THE REASON WHY.
Do yon wish to know tho reason
Why vdur neighbor often calls
On the dashing widow Wilkins,
And attends her to the balls ?
Why his carriage is seen stopping
At some noted clothing store,
And the widow goes a shopping
Whore she never went bofore?
It* you wish it, 1 will tell yon—
Lot me whisper to you sly—
If they esteem it proper, ,
It is not your business why.
•Do you wish to know why Peter
H as forsaken friends and home,
And left bfe native country,
fn a distant land to roam ?
Why Polly seems so lonely
Since tho day that Peter left,
And or all his friends, she only
Should appear to be bereft?
If you wish it, I will tell you—
Let me whisper to you sly—
If tlioy have reasons for it,
It is not your business why.
Would you liko to know tho secrets
Of your neighbor’s house and life?
How iio lives and how he doesn’t,
And just how he treats his wife?
How ho spends his time or liosure,
Whether sorrowful or gay.
An 1 where he goes for pleasure,
To the concert or the play?
If you wish it, l will tell you—
L«*t me whisper to you sly—
II your neighbor is hut civil,
It is not your business why.
In short, instead of prying
Into other folks’ nflairs ;
If you do your own hut justice,
You will have no time for theirs,
He attentive to such matters
As concern yourself alone,
And whatever fortune flatters,
Lot your business ho your own.
< »ne word by way of finish—
Let mo whisner to you sly—
I f you wish to bo respected,
You must cease to bo a pry.

He walked through tho crowd of ladies

broke out with:

"Tlie proprietor has just stepped out
"Well ho this a retailing shop?”
The young man, hardly comprehend

“Guos* you understand your trade?”
“O, yes, wrapping up a bundle for
his lady customer, "What can wo do

"Well, ns tho cold weather is coming
on. 1 thought 1 might as well como and

“I don’t understand you strangor,”
replied the clerk, who began to think
tho fellow was in tho wrong box.
“Zactlyso; well I’ll tell you.”
"Explain what you mean, my friend,”
plied the clerk, as ho saw him pro-

coat.
"Well, as 1 snid once before, tho cold
weather’s coming on, and I thought 1

"Stranger, 1 hope you will tell mo

a number of customers waiting to ho

gotten their errands, listening to the

Texas is a great Stato. It has not on
ly a large, growing, mixed population—
every variety of climate and soil, gamo
and stock—but its very oxen have bo
conus denominational, if not sectarian
in name, character and spirit,
proof of this wo givo tho following inci
dent:
A minister travelling along tho road,
met a strangor driving his wagon, which
was pulled uy four oxen ; us tho min
ister approached, ho heal'd tho driver
say—
"Get upPrcsbytcrlanl” "Geo Camp-
Lollito!” "Haw Baptist!” "What uro
you doing, Methodist 1”
Tho minister struck with tho singu
larity of such names being given to ox
en remarked—
".Stranger, you have "strange names
for your oxen, and I wish to know
why they had such names giron to
them."
The driver replied:
“1 cull that loan one in front, Presby
terian, becauso ho is true blue and nev
er fails—lto believes in pulling through
every dillicult ultice, persevering to tho
end, and thon ho knows more than all
the rest. Tho one by his side I call
Campbollito; ho does very well when
you lot him go on his own way, until
lie sees water, and thon nil tho world
could not keep him out of it, and there
he stands ns if his journey was ended.—
This oil* ox, behind, isa real Baptist, for
he is all the tiino after water, and will
not eat with the others, hut is constant
ly looking first on one side, and then
on tho other, and at everything that
comes near him. The other which I
call Methodist, makes a great noise and
a great to-do, and you would think that
he was pulling all creation, but he don't
pull a pound."
The minister having his curiosity grat
ified with the explanation, rode on won
dering what bo should next see and hear
in Texas. This is no dream, but u fact
as we have heard; nor arc we influenced
by dyspeptic feelh.gs, telling our rea
ders the ecclesiastical relation of Texas
oxen .—True Witness.

Tragic Death*
A letter from Bruges, in the Inde
pendence says:
At a hall recently given by tho Gov
ernor of that Provence, one of the
handsomest wotuon present was Madamo
, of Niouport. In tho course of
the evening this lady conversed for a
few moments with a physician of her
acquaintance, who noticed a small black
sjiot in tho lady’s cheek. Ho told her
of it, but tho lady replied that it was
only a pimple ami would soon disappear.
The doctor thought otherwise, and ad
vised her to apply poultices immediate
ly. She, however, declined to follow
Ids advice. In about an*hour after they
met again, and tho doctor saw that tho
snot was spreading, but uelthor ho nor
tho lady’s husband could induce her to
listen to such a proposal. Before she
left tho ball tho cheek had become pain
ful and swollen, and on reaching home
poultices wero applied, but too late, for
tho lady diod on tho following day.—
The disease which thus cut short her
days was a carbuncle of tho most ma
