it|e pintle Courier. M. DWINELL, Editor. QEO. T. STOVALL, Associate Editor. ROME, GA. TUESDAY MORNING, April 17. “Mind Your own Business.” Under the above plain, and not very polite, demand, the Dalton Timer indig-! nantly spurns all the words of consola tion and sympathy which the Opposition press of Georgia have been offering the , Cobb Democrats in their truly pitiable condition. The fountain of our sym pathy is too deep to be dried up by such an ungenerous return. We do pity them, and whether they desire it or not, we will continue to pity them. The limes winds up as follows s The fact is, the Opposition are rather meddlesome, and wo would, in ns kind manner as possible, advise them to at tend to their own business, and leuve the Democratic party of the State to manage its own affairs—settlo its owp differences—which it can certainly do without tliuir assistance. Our friend certainly must have for gotten the assistance we rendered last fall in settling a little difference m the Democratic fninily of the fifth District, when it seemed incapable of “managing its own affairs.” You can’t well got along without us to harmonize you now and then, and although you may con sider it’“rathcr meddlesome,” wo will offer our services “for the good of tho country.” Floyd Cavalry-Suggestion to the Ln« dies. Tho “Floyd Cavalry,” under com mand of Capt. W. S. Cothran appeared on parade on last Saturday with tolora. bly full ranks. Upon their parade ground they went through thoir sword exercise, and for tho first time used their pistols on horseback. As was expected there was considerable commotion in ranks, their horses not having been nc- customed to tho report of fire-arms. But upon tho wholo they behaved well. We have recently noticed in some of our exchanges interesting accounts of presentations of flags by the ladies to newly organized volunteer companies. Our Cavalry Corps has boon in existence wo believe a little more than a year and still they are without n flag. Are the ladies of Home less patriotic than oth- ors? We nover will believe they We are confident that a word to them is sufficient, and therefore wo givo tho hint. The .Marine Dank Robber Caught. The Columbus l\mes gives tho par ticulars of the detection, arrest ami im prisonment of Mi. K. B. Holmes, Book Keeper in the Marine Bank Agency, Columbus, Gu., charged with the rob bery recently committed in that city.— A negro found $30,000 under a small bridge. Holmes was suspected, and without confessing his guilt directed tho Bank ofllcers where the balance of the money could he found. He was bound over in thf sum of $2,500. Another Diamond Wedding. Tho Jenkins of tho New York Herald, gives an account of a marriage in up- pertendon, which took place in New York on Thursday last s The wedding took place at the resi dence of the bride’s father, Mr. Van- derpoel, in Madison avenue. Mr. Van- dorpool is a wealthy and retired mer chant of this city, and is a brothor of Judge Vandernoel. Thoy nro ono of the oldest families of this city. The bridegroom in Mr. John Vnnder- poel, a lawyer of this city, and is u member of tho family, although vary distantly connected. The bride is tho oldest duughter of Mr. Jacob Vatuler- pocl. Thoy wero married in the house by the ltov. Dr. Lathvop, of the Second Avenue Baptist Church. Tho brother of thebridesgioom acted ns groomsman The Whitworth Gnn. The English papers contain quite lengthy reports of the recent trials of the Whi ' ~ Mr. Stephens' Letter. A loiter from lion. A. II. Stephens has recently appeared in the Augusta 1 'o \stitutionalist, dated March Oth and idressod to ono of the delegates to the March Convention, positivelyrefusing t j allow his naino to be connected with the Presidency in any way, and author ising tho gentleman to whom it was written, to “read it to the convention if need be.” This letter but confirms what has all ulong been asserted by the opposition, and by Mr. Cobb’s friends, and flatly denied by his enemies—to wit; tlintthe March Convention was called for no oth er purpose than to repudiate* him.— The March Democrats pretended that Mr. Stephens’ claims had been ignored by the December Convention, and ono del- ogftto to tho March Convention in sup port of this position said, that next to Stephen A. Douglas,Mr. Stephens stood the best chance in tho Charleston Con vention, bocause it was believed that when the former gentleman was con vinced that ho could not receive tho nomination, ho would cast his influ ence for Mr. Stephens. Now if this was the true and only reason of their refusal tore-adopt tho resolutions of the eceinber Convention, why was not Mr. Stephen’s letter read to the convention ? Was there not a necessity for it? Was not tho convention at tho point of an open rupture because tho March Demo crats persisted in urging Mr. Stephens’ claims to tho prejudice of Mr. Cobb’s ? Would not tho rnoro reading of this let ter have stilled tho rows and tho storm in a moment? Why then was it not read? Tliero is but one answer. All Mr. Ste phens’ friends knew of tho existence and contents of that letter, and if they had transpired they would liavo been deprived of their pretext, and boon ut terly without excuse for further opposi tion to the action of tho Decombor Con vention. But Mr. Cobb must bo over thrown. And why? For whom? For Stophen A. Douglas. It cannot bo de nied. Tho dovelopemonts now coming to light are but the substance of the 1 shadows they had cost before. Almost simultaneously with the publication of Mr. Stephens’ letter in the Constitution alist appoared a lengthy communication from James Gardener Esq., proprietor of that paper. Uo had just returned from Washington City and tolls tho Southern peoplo that Stephen A. Doug las is the man for tho emergency ; the only ono who can boat tho Black Ho* publican candidate, and the proper can didate to be nominated at Charles- Thc Garrick Club, This is the name of a new Thespian Company recently organized in this place. It is composed of young men of unexceptionable character and who doubtless have talent to ensure success. A decidedly moral tone will characterise all their performances and tho company will be managed in such a way as to meet with the approbation of tho en tire community. Their objocts will bo their own improvement, a source of amusement for themselves and of tertainment for tho citizens of the c< ty. On last Saturday night tho compa' ny wos organized by the election of the following officers: J. T. Duane, President. M. A. Hoss, Vico President. II. K. Shackelford Soc’ty. N. P. Jackson. Treasurer. Win. Howe, Stage Manager. T. M. Banin, Prompter. and tho fair sislor of the bride assumed tho responsible position of bridesmaid. Tho bride was most richly dressed in white satin and luoo, and wore n pearl necklaeo said to bo worth $1,800, She is young, handsome, prepossessing in , her personal appeal once, and the happy gentleman who was so fortunate ns to obtain her band was envied bis good fortune by alt present. After tho cere mony the Hev. Dr. made a most elo- quout prayer, in which ho invoked the blessing of God upon the young couple, and hoped that lie would givo them f ;raco to enter upon the serious duties of ifo with a proper spirit. Alter the usual salutations from rela tives and friends, the company retired to tho refreshment saloon, which was hcnutifuilv decorated with real flowers, which were in such profusion that they hung in festoons from the chande liers. In u room oil* the saloon wore' the various presents which had been presented to the young couple. They comprise splendid silver an l china tea sets, any quantity of silver spoons and forks, bracelets, napkin rings, watches, and among them all was a splendid Bible, on which was a plate with their crest upon it. Tho presents were chiefly from the relatives, and were too numerous to classify. There were ono thousand invitations givou out, and the scene outside tho house was a very spirited ono. Madison avenue and tho side streets for some distance were filled with carriages, it was with difficulty that the visi canto ami went. Tho bride and bride groom intend making an extensiv Southern tour, und end with making a trip to Havana. They left for Philadel phia yesterday afternoon, and will be absent some time. Everything passed off us “merry os a marriage bell.” The day was line, the company in the best of spirits, and everything omened u happy life to tbohe who bud been joined together in the bonds of matrimony. liUworth Gun, said to bo superior in many ways to that of Sir Wm. With a three pounder, and an elevation ol 35 degrees, loaded with eight ounces of powder, tho first shot touched the ground at 9,088 yards dis tance-more than five and a half miles —and only 34 yards to the right of the true line. The second lodged in tho sand at 9,045 yards, und 31 yards to the right of the mark. With an elevation of only 33 degrees, a range of 9,547 yards wos obtained, tho shot falling on ly 57 yards to the right of the mark.— The greatest range ever reached by any Armstrong gun, was 9,130 yards ; and this with a thirty-two pounder, tired with a G lb. charge, at an elevation of 35 degrees. A mysterious and suspicious affair has been the exciting topic of conversation in Edgefield District, for a week or two past. A short time since, t he body of a man, in an advanced stage of decompo sition, was found in a dense nine thicket near tho Edgefield road, about seven miles from Hamburg. There was but little, in fact, except the skele ton, remaining--only a dried couting of skin being apparent. Portions of the Ixjdy—tho bones, &c.—were scattered all about the ulace. There was nothing discovered about tho remain* to give the least clue to their identity. One peculiarity was noticeable—that all the teeth in the lower jaw were dotiblo cept three front ones.
