.is good'os a Rormon to gossips;
Calumny.
A whisper woke the air,
\ soft, light tone, and low.
Vet barbed with shame and woe;
Ah! might It only perish there—
Nor farther go.
Hut no 1 a quick and eager ear
Caught up the little meaning sound ;
Another voice*has breathed it clear,
And so it wandered round
^rom ear to li|>v from lip to oar,
Tntil it reached a gentle heart,
riut throbbed from all the world apart,
And that It broke.
• was the only heart it found —
ie only heart! ’twas meant find,
•'non first its Accents woke ;
• reached that* gentle heart at last,
And that it broke.
Vow as it seemed to other ears,
t came a thunder-crash to hew—
aat fragile girl, so fair and gav.
.’is said a lovely humming-bird,
list dreaming in a lily lay,
V is killed by but the gun’s roport,
ime idlo hoy had fired in sport;
i exquisitely Trail its frame,
iie very sauhtl a death blow came,
anl thus her heart unused to shamo,
Shrined in t/-t Illy too ;
lor light and happy heart, that heat
Villi love and hope, so fast and sweet,
7hen first that cruel word is heard,
; Huttered like a frightened bird,
/hen shut its wings and sighed.
And, with s silent shudder, died.

All Abolitiondom will plenso give
oreathloss attention, while wo narrate
i)other incident illustrative of tho
lurrors of tho peculiar institution.—
Massing along Canal stroot tho other af-
.ernoon, we observed a group of Italian
'.tzzaroni, see-sawing to every pedes
trian. uttering gibberish to the purj>ort
.f “For the love of tho Holy Virgin,
iir, a dime;” and making at tho same
line squeaking sounds upon somo sort
i an old hand-organ. Very likolv tho
beggars wero regular professionals, itn-
poslors who make money out of tho
sympathies of the kind-hearted, and
who nio in regular pay from their em
ployers. There are many such whoso
importunities ami impudonco ought to
commend thoin to the special attention
of the city authorities. Be this as it
may. at tho time wo wero passing tho
croup with their hands lifted up a ven
erable old ingress leading a little negro
boy, came tiudging along leisurely,
looking the picture of content and
benevolence. The group attracted her
attention. Ilor eyes became slightly
enlarged. SUo viewed them carefully
till she was nearly past them, without
halting. Slowly her right hand descen
ded into her pockot, and, pulling out
something resembling a small terrapin,
or nn old fashioned salt cellar well worn,
she made a gradual detour and dropped
r. good sized coin Intoono of tho raised
hands before her. Saying something in
French which we could not catch, she
again waddled on, lior countenance
fiying almost os plainly as words o mid,
“How thankful I am for not being ono
of these poor white folks 1”
If Abolition could have stood by and
seen this waste of funds by tho old
bond-woman upon mere wliito folks,
liow shocked it would have been l How
it would have turned up the whites of
its eye* at tho horrid hardness of heart
that tho peculiar institution produces,
which could thus induce an old darkey
to spend her money upon mero white
folks, instead of giving it to them for
philanthropic stealing!—aV, 0. bulletin.

How long the lamp of conversation
holds out to burn between two persons
3n ly is curiously sot down in the follow
mg passage from Count OonfuUionor’s
account of his imprisonment;
“Fifteen years I oxisted in a dungeon
ton feet square 1 During six years 1 had
;v comiMinioit; during nine I was alone.
I never could rightly distinguish the
faco or him who shared my captivity in
the eternal twilight of our cell. Tho
first year wo talked incessantly together;
wo related our past lives, our joys for
ever gone, over and over again. Tho
next year wo communicated to each
other our thoughts and ideas on all sub
jects. The third year we had no ideas
to communicate; we wore beginning to
lose tho power of reflection. Tho fourth
at tho interval of a month or bo, wo
would open our lips to ask each other if
!t wero possible that the world wont on
as gay and hustling as when we formed
a portion of mankind. Tho fifth wo
wero silent] Tho sixth he was taken
uway—I nevor knew where, to cxecu-
t ion or liberty. But I was glad when ho
was gone—oven solitude was better than
the pale vacant face. One day (it must
have been a year or two after my com
panion left me) the dungeon door was
opened, whence proceeding I knew not,
t he following words were uttered; “By
order of his Imperial Majesty, I intimate
to you that your wife died a year ago.”
Then tho door was shut, and I heard no
more; they had but flung this great
agony upon mo, and left me alone with
A Rich scent, in Conowkss.—“!c
Washington correspondent of tho Du

count of a rich scene in the House, du-
Ujo last ballot for Speaker, which we
have not seen published before ;
“During tho progress of tho ballot
many ludicrous scenes transpired. One
in particular, I will mention, which ex
cited a great deal of mirth. As Barks
dale wits urging all tho Opposition ele
ments to unite on MoClernurd, a lady
in ono of the front seats in tho gallery
was observed to become very much ex
cited. She coughed, made signs, and
by other means attempted to attract
the attention of a member bolow. Not
succeeding, slm leaned fur over the bal
cony, and in an ntidiblo whisper ex-
claimed. ‘David! David ! chango your
vote, you booby!’ The honorable mem
ber looked up, recognized bis hotter
half, colored, hesitated, stajmnorod, and
then instantly changed his—seat. A
small, delicate fist wits shaken lit him
from tho gallery, amid the suppressed
mirth of tho spectators.”
$<&* A remarkable story is told by a
Havanna journal of the discovery in
Lower California of an iinmenso Salt
Lake, the oxistonceof which has hith
erto been unknown lu tho civilized
world. The lake is sui«l to be one hun
dred miles in length and twenty-five in
width, and besides its immenso resour

will product) at least 200,000 tons. The
mouth of the river leading to this in
land lako is said to he a littlo north of
tho 27th parallel of latitude. As to tho
country round about, the writor says

various cases having occurred of Indians
dying of hunger.
