—Many months since, James Johnson,
uGnrmaii grocer, was .detected in buy
ing stolen goods from a slave, knowing
tho same to bo stolen. This constituted
a felony, and he was committed to jail
to answer. During his incarceration, a
little dog, who refused to abandon his
master when all others had forsaken
him, visited him every day. About noon
tho faithful brute would appear at the
prison, and, waiting a chance, when the
ponderous iron door was Hung open, he
would rush in and lick his master’s
hand through the iron grating. Last
October, Johnson nbtaitufd bail and lied.
Since that timo the dog lias gono to tho
jail nearly every day m search of tho
master ho will probably never sec again.
Yesterday he obtained access to the
prison, and, failing to meet the ono ho
sought, tho poor brute retraced his steps
slowly and in u melancholy mood.—
Louisville Charier,
* young officer inquired of him tlio
• and place, and found hero was his
history. Reader, judge, if you can
of his feelings, to recognize in the dying
old inan his father, 'lying a penitent un
der his cate! And judge of the feeling
of the dying penitent, to lind tlmt the
same young stianger was his son—the
very son whom he had plunged into
tlio sea, and had no idea but that ho im
mediately perished! A description of
their mutual feelings will not l»eattcm)>-
ted. The old man soon expired in tho
arms of his son. The latter left the ser
vice, and became a pious proacher of
the gospel.
On closing this story, tho minister in
the meeting of tho Diblo Society bowed
to the chairman und said, “Sir, I am lit
tle Jack!”
Origin ok ‘A Feather in his Cai*.’—
Among the manuscripts of the British
Museum, says an English writer, there
are two copies of a curious description
of Hungary, which appears to have boon
written by a military adventurer of tho

spoaking of tho inhabitants, whom he
describes as being “of stature and com
plexion not unlike unto the Inglishe.
und in habits like until tho poor Irishof

amongest them, that nono should w«irc

to whom oiilio yt was lawful to sh«W tho

this account for tho expression. “Tlmt
