an in
ner one) ; the head of the cigar is then
inserted into a brass head-mould,
where it receives its shape, and the
butt is then cut off by a little cutting
machine. The now-formed cigars are
placed on racks and sent to the pack
ing room, where they -are sorted into
seven shades, namely, ‘Claro,’ (two
shades) * Colorado Claro,” ‘ Colorado,’
Colorado Maduro,’ 1 Maduro,’ and
Oscuro.’ After this, the cigars are
more nicely classed and put into boxes
of 100, made of Sycamore or Cedar
wood. The brand is applied by sten
cil tools, the ink used being stencil
ink. Finally the boxes receive the
revenue stamp, and are ready for de
livery to the consumer. Attempts
have been made to evade these stamps,
but the penalty is very severe.”
