Tho Chicago Times, of Friday last,
has tho following account of a singular
incident at a funeral:
One of tho strangest occurrences hap
pened yesterday nt tho funeral of
Michael Guthrie, who wat accidently
killed the tl.iv previous on the North
western runway, which we have ever
been - called upon to ohroniole. The
family of Mr. Guthrie; consisting of a
wife and three children, bail made ox-
'tensivo arrangement* tor t he qocuintna-
dation of the friends of the deceased at
the funeral. A large number of carria
ges and a numerous assembly of mourn
ers were present wl»l»t» the undertaker,
Mr. Berry, arrived with tho hearse.—
About the’ same time, another carriage,
containing n woman richly ami fashion
ably dressed, was driven to the door.—
The woman alighted and entered tho
.hou*e. To the astonishment of tho
assembly, to nil of whom she was a
total stranger, she greeted tho children
of Guthrie as hot* own, und they in re
turn addressed her us their mother,
manifesting the greatest joy, mingled
with surprise at seeing her, The wife,
on tlm otlior hand, was eoufoHndud.—
She knew not what to say. nor what to
think of this sudden and strange ap
pearance of one who claimed also to ho
the wife of tho deceased, and .who was
addressed by hi* children as then*
mother. She knew herself to be their
stepmother, having been married to
their father in duo legal form and in
full confidence that hi* first wife was
dead. This supposition being now over
thrown by the sudden appearance of
one claiming to he that deceased wife,
the other with began to upbraid the
children for not toiling her that their
mother was living. The real mother,
(forsuch the stranger win) assured her
that tho children were not to hluino, as
they, as well us their tat her, hud reason
to believe her dead. She had deserted
her husband in the city of Si. Louis,
where they lived, and shortly afterward,
caused an announcement of hor death
to Ik* published in the newspapers or
that city. Hut nho was not dead.—
Leaving St, Loui* sho had lived in Chi
cago, not knowing that her husband
was heie, until she saw the account of
ills death published in the papers yes
terday morning. Sho had come to re
claim her children and to behold for
the lu*t time on earth the form of their
father. _

Hut tho tremendous profits which
»w flow into tha coffer* of Insolent an
ti-slavery jobbers would he kept at home
and he expended in building up and
enriching our own cities. Why has it
hsen necessary for our wholesale mer
chants to patronize the North at all?—
It is because tho retail merchants in tho
interior have shown such a persistent
determination to prefer the Northorn
umrkotathat the merchants of their
own section have uot receivod the prop
er encouragement to import their own
goods or buy them directly of the man

Merchants do not niAko trade.—
Irade makes merchants, and unless
those !h our Southern cities are pat

with them in every interest, they* can
not build up a market that will com
pete at once with Philadelphia, New

But their 'importations now from

and we have con fid nnco in their sincerity
and ability that they are “able and de

formation of suinluite of lime, thus abstract
ing olio atom of lime from ths bone*, a s,lu-
blc iiliosphate had been formed. Ill 18*7, J.
J. Alnpcs inndea series of exiierimcnts, thud)
he found, analytically, that Peruvian Guano
contained the necessary elements for Insu
ring Hi* growth of plants, !»ut not in the
right relative propitious to each other. IIo
instituted a series of experiments, practical
ly, hy whieh ho proved that one huudred
pounds of burnt bones, treated with fiity-six
jtounds of sulphuric acid, thirty-six pound*
or Peruvian Guano, twenty pound* of sul
phate of ammonia, formed a mixture evary
way superior to Peruvian Guano, and that
it would uot excite the. mu would con-
tiniiAlly add to its fertility.
IIo hud found that one barrel of Idood,
fresh from tho animal, mixed with a cord of
organic in utter, would, by fermentation, pro
duce a manure equal to a cord of well rottod
stable iiianuro. IIo further found that
nteen barrel* of blood, when dried, would
make one barrel, and that blood could bo
procured at coiuparitiwlv little cost, in cur
tain sections; thnt it could be dried by cook
ing and pressing so as topnbfuue a dry pow-
dor, and by aduiug to the nbore named in-
G edients an oqunl weight of dried hutlock’i
nod. a manure is formed one hundred pounds
of which are opual in power and lusting of-
hundred aud eighty-five pounds
of tlio best Peruvian Guano.
Since he has oilored his invention to the
farmers of the country, some filly coinpnnios
have imitated this nrticlo und-r various
names, und for the purpose of rendering it
popular, havo traduced I'rof. Mupes und his
sriielo, claiming’to make tlmtoi u superior
quality. Ev»-ry year preseuts new imitators
of this article, who iimiiutactiire an
article, using the mineral phospntes
sis. instead of tho calcined bones of animals.
Notwithstanding all this, the deiuuud for
Mopes' Nitrognnised Superphosphate
Lime has doubled.
Peruvian Guano contains an excessive
amount of ammonia, llm only uso of whh h
is to rentier water eapuble of dissolving
larger amount of tlm inorganic constituents
of tho soil, nr ns sometimes railed m net as
sn excitant. The market gardener* of New
Utrechtcoinuienced Homoyenr* ago by using
two hundredweight of gun no to tho acre,-
they are unw compelled to use twrlvo hun
drod weight of guano to produce the saint
ell'cet, Mini their laini is cvidoutly- irnjKtver
Lhetl by its use, wiiilo tlioso who havu used
the Nftrogonised Aunerphosphuto of Lime,
have otemlily found their soils to bo improv
ed. and instead of rnquiring inoro. they re-
quire les* fertilising mutorinl each year. And
this is particularly true of Tobacco und Cot
ton lands.
Among tlio ndvantages arising from tin
11*0 o| Xltroguuhod Superphosphuto are tin
followingt It carries no weed «ecd to tho
soil; it prevent* rust, aud insures the perfect
ing of plants; thus, when used on Cotton, tbo
bolls do not fall and. as by the experience of
Mr. leumis. Cot. Davis.’and Col. Goodwin
and others, it give* n greater weight p.-r acre
of cotton. For Wheat, it hni steadily pwr*
ed itself to be superior to the Peruvian Gu-
nno; when in contact with »ued, it does not
destroy it a« does tke Peruvian Guano; and
it (implies tho defHencv of tho Phospliiite
of Lime and other ingredients, produced bf
excessive reaping of grain and undue p
turage.
