Lincoln as a Discoverer.—It seems
that sovoral of Lincoln's vessels witnessed
tlm bombardment and- surrender of
Fort Sumter, without venturing any
aid to the Fort. Wo take it for granted
that they obeyed tho ordor of their

has discovered a new uso for Unitod

Throughout tho day, although it was
quite rainy, an excited crowd filled the
sidewalk in front of the Herald office,
on Fulton and Nassau streets, and gaz

to that bstablishmcut. Tho American

at tho Herald oilico seemed to excite
tho public indignation, ur.d tlio popu

such a course w.w persisted in, they
would mob the establishment. A commiteo
of gontlomen called on tho proprietor
cf tho Horalil during tho forenoon, and
suggested that, \f lie winked to save his
“institution" from attach, he must display the
titars and >Slrij>es.
About 4J o’clock an American ensign
was slowly dropped out of au upper
window. Commingled groans nud
cheers greeted this tardy compliance
with tho wishes of tho people. Soon
aftonvards another flag attached to a
staff was displayed from a window of
tho second story. It having been ru

police of tho soveral down town sta

selves ready to be culled upon at u mo

that the Herald's Knginoer had arrang

Rumors aro afloat that secret move
ments are now in progress in this vicin

Jersey into tho secession movement un-
dor tho management of tho Knights of
the Golden Circle. Wo understand that
private meetings have been held recent
ly in reference to this project, which is
to ho attempted in correspondence with
similar movements in New York. Thoio
is no doubt that some of our m inufac-
turers, who are largely interested in Iho
.Southern trade would favor a move
ment of this kind, hut the i*ooplo at
largo would certainly not tolcmta any
scheme that is to be carried out upon

The manifestations of political lead
