viz: tlio resolves of tho Massachusetts
Legislature, Mr. Borden’s lottor, and
Mr. Everett’s reply, date from tlio year
183U. They were brought before Sen
ate of the united States in 1841 at tho
time of his nomination as minister to
England, and made tho ground of a
motion for its rejection. Henry Clay
opposed that motion with great
warmth, and said, “that if, through the
influence of tho. South, the appoint
ment of a man of Mr. Everett’s Known
conservative opinions was rqjeoted,
tlio Union was already dissolved” At
tho clpso of a fervid speech by llufus
Choate, in support of Mr. Everett’s up-
jjointment, thelatoHon. IV. 05. Preston
exclaimed,am afraid I have commit
ted myself to vote against him, but. by
Heaven, he shall not bo rejected!” Mr.
, ^Preston was afterwards heard to say
that “he regrottod the vote liioro than
any ever given by him.’’ Mi*. Everett’s
nomination as the first Minister to
China, two’ years latter, was, I believe,
unanimously confirmed, in the same
Sonato, of which Mr. Vico President
King and Mr. Calhoun wovo members.
His nomination as Secretary of Stato
on tho death of Mr. "Webster, wus unani
mously confirmed in 1852. In the fol
lowing year ho was elected, by tlio con
servative members of the Legislature of
Massachusetts, to the Senate of tho
United States.
