£oct1rlj. [From the New York Lodger.] SONG OF SARATOGA. BY JOHN 0. SAXE. "Pray, what do they do at the Springs ?” The question is easy to ask 5 But to answer it fully, my dear, Were rather a serious task. And vot, in a kuttoring way, ■ As the magpie or inooking Wltl sings, 1 ’ll vonturo a bit of » *°ng . . To toll wliat tlioy do at the Springs! Imprimis, my darling, they drink Tlio waters so .parkling und clear; Though the flavor is none of tlio best, And tlio odor exceedingly queer; But the fluid Is mingled, you know, With wholesome medicinal things. So tlioy drink, and tlioy drink, und they 'drink,— , . , And that’s what tlioy do at tlio.springs! Then with appetites keen as a kill re, Tlioy hasten to breaklast or ditto ; I The latter precisely at three i Tlio t'orinor from soven till nine.) Vo gods l—what a rustic mid rush Whon tlio eloquent dinner-bill rings! Then they eat, and they oat, and tlioy cat,— And that’s what tlioy do at the Springs 1 Vow they stroll in tlio beautiful walks, Or loll in the shade of the troes; Where many a whisper is heard That never is told by tlio broozo; Ami hands are commingled with hands, Regardless of conjugal rings; And tlioy flirt, and tlioy flirt, and thoy flirt,— And that’s what thoy do at tlio Springs 1 The drawing-rooms now are ablaze, And music is shrieking away ; Tekpsiciiore governs the hour, And Fashion was never so gay! An arm ’round a tupering waist— How closely and fondly it clings; So thoy waltz, and they waltz, and they waltz,— And that’s what they do at tlio Springs! In short—as it goes in the world— Tlioy cat, and thoy drink, and tlioy sloop; Thoy talk, and they walk, and they woo; They sigh, and they laugh, and tlioy ween; They read, and they ride, and they dance;‘ (With other unspeakable tilings;) Thoy pray, and they pluy and they And that’s what they doat the Springs! Unity or Plurality or Races Wo invite tlio attention of Hebraists and philologists to the essay of Dr. S. A. Cartwright, which opens the August number of De liow'a Review. Referring to the Jlevieto for a full statement of Dr. Cartwright’s arguments, wo take tlio following extracts: If wo take the Hcbrow Bible for guide, and faithfully interpret it, there can bo but one opinion on the question. That book positively affirms that thoro wore, at least, two racos of intellectual ricatures with immortal souls, created at different times. Thus, in the 24th verse of tlio 1st chanter of Gonesis, “The Lord said, Lot tno earth bring forth intellectual creature* with immortal souls after their kind; cattle, and creeping thing, and beasts of tho earth after his the philanthropic British, to get the in digo culture of Hayti transferred to British India, contrived to rob tlio no- croosof their wliito masters, they re turned to the worship of tlio serpent.- Soulouune, although called Emperor, was the abject slavo of tho ferpont, and so was his wifo and all Ilia subject. Tho serpent, in every neighborhood, gov erns them more absolutely and Hyatt- ideally than any wliito man ever gov erned them. The serpent is kopl 111 a box, carefully guarded by tho conjurers. Tlioy aio thrown into an ecstatic state by touching tho box or coining near tlio sorpont, and in that state of ccstiicy or tcni]K>rary alienation of mind,; they make known tlio orders of tho snake divinity. From lH4.’l to 184U, tho or ders were to kill tho nmlattoes and take their property from thorn. Afterward, tho orders wore to '.regard all tho ne groes who could redd or white, or wore good clothing, to ho regarded and treat ed as nmlattoes. For proof of thysn facts, see a work written by Gustiiii d’Alaux, entitled “L’lfnipcrotir 8011I011- quo,” Paris, I860*. Insult to Sotulicrii Laities and Gen tlemen. parly of Southern Indies u ; . . excursionists to Niagara Fulls and other places, a hand hill, of which tho billow ing is a copy, was circulated through town of Marshall, Michigan : Republicans, to the Rescue/— I wo hun dred Southern slaveholders, with their slaves, will pass through our city this (Monday) afternoon, and will ditto lit tho depot. This is a flagrant violation of the laws of this State, approved February 15, 1850, which provides as fc I lowing: “ ‘Every person who shall bring any negro, mulatto, or other persons of color into tlio State, claiming him or her as a slave, shall ho punished by im prisonment in tho State prison not more than ten years, or by fine not ex ceeding 0110 thousand dollars.’—(Ses sion laws 1858, pages 520-7. 'Republicans, to Arms ! Strike for tlio memory of John Brown, Lincoln and froedom.’ •Marshall, Aug. 0,1800.” * Tins Henderson Fire.—Tho Shreve port (La.) Gazetto loams that one white man and six negroes have been arrested for being concerned in the burning of tho town of llendorson, Texas, and it is bolUyod that the proof is sufficient to convict, them* An abolition emissary, a book pedlar, was the instigator of the in furious deed. Unfortunately, tlio scoundrel made his escape. Mr. Ward, a minister living in Harri son county, killed a man who ho ob served talking with his negroes, and who refused to stato who ho was or what business ho -you* engaged in. In his carpet bag were found abolition documents, Ana ho is supposed to l>o the hook peddler who induced tho white man and negroes to burn Henderson. Hu believed it was an ourang-outmia and not a ser pent. If he had lived in Louisiana, instead of England, ho would have re- cognized tlw negro tjarda\er % ^ ^ tells cortain fact about negroes, which ing. liono but tho best informed planters and overseers know at the presont day. Tho most learned divines aro ignorant of them, not becauso thoy cannot read Hebrew, but becauso they cannot rend Hebrew re-wrifc in tho ne^ro. Plan ters and overseers rend it in tho ne groes, but don’t know ^ that it is He brew, and that their evidence, if they could rend Hebrew, would prove, in any Court of justico, to the satisfac tion of any Jury, that tho writer of Gcnosis know moro about negroes than they did. A star in the East hits lately anpenrod, throwing much light on tlio first chapter of Genesis, by mak ing plain to all observers a lot of inferi or races, pure tcrr'yjcM-, including giants, croated beforo Adam. C. Blattulmvd Thompson, of New England, a Hebrew scholar of the first-class, utter immi grating to Missouri, made tho discovery, that if the 24th verso of tho 1st chapter were literally and fully translated, it would save tho necessity of torturing Scripture nnd scientific truth to procure a wliito father and mother for tho Mis souri negroes and tho Missouri Indians. But Thomson, with all his learning, is far behind the pensman of tho hook of Genesis.in lm knowledge of that char acter. He did not know that tho most ntupidnegro is not only moro subtle than any beast of tho Hold, but has much more subtlety in many matters than tho wisest wliito man generally have/ TTo will find some overseer in Louisiana and Mississippi who aro aware of tho fact. For instance, a no gro can read an overseer much better than his master can, nnd cun instinct ively toll whether ho is a man of cour age, or can be imposed on or not, or whether ho can see through a nogro as tho negroes soe through him. The writer of Genesis knew it, and, express ed tho fact in that bundle of ideas, or epitomized history of tho negro charac ter shut up in the name ho gave to tho creature, which Eve mot with in the garden of Paradise. Nearly all the ancestors of tho no- groes now in the United States, woro tho slaves of the serpent before tlioy be came the slaves ofChristian white men.
