Had quonohed all the stars with their light? • You I'limo buck with chocks glowing crimson, And eyelashes glittering with tears, A ml a smilo, which, half sad, half tri umphant, .Still over your sweet mouth appears. Did Iio talk of th© beauty of summor? Or praiso the wild rose’s perfumo ? Or speak of our arbors so rustic, Whcro woodbine and jessamine bloom ? •JIo told vou a story ?” Oh l Did ho l Well, Katy dear, tell It to me. ‘ 1 You’ vo almost forgot it ? Already 1 llow very much nattered he’d be? Still nearer Maonulay’s grave there is the small pavoment-stono with the in scription "O xr.ro Den Jonson,” which Aubroy tells us was douo at the chargo of Jack Young, who, walking thoro when the grave was covering, gavo tho fellow eighteen pence to cUt it. At the nt relaying of the pavement of the ov tho original stono was removed and destroyed. A few feet distant is tho monument of Cowley, raised bv Goorgo, Duke of Buckingham. A monument raised by Sheffield, Dukoof Buckingham, marks tho grave of Dry- den, "Glorious John,” who was followed to his resting place by mourners in panltuont of trumpets ar.d hautboys. The only titled poet that sloops n this part of tho Abbey is tho Earl of ltosoommon, tho famous master of tho horso to tho Duchess of York at tho Restoration. Another companion of Macaulay is Ntcholns Howe. There aro also Matthow Pryor and John Gay, nnd ho whoso tomb boro the inscription, in Imitation of that of Jonson, "Oraro Sir William Davenantj” nnd Samuel John- , son, David Garrick, and Richard Brins- say that you "think I may guess iti” I w Sheridan, nnd Camden, the father of English history; May, the historian of the tong Parliament; Gifford, the editor of the Tory Quarterly Review ; Dr. Parr, and numerous others. At tho opposito or north: end of tho transept, there towers above other memorable Tis an old tnlo, yet always a sweet on© j I’m certain you found it so. ’Twos new in tho first days of Adam, When, wandering through Edens fair towers, In Eve’s llttlooar it was whispered While sho blushing played with the ilowors. Why, wliat aro you crying about? ■Your grandfathor told your grandmoth er— Tho very snmo story no doubt. just three little words toll this story— Wlmt thousands of hoarU they have thrilled 1 How many with joy they have gladden ed! How many with sorrow huvo fillod 1 Those throe littlo words are: "I w>va vou1”. You sco ’Us the very samo tale That you hoard thero last night by tho woodbines Bcnoath tho moon’s silvery veil. Don’t say I know nothing about it— You know very woll.it Is true; But Katy, my dear, did you toll him Tho saino story that ho told you? nr W. L. SHOEMAKER. Tho spring now weaves hor garland, Hor garland green and bright; And swallows, from some far land, Yo’vo hithor winged your flight. Through tho soft sunny azure Ye soar and sing with gloo; And Lovo to you brings ploasuro Ho brings nomoro to me- Wherever you have wonded, Your days hnvo still boon blest, Tor Lovo your way attended, And mado with you his nest. I, too, was Into light-hoar ted, And full of joy ns yo; But Lovo has since departed, And comes no moro to me. When last yo hovered round mo, Or skimmed tho grassy plain, His silken fetter bound mo, Now rudely rant in twain. I hoar once moro, yo swnllows, Your songs shrill o’er tho loa; And Lovo your flight still follows, That ooiucs no moro to mo. Tlio homes of former summers, Tho plaoos yo have known,. Yosook, O glad now comers, Aiid make nguinyour own.. Tho nosts so long forsaken, By to vo will haunted bo; But, having leavo once taken, Ho comes no moro to me*. For tho fair south's dominions, Whero shines a warmer sun; Again ye’il spread your pinions, When summer horo is done. This May the 7th, 1800. nmyll. JA&. WHEELER, Adm’r. JIucuuluy’H Companions Ju the Tomb. Baron Macaulay, says tho London Post, now lies close at the foot of West- macott’s statuo of Addison, whom ho once so happily described ns the unsul lied statesman, tlio accomplished scholar, tho master of puro English cloquonce, tho consummate painter of life und manners, and tho "great satirist who alono knew how to uso ridicule without abusing it; who> without in flicting a wound, eftectod a great social reform; nnd who reconciled wit with virtue after n long and disastrous sepa ration, during which wit had been led astray by profligacy aud virtue by fan aticism.” The remains of Addison, however, nro at some distance from tho H»ot on which the monument stands— they aro in. tho olianel of Henry VJLI., and it was not until throe generations has laughed and wopt over his pages that any tablet was raised to his memo ry in tho Abbey. Macaulay said of tho statuo which now keeps watch over tho nowly-olosea grave: "It represents Addison ns wo can conceive him, clud iu bis dressing gown and freed from bis wig, stopping from tho parlor nt Cholsea into Ins trim littlo gnruon, with tho account of tlio Ever lasting Club, or the Loves of Hilpa and Slialum, just finished for the next day Spectator, in his hand.” Thickly strown near tho grave of Mqcuulny are the relics of tho men whose names are still held in reverenee, and whose works adorn the literature of our country. As a noot, not less than it brilliant essayist, Macaulay lias earned a place among the great mon of the past nnd present, und in death the authors of the Lays of Ancient Horae, and the ballad on tlio Spanish Armada, will lace Thomas Campbell, who won a poet's lame by the I’lensures of Hope. A few feet from tho grave of the en nobled poet of tlie nineteenth century, stands the lino old piece of Gothic sculpture, which marks the resting place .qf Chaucer—father of English poetry.’ • lust opposito to tlio tomb of Chaucer, "tho day starro” of English poetry, is tho monuu\ent of "Fairie Spenser,” tho sunrise of our poetry, who died, us Ben Jonson tellj, "for lack of bread, refusing tlio twenty pieces sent him by my Lord of Essex, as lie was sorry he had no time to spend them.” Fairly obliterated by tlio hand of time, the tomb of Sponsor bears the inscription, "Hero lies the tody of Ldmund Spon ger, the prince of poets in his time, whoso divine spirit needs no other wit ness than tho works which ho lias left behind him.” Beaumont, tho dramat ist, sleeps here, but no memorial or inscription marks his resting-place; it is, however, immediately behind Chau- corn's tomb.
