Tlii* fine composition is by William
llahkngdon, ana bears date 100a. It is a
gem in conception and execution:
When I survey the bright
Celestial sphere, .
{jo rich with jewels hung, that night,
Jioth like an Kthiop bride appear,
My soul her wings doth spread,
And Heavenward flies,
The almighty mysteries to road,
In the largo volumes of the skies.
For the bright firmiynont
Shoots forth no tlumo
So silent, but is elocpicnt
In speaking tlio Creator’s nattio.
No unregarded stnr
Contracts its light
Into so small a character,
Removed far from our human sight—
But if wo steadfast look
Wo shall discern
In it, as in some holy hook,
How many may hoavenly knowlodgo
learn.
It tells tlio conquoror
That Inr stretched powor, •
Which his proud dangers traffic for,'
Is hut the triumph of an hour.
That from the farthest North,
Sotno nation may
Yet undiscovered issuo forth,
And o’er his new got conquest sway.
Some nation, yet shut in
With hills of ice,
May ho lot out to scourgo his sin,
Till they shall equal him in vice.
And then they, likewise, shall
Their ruin have;
For as yourselves your empires fall.
Ami every kingdom hath a grave.

Politics in Thomas County.
Tmomasvii.i.k, 4th .Sep. 18(10.
Dear Republican .-—This has been a
great day for tlio friends of tlio “Union
tho Constitution and tlio enforcement of
the Laws,” in Thomas. John K. Alex
ander, Esq., mado a demolishing speech
to an audience of about six hundred. !
lie is known to l>o a good lawyer, but
to-day was tho first time ho has umde u
political speech sinco ho lias sojourned
in this place, and he has showed him
self to he as strong on the “rostrum,”
as at the bar. Had I known tho stroiigth
of tlio speaker, I would lmvo gono pre
pared, ntul sketched his speech and
sent you a synopsis. His argument, in
favor of the record of Bell and Everett
was tho best I over heard. It is true,
lie had a good subject, and he did am
ple justice to those worthy conservative
patriots whoso character is lining mis
represented and maligned by every
Brookinridgo speaker and editor in tho
United States.
Mr. Alexander gavothe “secret” his
tory of the secession movement at Char
leston, it? public history is known and
read of all men, but the secret portion
is only now being devoloped. That
speech that Yancey made at Columbia
S. C., last year, in which he gavo tlio
programme of tho secession movement
as clearly as ho could now write out his
history• was well managed, and turned
to good, account, Tho Breckinridge
rmrty, ns a party, do not intend a disso
lution of this Union, hut their len
ders do, and they will be lod to a point
at which they will be compelled to di
vide-the spoils or buck out from their
demand.
