\ complete Fnilure in their Plans
Tlio following articlo from tho New
York Tribune shows thnttho Abolitionists
anticipated an easy victory at paries ton.
Put they "counted without their host,"
and, although their plans wero quite
complete, they failed as they always
will, in whipping tho Souln into sub
jection:
Siuco it is certain that Fort Sumter
to lie strengthened by tho introduc
tion of provisions, and, in case resis-
iuhco is oil’ered, of men also, all eyes
are now turned to that point. Under
tho present circumstances, it scorns
i.lain tlmt tlio statement lately made,
according to which twenty thousand
men would bo needed to toliovo Fort
smnter, was not put forth with that de
gree of authority which was supposed;
Vor, instead that largo number it would
oem that tho wholo body of soldiers
despatched on the expedition cannot
much, if any, exceed twenty-live hun
dred.
The expedition appears to have been
planned with special referenco to the nc-
,-ssity of fighting the provisions and rdiforce-
{ cnts into the forts. That this necessity
will arise at the outset, we do not suppose there
can le much doubt. Indeed, should «lol-
ferson Davis, with whom tlio decision
of the question rests, command peace,
wo do. not suppose that the'people eg Char-
Aston tcou&l obey. He may safely conclude,
therefore, that a sanguinary contest is dote, at
hand. Tho intelligence from Charleston
represents almost tho ontiro communi
ty as rushing to arms ; tho number of
men already in tho ranks is upward of
live thousand, and hourly arrivals from
different parts'of tho Stato.aro increas
ing tho numbor. It is evident, then,
that tho disparity iu numliors will bo
very great; but noither numbors nor
noito generally docido contests such ns
this will bo.
’Extensive preparations liavo boon
made, and largo sums of money expen
ded by tlio Rebels, but almost exclu
sively with referonco to tho reduction
of Fort .Sumter, and to prevent vessels
from reaching tho fort by tho usual
channels of tho harbor. To fortify tlio
entire const so as to provont tho land
ing of opposing forces either abovo or
bolow lias not to any groat extent on-
l erod in to th t?vr plans. There aro batte
ries at difl’orent points up ami down tho
shore, but a few shots and shills from a ves-
sd of war would soon silence them, and the
landing of soldiers would le.a comparatively
cn*u “'Alter. Wo may conclude that in
cose tlio introduction of provisions into
tho fort is resistod with determination,
tlio operations for relieving tho garrison
will bo ctmjrrthtnsm ancl complete, No
doubt the plan has been matured with skill
and with a thorough knowledge of qfl the situ
ations, and that it will be executed with the
sagacity and bravery we are accustomed, to find
in our army.
The sending out of so many steamers
of light draught, 'heavily armed, like
tho ‘Harriot Lauo’ and ‘Pawnee,’ indi
cates that the battories on tho islands
that form tho lips of tho Charleston
harbor nro to bo engaged in front, while
it is ovident from tho shijmiontof boats
and other appointments for landing
men through tho serf, together with
the considerable number of hoivitzora
for launches, that a largo force is to bo
. landed to attack these batteries in the flank.
To withstand such an attack, tlio Hob-
els are but ill prepared. Whilo of field
batteries they liavo nono whatever,
i heir numerous infantry would offer
but poor resistance to tho terrible flying
artillery which forms so peculiar a fea
ture iu tho expedition'that has just left
our harbor. Numbors would but add
to the slaughter of tho opposing forces,
who liavo only siogo batteries to resist
attack by sea, but neither breast-works
nor other protcotion on their flank.
Their men unquestionably possess any
conceivable amount of dash and daring
but these qualities will not enable them
to stand before tho field batteries winch
won Palo Alto and ltesnca, which dec
imated the scarcely less chivalrous uml
infinitely hotter appointed and drilled
Tampico regimonts, scattering them
like chaff before tho frightful discharges
of tho Ringgold battery, the same that
will be employed at Charleston in opening the
way of relief to Fort tiuinUv.
The eminent soldier who has plann
ed tho expedition, has lmd full benefit
of tho (complete knowledge of the sur
roundings of Charleston, which may bo
obtained at Washington, lie, ho doubt,
understands, thoroughly that thcro are
inlets or water-passages to the rear of
Sullivan’s, Moms’, rihd Jarvis’ Islands,
through which, at high tido, vessels of
considerable draft cun pass, on tho one
side connecting Coopin', and on tho oth
er, Ashley River, with the open sea; so
that, although Major Anderson may
command tho harbor, communication
between tho batterios of tho rebels and
the city will not thereby bo cut off. Tlio
possession of these inlets or passages,
will, therefore, bocomo important} not
alone, however, completely to cut oil’
tho enemy’s rear, hut, it may lx?, for
th© introduction of Federal troops, and
subsequent operations. Through these
channels the city of Charleston, and
tlio inner lmrbor, muy readily bo readi
ed. All tlio fortifications of tho rebels
arc situatod on the.outer harbor, which
is one mile from tho'city, and two and
live-eights miles from Fort Sumtor, ox-:
cept C’astlo Piokney, which is onqmilo
from the city and two and five-eights
miles front Fort Sumter, and Fort
.Johnson, which is two and a quitter miles
from the city, and loss than a milo from
i’ ort Sumter. C’astlo Picknoy is really
of no greu.1 account, and should it bo
como nocossary could be silenced by
Fort Sumter. Tho sumo may, in a
great measure, bo said of Fort Johnson.
Tho gaining of an entrance to tho in
ner harbor withoutencountering tho’cor-
don of the battories directed against
Fort Sumtor, -ancl which line tho outer
harbor, may ho said to bo practicable,
the inlets referred to being defended
by batteries that can readily be silenced
some might dosir
