. BY MARY IIOWITT. ■Tis summer—joyous summer time t In noisy towns no more abide j The earth Is full of radiant things, Of glonming flowers and glancing wings Beauty aud Joy on ovary side. ’Tis morntho'glorloua sun Is up, The domo-liko heaven is bright and bine; The lark, yet higher and higher ascend ing, Pours out his song that knows no ond- ing; The. unfolding flowors aro brimmed with dew. When noon is in tho Hunting sky Sock we some shadowy, silent wood; Realm® upon a mossy knoll, Cast care aside, and yield tho soul To that luxurious quietude. Above, waves wide tho linden tree. With humming bees tho air is thrilled And through tho sleeping hush is heard The sudden voice of tho woodland bird Like sound with which a dream is fill’d. Oli pleasant land of idlonoss; Jolity bides not ’noath tho trees, But thought, that roams from folly free, Through tho pure world of poetry, Tuts on her strength in scones like these. And sweet It is by lonely moron To sit with heart and soul awake, Whoro wator-lilics lie afloat, Each anchor'd like a fairy boat Amid some fabled olfin lake. Tosco the birds flit to and fro Along the dark-green roody edgo; Or fish leap up. to catch the fly; Or list the viewless wind pass by, Leaving Us voico amid tho sedge. The groon and broesy hills—away! My honrfc is light, my foot is free, And resting on the topmost peak, Tho freshening galo shall fan my cheek, Tho hills wore ever dear to mo l I stand upon tho mountain’s brow, A monarch in this region wide •, I ami the gray-faced mountain shoop Tho solitary station keep. As living thing were nono beside. ’Tis summer evo, a gentlo hour; Tho west is rich in sombre sheen; And 'mid the garden's leafy trees, 8prings up a cool refreshing breeze, And tho pale stars aro faintly seen. Tho white owl with his downy wings And lioodod head goes slowly by: The hawkmoth sits upon tho flowers; And through tho silent evening hours Tho little brooks mako melody.J And walking 'mid tho folded blooms At summer midnight shalt thou fool A sflfton’d heart, a will subdued A holy sense of gratitude, An influenoe from the source of good, Thy bitterest grief to heal. What Bell and Everett Buy. It is contended that the South is se cured in {he full benofit of the doctrine hold by some of the most distinguished champions of its l ights, who maintain that tho Constitution mtoi’Rio vigors that tho flag of the Union protocts tho citizen in tlie oi\joyniont of his rights of property of overy description recog nised as such, in any of the States, of every sea and in overy-Territory of the Union. The soundness of tho gonoral doctrine held on this point, I think can not wolf bo questioned or disproved ; and if tho question related to a territo ry situated as Oregon wns, when the United States enmo into possession of it, property in Slaves would bo ontiled to the protection of theLnwsand Consti tution of tho United States.—John Bell. Neither am I ono of tlioso citizens ot tho North to whom another lionornblo member lately referred, in u publica tion to which his name was subscribed, who would think it immoral or irreli gious, to join in putting down a servile insurrection at tho South. I am no soldier, sir, my habits and education ore unmilitary; but//arc is no cause in which I would sooner buckle a knapsack to mt/ bark, and put a musket on my shoulder, than that.—Edward Everett, 1 am in favor of the principle of non intervention. Such non-intervention us would have given to tho South Cuba us a slave State, should it ever be annex ed to the United States; such non-in tervention as that, if there had been no compact with regard to the admission of slave States to.be varvod odt of Tex as* would have socured to us those slave States, independent of the com- pact by which tho United States are bound to them.—John Bell. I know the condition of the working classes in othor countries; lam inti mately acquainted with it in Homo coun tries; and I have no hesitation in say ing, that I believe the sluves in this country are bettor clothed and fed and less hardly worked than the peasantry of some of tho most prosperous States of the Continent of Europe,—Edward Everett. But, sir humanity to tho slave, not less than justice to the master, recom mends the policy of diffusion and exten sion into any new territory adapted to its condition, and tho reasons aro too obvious to be misunderstood by the dul lest intellect.—John Bell. I cannot admit that roligion has but ono voice to the slaves, ana that voice is, “Rise against your masters." No, sir; the New Testament says “Slaves obey your masters."—Edward Everett. HOPE AND MEMORY. The following beautiful moreeaic from tin pen of Mrs. Sigournoy.has been our scrap book for years, and wo publish it with tho hope that tho reader will ad mire it as much ns wo do: A little babe lay in its cradle, and Hope came and kissed it. When the nurse gave it a cake, Hope promised an other to-morrow ; and when its young AUtor.brbught a flower, over which it clapped its hands and crowed, Hope told of brighter ones which It should gather for itself. The babe grow to n child, and anoth er friend came and kissed it. Her name was memory. She said, “Look ‘behind thee, and tell me what thou seesl."— The child answered, “1 see a little book. 1 And Memory said, “I will teach thee how to get honoyTrom'Uui book, that shall bo sweet to thee when thou art old." Tho child bqeatne a youth,. Onco wlien ho went to bed, Hope and Momory stood by tlie pillow. Hope sang o melodious song, arid Bald, “Follow mo, and every- morning thou shall wako with it smile os swoct ns tho morry lay I sang tlieo.” But Memory said, “Hopo, is theronny need that wo should contend? Ho shall bo mine as well us thine. And wo will bo to him as sisters nil his life long. So ho kissed Ifopo and Memory, and ah beloved of them both. Whilo he slopt peacefully, they sat silent by his side weaving rainbow tissuo into dreams. When ho woko, they came with tho lark, to bid him good morning, and ho gave a hand to eacn. Ho became a man. Everyday Hope guided him for his labor, and every night lie supped with Memory at the ta ble of Knowledge. But nt length Ago found him, nud turned his temples gray. To his eye, tho world soemed altered. Memory sat by his elbow-chair, like an old and tried friend. He lookod at her seriously and said, “Hast thou not lost something tliut l entrusted to tlicc?" And she answered, “I fear so, for tho lock of my casket is worn. .Sometimes I am weary and then Titno purloins my key. But the gems thou didst give mo when life was new—lean account for all—soe how bright tlioy aro." While they thus sadly conversed, Hopo put forth a wing that uho had worn, folded under her garment, and tried its strength in a heavenward flight. The old man loy down to die, and when his soul went forth from the body tho angels took It. And Momory walk ed with it through tho open gate of Heaven. But Hopo lay down at its threshold, and gontly expired, iw a roso giveth out its lost odors. Her parting sigh was like tho music of a seraph's harp. She breathed it in to tho bosom of a glorious form, and said: “Immortal Happiness 1 I bring tlieo a soul that I liavo led through tho world It is now thine. Jesus hath rodocmed it. Fighting to Stay in the Union.— Whore are the disunionists asks tlie New York Herald? 1 Wo hear nothing at all of disunion except from tlie Douglas party, who aro crying down tho Brockinridgo pat ty as disunionists. Gov. Wise is out for Brockinridgo; but tlie Governor last fall, upon tho John Brown matter, said he would flight, not to go out, but to stay in tho Union. II. V. Johnson, of Georgia, was a rampart disunionist in 1855, but ho is now uj» for Vico Presi dent on tho Douglas ticket; and so, we presume, ho has come round all right Where are tlio disunionists?
