The Northern Mode*
Tho Northern pajatrs nro full of lauda
tions of Mr. Grow, of Pennsylvania, for
refusing to aceopt a challenge from Mr.
Brunch, of North Carolina.
Wo entirely agree with our distinguish
p<l contemporary of tho Memphis “En
quirer,” that his tnodo of obtaining a
reputation for moral courage is so easy,
and so safe, that wo do not wonder at
tho favor into wliioh it is rapidly grow
ing. We arc barbarian enough to sus
pect a man of being a despicable cow
ard whose moral and religious scruples
. prevent him from fighting, but do not
prevent him from offering an insult
which ho knows will produce a chal
lenge. And this suspicion rises into
conviction when, as in the emus of Mr.
tlrow. the challenged party accompanies
his refusal to fight on fair terms, with
weapons of his own selection, by an
intimation that ho is prepared to do-
f.-nd him«clf against ft personal assault
which he know* will not bo made.
There is in our opinion no viler pol
troon than he who says, I will not fight
you until vou place mo in a position
where If l* kill you l shall bo justified
by the law of Holf-dofcnce, but if you
kill mo you will be hung for murder, or
if you only wound me, you will be sent
to tho Penitentiary for an assault with
intent to kill. A brave man would nev
er invito nn attack upon terms so un
equal. \{f ho was really restrained by
conscientious scruples from engaging in
a duel ho would sav so, and stop there.
To accompany it with a declaration that
he will defend himself if assailed, is to
seek a cowardly advantage, which
none but a dosperato man would give
him, and is proof conclusive that his oh-
joction to a brawl is graduated by tho
amount of personal dangor it involves.
Mr. Grow might have said, “I will not
tight,” and yet have lout no character,
but when he said, “I will fight if you
pinco mo in a position of great advant
age,” he proved himself a dastard, and
is entitled to nothing but tho scorn of
honomblo men.—Melt, Whig,
hind a tuft of dry grass, and remaining
very quiet, scorned to make himself us
small as possihlo. A slight buzzing was
board in tho air. and in a moment a
■ering on
wasp passed quickly near, hovering
the wing over his trembling victim,
much dreaded tarantula. Like some
bird of prey, the wasp remained poised
a moment, and then, quick as thought,
darted down U|x>n his enemy ami stung
him many times with great rapidity.—
Tho tarantula, smarting under the pain.
Dr. Charles Mnckay.
This English song writer, who visitod
the United States not long ago, and was
hospitably recolvcd in the South, has
long articlo in his paper the ‘Illustrated
London Nows,” on Old John llrown
which ho says:
“It is exceedingly unfortunate to tho
State of Virginia, and for the whole of
the slavuholdingSouth, that means of
escape from tho disagreeable necessity
of barging this man wore not discover
ed ; that some properly instructed jai
lor did not accidentally leave a bolt un
fastened, or that some sympathising
friend was not admitted Into his dun
geon to change clothes with him, or by
some other mode to facilitate his escape,
To executo him was the very worst pos-
aiblo denouement for the slave owners
that oouid have happened, and osnr 8
ally under olroumstances whloh betr
e(l an amount of terror on tho part
the authorities hut too suggest*
t no utter rottonnossof Southern
Dr. Mackey also favors tho world with
his opinion that tho Gcnoral Assembly
of Virginia would not order tho oxocu*
tion of thoothor prisoners; “that it will
content itself with tho first mistuko
and moke no more martyrs.” Probably
this sagacious personage has by this
time discovered that he isnota prophet.
