A sad honrt in a sobbing breast, Whoso birds have fled that sang for mo, Is tho swoot golden robin’s neat, That swings in silonco on tho treo. Thero stands thesoro and withered brlor, Counting tho rod beads on its stem, For snow will quench its loaves of tiro, And death will blanch cheeks red like them. No bud to bloom—no beak to sing— No flowor to greet tho oagor oye— No oriolo with sunny wine— No song between us and the sky. Vory Illno! Oh 1 why did I not toll her sooner That ray heart and my lifo wero her own? Why, why did I linger so idly, Till Love’s ohoosen season had flown? Now thoy say she’s to marry anothor— And oh! it tho tidings bo truo, Though I won’t think of poison or pow der, I shall certainly look vory bluo. The Fashions. The Philadelphia Bulletin i« highly pleased with tho present loahlon for la dies'dresses. lVo must not (It «y») abuse Fashion Indiscriminately. When she takes counsol of taste wo should commend. Thore are so many ugly and inconvenient freaks of tho tickle K * less, and wo are so much in tlio t of laughing at her and hoi* votn* ries —by whom we mean of course every woman in America—that wo really ought to spare an article, now and then to praiso her when sho gratifies tho tosto of tho whole country. First, then, tho hat and featlior is de cidedly pretty. For young girls—not married women and mlddlo-agcd ladles —it is tho prettiest and tnost tasteful thing tvo have over semi on their pioity beads. For all girls with passably regu lar features and tolerable complexions it is the very tiling. It ought not, howev er, to bo worn too much oiF tlio fane, which gives tho wearer a bold look.— Tlio idea la to droop tho haland feather a littlo, so as not to loso sight of that modesty without which a woman, young or old, is leather and prunella. Thu nets for the hair, with the liltlo tassols at tlio Bide, are very graceful a ml becoming for llio same class of girls. To those just coming out, and indeed to all wlio haveu youthful look, they odd a charm of lightness and airiness such ns wo linvo soldom scon given by any bead dress. Ornco, with the lint and fonther and net, may ho the rulo and not the exception. The mantillas are very becoming, and the subdued tone of tho colors, the ab sence of all glare and Haunting, tho (Af ferent shades of gray, tho coolness and grace of tlio whole stylo, oliablo in to congratulate tho ladies. They Imvo done tlio important thing this summer—lliey have made a Idt. Wo And in “All tho year Hound” tlio following views in regard to ladies’dross which wo would recommend to tlio at tention of our readers: As you look from your windows in Paris, observe the first fifty women who pass: forty have noses depressed in tho middle, a small quantity of dark hair, and a swarthy complexion; but, then, what a toilet! Not only suitable for tlio season, but tlio age and complexion of the tvoaror. IIow neat tho feet and hands 1 How well tho clothes aro put on, and more than all, how well tlioy suit oaoh other! . Before English women can dress per fectly, thoy must have the taste of the French, especially in color. Ono rea son why we sco colors ill-arranged in England is, that tho different artioles aro purchased each for ita own imagin ed virtues, and without any thought of what is to be worn with it. Women, while shopping, buy what pleases the eye on tne counter, forgetting what they have got at homo. That parasol is pretty, but it will kill, by its color, one. dress in the buyer’s wardrobe, and bo unsuitable lor the others. To bo mag nificently dressed costs money; but to be dressed with taste, is not expensive. It requires good tasto, knowledgo, and refinement. Nover buy an artlclo un less it is suitable to your ago, habits, stylo, and to tlio rest of your ward robe. Nothing is more vulgar than to wear costly dresses with a common delaine, or cneap laces with oxpcns\vo brocades. What colors, may be asked, go best together. Green with violet; cold with dark crimson or lilac; pale blue with scarlot; pink with black or white; and Ay With Tun Holy Land.—Wo take tho fol lowing from Gnlignanl’s Mestevyer, of Paris. Whether tnoro Is any truth in thestatement or not, it is of inturcstnml significance: Tint Sultan and the Jews.—What is said bv our London correspondent with reference to tho Jews should attract more than ordinary attention.— That tho Sultan of Turkey should on- courage tho emigration of this people to Palestine; that ho should oiler to soil them as much laud us they choose to buy; and that ho should even hint at such a thing ns a willingness to dis pose of tho Mosquo of Omar for Jewish gold, is cortalnly a marvel. Tho history of tho few years 1ms abundantly shown that Mohammedan ism has not only lost much as to the extent of its sway, but also ns to its moral power ovor its professed Votaries. Tim fuller opening of ooinmerco with tho West has liberalized bigotry. It has first compelled n freer intercourse with Christians, and thon forced upon the followers of tho Prophot a respect for other religions besides their own.— With this 1ms camo, perhaps, a less ox- clusivo rolinneo upon their own faith as tho essence of nil wisdom nml truth, and so tho title “Infidel dogs,” has coino to bo morohistorical than oxpres- sivc of present sentiment, at least among tho moro enlightened class. In this class wo may undoubtedly plnco tl;o present Sultan, who Is evidently great ly humbled by the waning of tho Cres cent, and who has tho luudnblo ambi tion to bo on good terms with his su periors. llo tuny, too, have Imbibed from his lato allies a littlo of the spirit of speculation, and bcconio' more than willing to ropair his fallen fortunes by soiling out a part of his domain even to tho .lews. Wo aro not yet, however, ready to believo that ho is ready to part with tho Mosque of Umar, which stands sdcond only to Mecca as u sac red shrino. But tlio very fact that he is willing to sell anything, and especially to a «lew, is a wonder that our grand fathers would not Imvo belioVod. Our ago, however, is an ago of wonders, and particularly of wonders emanating from Constantinople. Tho fact ejpst that soino of tho hills around Jenisalem have already become Jewish property, and, us tho Sultan is willing to sell moro, perhaps wo may livo to seo tho whole city in the hands of tlio ancient owners, not through any now crusade, but by tlio peaceful conquest of a legiti mate bargain. Gray and pale bluo for in stance, do not combine well, both being cold colors. White and black aro safe wear, but tho latter Is not favorable to dark or pale complexions. Pink is, to some skins, the most becoming; not, howovov, if there Ib mucli color in tlio cheeks and Ups, and if there bo ovon a suspicioh of red in either linir or com plexion, Peach color is perhaps ono of the most elegant colors worn.
