There seems to he rather a chalice of its becoming worse. If Franco who is already moving on ward in a restless, purblind slate, should ojmn her eyes wide, should givo horself fair play by accepting our coals, iron, and machinery, and, under the stimulus of a wholesome competition, should tako lo manufacturing upon a large scale, then these three millions will not be enough. France will be competing with us in tlie foreign cotton markets, stimulating still further tlie produce of Georgia and Sout h Carolina. The jump which the consumption of cotton in England has just made is hut a single leap, which may lie repeated indefinite ly. There are a thousand millions of mankind upon the globe, all of whom can be most comfortably clad in cotton. Every year now tribes and new nntions aro added lo the category of cotton wearers. There is every reason to be lieve that the supply of this universal necessity will for many years yet to come fail to keop pace with tlio de mand, and in tlie interest of that large class of our countrymen to whom cotton is bread, wo must continue to hope that tlio United Spites will ho able to supply us in years to come, with twice as much as we bought of them in years post.— Lotus raise up another market, says ‘ Anti-Slavery peoplo. So say we all. But cron Lord Brougham would notask us to believe that there is any proxi- muto hope that tlio freo cotton raised in Africa, will, within any reasont.ble time, drivo out of culture * the slave-grown cotton of America. If this be so, of what use can it ho to make irriUiting speeches in the House of Lords against a state of things by which we are con- tout to profit?’ Lord Broughum und Lord Grey are not men of such illogical minds as to bo incapable of understand ing that it is the demand of tho Eng lish manufacturers which stimulates tlie produce of slave-grown American cot ton. The) aro neither of them, wo ap prehend, so reckless or so wicked as to wish to eloso our factories and throw some two millions of our manufacturing population out of bread. Why, then, theso inconsequent and these irritating denunciations?
