Tho New York Fusion.
All parties, oxcopt of course tho
Black Republicans, regard Lincoln’s
election as the direst calamity that
could befall tho country, and the inevit
able prelude to tho destruction of tho
Union, at an earlier or later day. The
alms and designs of the Black Republi
can party aro such that if carried out
in tho administration of tho govern
ment, would rcduco the South to a con
dition of most degrading inequality.—
Our constitutional rights would be tramp-
cled on, our honor dost royed and our pro
perty taken from us, or rendered worth
less, and oven dangerous to their own
ers. Wo could not, ifitwero our pur
pose to mako tho attempt, picturo the
evils to our section which must surely
onsuro if tho Black Republicans in tho
event of thoir elevation to power, should
dare to onforco their policy; but wo will
word say, that they would ho of
such a character, that no people with
ono spark of the patriotism of our rovo- 1
Inlionnry sires, would tolemlo ono mo
ment longer than would ho required to
throw oil' the yoke placed upon them
by fanatics and tyrants.
This state of things every friend of
tho South, of tho Constitution, of tho
Union and of the human raco must
wish to avert. Tho Southern people
erf themselves, cannot do this, for if ovory
electoral vote of ovory Southorn .State
he cast for one candidate, the North still
hns tho power to defeat him. Wo have
then looked anxiously to tho conserva
tive men at the North to come to the
reseno in this hour of peril, and our
hopes rose high when wo beheld thorn,
as we thought, throwing off party dis
tinctions and prejudices and uniting
cordially in this noble cause. Some
weeks ago tho Douglas and Bell parties
agreed upon a combination tickot, and
it was only necessary for tho supporters
of Breckiuride toco-oporato with them
to securo tho overthrow of Black Re
publicanism in New York, and defeat
its candidate for tho Presidency.
Tho Breekinridgo Executive Com
mittee mado a proposition which tho
friends of tho fusion movement In the
Southern States, considered favorable,
and desired its acceptance, All except
partisans in tho State of Now York
were willing to accept it and with tho
united strength of conservatism to meet
the enemies of the country. Tho dark
clouds that hung over tho UnionBogan
to break and patriots thought they saw
Hie beginning of hotter days. But
Stephen A. Dougins and his wire pullers
in Now York, with some design whlohwe
will not attempt to fathom, contempta-
blcnnd insignificant in hnportancowben
compared with the vast and momentous
consuquences which hang upon tho sue
cess or failure of the movement, tejoct-
ed tho propqsition and at ono blow
dashed'tp' tho earth the hopes of the
country.

That Victory in Florida.
Tho Breekinridgo press continue to
publish tho roturns from Florida, with
‘‘glory enough for ono day” and such
like expressions, annexed to almost
to every county. Somehow, they omit
to compare the voto with that given at
tho last election, which wo have done,
and find that almost in ovory county the
Democratic strength has been material
ly reduced, and that.if tho Democrats
carry tho State at all, it will bo a victory
without a triumph.

J 1 our November election. The mate
's aro abundant for a popular conscr-
oopor
of New York, and in view of tho threat
ening perils, arranged a combination
ticket, which they believed would prove
satisfactory to all parties and especially
to tho voters of tho State. On this
grand spectacle—tho masses burying
party feuds |and forgetting party dis
tinctions und uniting as brethren in an
honest, patriotic effort to save tho
Union—ovory lover of that Union gazed
in admiration and thoir confidence in
tho patriotism of tho pooplo was lestor-

sol fish ness of demagogues wero all dis
regarded. They would mako the pro.
servation of tho Union subordinate to
tho success of thoir ambitious schemes,
and their counsels could lead to nothing
it evil. The people directly and deeply
interested in this groat quest ion, behov
ing tho safety of tho Union paramount
to tho success of partisans and dema
gogues, spoko their will.
But another difficulty was presented,
and this time hy tho Breckinridge lead
ers. James T. Brady the Breekinridgo
candidate for Governor in New York
and Daniel S. Dickinson, tho head and
front of that party, boldly denounce thii
fusion ticket and advise their friends
not to support it. And their objection
is about as shallow and absurd as that
mado by the Douglas loaders to tho
other ticket, and It is still exceedingly
doubtful whether, with this dissension,
tho Black Republicans in New York
,n bo defeated.
Tho Bell party in New York havo
throughout manifested a commend
willingness to unite all the opponents
to Black Republicanism, and their con
duct stanclsin admirablo contrast with
tho action of the other parties. And,
while tho courttepursued by the friends
of Douglas and Breckinridge, prov
that they look upon tho defeat of
Lincoln ns of less importance than
sonic paltry advantage to their parties,
the supporters of Bell havo clearly
shown thnt’thoy aro tho true frionds of
tho .South and tho Union.
Wo sincerely hope tho Cooper Insti
