An Exploit of n Philadelphia Detec
tive.
Those who believe that the pursuit of
sharp rogues is a simple operation that
any booby can perform, should road the
following record in outline of tho doings
of a Philadelphia deteotivo in ohaso of
n knave, and tlioy will probably arrivo
■ at n different opinion; Nome timo since
nn individual, who .profossod to bo a
western .merchant, and whom wo will
call Mr. McK., cnino to tills city, and by
dint*o| false pretenoos ho succeeded in
getting into certain 'mercantile .estab
lishments to the tune of many thou
sands of dollars.- It leaked out that
’tho shmo genius had played ft similar
game in other cities, and ft requisition
upon tho Governor of Kentucky was
accordingly made bv Governor Parker
and placed in tho hands of deteotivo
Franklin, Mr. Franklin first repaired
to Louisa, an out of the way town in
Kentucky, which had boon the abiding
place of Mr. MoK. Mr. F. was perfect
ly well aware that any open inquiries as
!o the whereabouts of Mr. MoK. would
nly defeat their object, so lie dotermin-

md repairing to tho room of the inno-
.•out Franklin, into one night,, ft bar
gain was struck, a man of tho lnnd of
.jjromiso was drawn by tho Kentucky
Xuadder, and the enraptured Gallup was
^o delighted ftt the prospect of a cash
sale, that he forgot his usua'j prudenoo
and allowed the interesting fact to be
•pumped” from him that his friend and
client, Mr. MoK., was then sojourning
ut Cincinnati.. To that city Mr. F. sped
without loss.of timo, and assuming to
bo a donisen of Louisiana, anxious to
soo Mr. McK. in a friendly way, lie suc
ceeded in tracing him to a lager beer
saloon, where ho was about imbibing.
Mr. Franklin's requisition.was upon the
Governor of Kentucky, and Cincinnati
was upon the wrong side of tho river to
rondor It available. A speedy Arrange
ment wns therefore made to secure the
voluntary going of tho fugitive aoross
tho Ohio. A rough individual wont in
to tho lager beer saloon and rudely jos
tled Mr. McK. at the bar; Mr. McK. re
sented.the insult, the rowdy “went In,”
a scuffle ensued, during which tlio row
dy got possession of tne coat of Mr.
McK. and made off with it. A cry of
. “stop thief!” was raised, an officer who
. was near by, by previous arrangement,
arrested .rowdy, and discovered that he
was an old. thief who was much wanted
ut Covington,* Rowdy not oljjeoting to
tho summary process, was taken across
tho river,'followed by the indignant
MoK., who wns itching for vongeanco

Coat wns restored to him and ho was al
so slightly astonished to find himself
sold into the hands of tho Philadelphia
officer who produced liis requisition,
and soon after started east with his
prisoner, while tho robber of tho coat
went homo to tho city of pork. The
Cincinnati friends of Mr. MoK. thought
it was pretty sharp practice; but Mr.
Franklin suggested that sharp diseases
require sharp remedies, and cancerous
rogues demand something moro potent
than rosewntery measures. Yesterday
the detective.received a letter from Mr.

Tho demand far it having increased so far bo

J. M. Haywood, Agent—Dear Sir: I cheer

Savannah. Aflor using it forsomo two years,
I am prepared to speak from experience, nnd
do not hesitate to pronoum-o it tho best pre

1 esteem it a pleasant nnd convenient article
for dressing the hair, possessing most of the
virtues cluimcd for the popular cosmetics of

h y ties. I feel confident that it only ueeds to.bo
known to tho public to become universally
popular.

Tho object of this is to state that I hnvo, for
somo months, used Mr. Haywood’s llnir Ton
ic—known as the Balm of Sovanquh—and
havo found It Incomparably superior to any
other artlclo of the kind. Its uso twicoa
week is quite sufficient, not only to disengngo
tho dandrufi', Ac., from the hair, Imt to pro-
vent.Us formation in tiny applicable quantity.
It maintains tho Lair too, in that moist and
pleasant condition, which so many other
specific, pretend lo do, but almost always
fall—in so far as my experience goes.
