Whon u boy, Lord Tendertou was a singet in tho cathedral, and it is a curious circum stance that his destination in life watt changed hv disappointment. "Whon he and Mr. .lustioo Richards were going tho home circuit togothor, they wont to servioo in the cathedral; and on Rich ards commending tho voice of a singing man in tho choir, Lord Tuudorton said, “Ah! that is the only man l over envi ed. Tho Taw Paw (Mich.) -Free Press ’re lates the following, in relation to tho suicide of a disappointed lover: A young man. residing near Olivet, by by the name of Orville Wood, had been paying his addresses to a Miss Mack, whose family resides near the village of Marshall, and they were engaged, the marriage to take place soon. Tho young matt, with his intended, went to a party, where he indulged so freely in liquor as to raise objections on the part of tho young lady's parents to the con* templated union. She informed her a(linuccd that she had rather die than disobey her parents, and preferred deatli to living without him; and on Friday, tho lltli, they mutually agreed that the next Sunday evening they would meet at his brother-in-law’s, and on Sunday evening terminate their liven, one and at the same time, by tiro- arms. The same day lie unpaired to Marshall and purchased two pistols, which he louden, each with a ball and soven buckshot. At the time appointed for their meeting—Saturday evening— ho was at his brothor-in-lnw’H, and soon after the young 'Indy,-accompanied by her sister, drove up. Wood saw his in tended leap from the outlet* and /tj»* proach to the house, when he 8 top pod into tlio parlor, placed the muzzle to bis bead and tired, dropping lifeless at her feet ns she came in. Without a moment'* delay she Mtepp#tt*Wit of doors, passed around the corner oT the hoitHu, took a pi-tol from .her pocket, and was raising it to her head, when her' ■ister, who had perceived that some thing was wrong, rushed forward and caught the weapon from her grasn. On cxnming it, it was found loaded with ball and shot, as before stated. It seems that n misapprehension existed between tho lovers as to the time when tho tragedy was to take place—she un derstanding him to name Sunday in stead of Saturday evening; hut when she saw that In* hud anticipated her, she was, as her action proved, ready for tho sacrifice. Tho funeral of tho suicide took placo on Monday, tin*Oth. Home Mamtactuuks.—Texas seems about to take tho load in tho South in homo manufactures. A large amount of cabinet waro is produced in nil the towns of tins thriving State. In Rusk county carriages arc made of tlio bast workmanship and the latest styles. In othor places there aro excellent cotton and woolen factories; and flouring mills aro beginning to be numerous. For a young State, Texas lias made a very htuulsomo hogi Temptation,—The young man, as lie passes through life, advances through n long lino of tempters tanged on oithor side of him, amt tlie inevitable effect of yielding is degradation in a greater or loss degree. Contact with them tends insensibly to draw away from him some portion of the divino electric clomont with which his nature is charged, and his only mode of resisting them is to litter and to net his “no” manfully and resolutely, llo must decide at ouco, not waiting to deliberate and balance reasons; for tho youth, liko “tho woniun who deliberates, is lost.” Many de liberate without deciding; but “not to reiclvo is to resolvo.” A perfect knowl edge of man is in tho prayer, “Lend us not into temptation.” Hut temptation will come to try tho young man’s strength: and, once yielded to, tiro pow er to resist grows weaker and weaker.— Yield once, and a portion of virtue has gone. Ro-ist manfully, and the first decision will strengthen for life; repeat ed, it will become a habit.—Self lhlp.
