»V RICHARD C. TREXCn.
Who wos.it that so lately said,
All pulses in thy hoart were dead—
Old Earth, that now in festal robes
Appoarest, as a bride now wed ?
Oh, wra'pned so late in winding sheet,
Thy winding sheet, oh? where is fled?
1*0! *t!s on emerald carpet non,
Where tho young monarch, Spririg may
tread.
The warm wind broke his frosty spear.
And loosed tho homlot from his hoad !
And ho weak showers of arrowy sleet
For his strongholds has vainly sped.
All that was sleeping is awako,
And all is living that was dead.
Who listens now can hear tho streams
Leap tinkling down their pebbly bed—
Or see them, from their fetters free,
Like silver snakes the meadows thread.
The joy, the life, tho hopes of earth,
They slept awhile, they wore not dead :
o t bon who say'st thy sure hoart ne’er
With verdure can again ho spread—
f) th«»u who mournost them that sleep,
b lying in an earthy bed—

"Well, John, we would all liko to

blame us for laughing.”
"1 reckon I'll have to tell it, then, so

"All of you whohave ever been down
in that part of tho county where

the oi l widow Iliggins," She is a very
fine old lady, and was very kind to us
boys whenever wo come. Tho old lady
would send a uigjfor down every day or
two, cither to invito us to coiue up and
take dinner with hor, or to bring "
down a couple of nice chickens or
quarter of irosh slumt. Wo repaid these
note of kinduessof the old lady's in to*

alleviate tho pains of “ tootli-ocho”
which tho old lady was suro to come on
her if she did not always keep a little
tobacco in hor mouth, and tho latter in
cases of “sickness,” which I think held
on ns tang ua the whisky lasted. Wo
also invariably left her threo or four
nice venison liams, of which she was al
ways very proud. Well, tho time be
fore tho lust wo wore down there, game
was very scarce, and wo lived pretty
much oh’ from tho contents of tho old

two weeks, and were getting ready to
start homo; had no venison, no whisky,
no tobacco, nor no nothing to give the
old lady. Now, do any of you recollect
that large, lazy old houncl I used to
have? If you do, you will know that
he always managed to got all the.’O was

circumstance for him that time.) Well
one of tho Ikjvs proposed to kill him

The old lady praised the hams very

ADecdoto of titan. Jackson.
Tho following aneedote is related by
Partonin his life of Jackson recently
published, foicibly illustrating a promi
nent trait in tho character of tho “Lion
of tho Hermitage.”
“A little scone that occurred at tho
Hermitage table, as dpscribod by a lady
who witnessed it may servo to illustrate
tho curious blending of tho Preshyto-
rinn with the soldier ami man of flio
world sometimes exhibited in Gen.
Jackson’s behavior. After his wife had
oiqed tho church, tho General, In de
ference'to her wishes was accustomed
to ask a blessing before meals. The
company had sat down at the table ono
day, when tho Goncral was tellinga war
like story with great animation, mtorlar-
ding his discourse, as was then his cus
tom, with a profusion of expletives most
heterodox and profane. In tho full
tide brills narration tho lady of the
house interrupted her lord, “Mr. Jnck-
, will youaska blessing?” Mr. Jack-
stopped short in tho midst of his
most soldier-like sentences, performed
the duty required of him, ami instantly
resumed his imrrativo in tho same tone
and language as before. If it were ad
missible to give here the oxao< words of
the interrupted sentence, with the grace
in the midst thereof, this would be a cap
ital story. Tho reader can imagine it,
however.
The Vnmpyrc.
Captain .Stcudiuan, in his “Narrative
of a rive Years’ Expedition against tho
Revolted Negroes of Surinuin,” relates
tiiat, on waking about lour o’clock one
morning in his hutmuocK, he was ex
tremely alarmed ut weltering in con
gealed blood. “The mystery was,” con
tinued Cuptuiti S., "that 1 hud been hit-
ten by the Yampyro, or Mpcotio of
Guiana, which is also called the Hying
dog of'Nmv .S]tain, and by the Spaniards
ovuiude. This is iio other than a
bat of moii.'.troua size that sucks the
blood from men and entile while they
are lust asleep, even sometimes till they
die; and as the munnor in which they
proceed is truly wonderful, 1 shall en
deavor to give a distinct account of it.
Knowing by instinct, that the person
they intend to attack, is in a sound
slumber, ttiey generally uliglit near the
the icct where, while creature con
tinues fanning with his enormous wings,
ivniuh keeps one cool, ho bites a peice
out of the tip of the great toe, so very
small indued tout the head ot u pin
could scarcely be received into the
wound, which U consequently not y
till; yet through this orifice lie continues
to stick the blood until ho is compelled
to disgorge. Jlu then begins again, and
thus continues sucking and disgorging
until he is scarcely ably tolly; and llie
sutlbrer has often boon known to sleep
from time to eternity. Cattle they
generally bite in the car, but always in
places where tlio blood Hows spontane
ously. Having applied tobacco-ashes as
the best remedy, mid washed tho gore
from myself and hammock, I observed
several .small heaps of congealed blood
all around the place where 1 had lain on
tho ground; on examining which, the
surgeon judged that I had lost ut least
twelve or fourteen ounces during tho
night.

my •pinion of the merits of your Bafin' cf
Savannah. After using it for some two year*,
I am prepared to speak from experience, and
do not hesitate to pronounce it tbe belt lire-

I esteem it a idoasBiit and convenient articls
for dressing tbe hair, possessing most of tbs
virtues claimed for the popular cosmetics of
