8«reetly fall the Dewf.
Sweetly fall the dew* of night,
Gently twalli the evening air,
And tho’moon, with maiden bright.
Walks dreora-like cohere:
And the dower now fold* lior leaf,
And tli* hath oeaced his hum ;
Slumber still* tlio mourner's grief—
Rapture, too, ic dumb.
Not a murmur waken the nhore,
Fill’d with Htrifr nnd sorrow longs
And, in plane of ocean's roar,
There* a breath of song 1
All’s not grlof that nature knows,
Skies are never all o'or-enst.
And, from Heaven, a sweet repose,
Anguish wins at lost.
Wherefore battle with the cloud,
When the morrow’s calm is nigh ?
Even os wo brood above the shroud,
Hark the lullaby I
For euoli joy that fliew to-doy,
Ono more bright the morrow brings j
For each door bird flown away,
Ono to morrow sings.

The Union Meeting in New York*
The grand Union demonstration at
tho Cooper Institute last evening (says
the tfernld of tho 18th inst.,) was an
overflowing and enthusiastic affair.
Such a united and popular movement
has perhaps, nover taken place In this
city. The utmost harmony prevaded the
proceedings and the proposition to n|>*
point a committee to nominate one
straight-out Union ticket for tho defeat
of Ike Black Republicans, was received
with such applause and heartiness of on-
tktaslesu as are seldom'‘witnessed. The
meeting was nddrcvsod by gentlemen
from different States of the Union, and
the proooedings were on tho whole, very
interesting. A grand torchlight proces
sion of the Union Leagues nnd Minute
Men took place in connection witli
the demonstration, and at a late hour
the immense gathering, inside and out
side of tho Institute, broke up with
loud cheers for tho Constitution and
one straight-out Union ticket. Among
theorginiHitioiis on hand, during tho
night, was the Union League, No. 1, of
South Hrooklyn, wluch woa formed pre
viously to the fusion at Syracuse, by
Tliomus .Shankland. It was tho first
league organised by tho friends of tho
Union, during tho present campaign, to
<1 cleat tho llluck Republicans.

Five Men Poisoned for Stbai.inu

the present week has this item:
VTo loarn that somo man in Iowa, not
far from Mercer county, Mo., being nn-
noyod very much with persons stealing
water-melons, put poison in some of
thorn. Five men who wont into his
inolosure, without leave or license, got
hold of some of these poisoned melons,
and ato them, then and there. Three
of tho party were found dead in tho in-

is supposed that tho two died just as
they got ovar the fence.
An Awful Death.—On tho 13th of
August an awful occurrence took plnco
in front of 8t. Fetor's Church, SnuLury
