Upon the subject of tho requisite quali
fication for officers, It says:
"First and foremost, should como y
man of military education, and, if pos
sible, of experience. The military pro
fession furnishes a field in which men of
ordinary capacities may labor for some
years without exhausting tho soil; and
notwithstanding the contrury opinion
held by some men ot talent, there have
Leon a few practial men, liko Napoleon,
for instance, who thought officers could
only be made by much study. Besides
tho knowledge of an art, in intake* in
tho practice of which must be paid for
with death und suffering, tho education
of these moil will have tended to make
them firm, intrepid, prudent, modest,
systematic and prompt in tho discharge
of duty. They will have l>con taught
bow to command, by having learnod
how to obey. Even in tho case of our
first favorite, wo would not forget that
mon hare gono through military
schools, perhaps even through West
J’oint itself, very little impressod by
their advantages. Next should come
those who, without tho opportunities
for thorough education, have, from in
rlination, given such attention n “ * ,,n4
could to military subjects.
If men cannot bo found who have
boon educated for a particular profes
sion, or who have a natural turn for ita
requirements,"the next best thing to
bo done, whoro such knowledge or tal-
entj* wantod, it seems to us, would be
to selectmen who habitually do well
whatever they undertake. A good
piny ter, professional man, mechanic,
merchant,or of whatever employment
soever he ma> he, lot him be good
hjs Rind; never forgetting that to
an officer it is absolutely necessary that
ono should be a gentleman, it would
bo had policy, however, for any com
puny to select its officers from any ono
walk of niyii life. It will udd to tho
efficiency «f any company to have va
ried information possessed by its offi
cers, as well us members.”
