Dear Courier: -Simm yoHtcnlay all
is boon quiot in and ubout our camp.
Tlioro has not, no lar ns I have board,
boon oven a skirmish between the out
posts. We suppose tho Federalists are
oolobraling tho day at Murtinslmrg.
Wo could distinctly bear cannon about
noon. In tho skirmish of tho 2d, near
Martinnburg. 20 of oqr men nro missing
besides tho two killed and seven woun
ded ; they wero probably taken priso
ners. Seventy-four of tho LincoluUcs
were taken prisoners ni)d soipc suy 200
of thorn killed.
Wo lmvo dono first into eating and
resting to-day, and will ho in excellent
condition for hard work to-morrow. I
was quite sure yesterday there would ho
a light to-day—it did not occur—what
will happen to-morrow 1 will not at.
•tempt to predict, hut to mo a light
seems much less probable than yester
day. 'flic cncm t , have full possession
j of Martinsburg—they number about
3000. Nearly every citizen except thoso
of notorious Union .sentiments wero
taken prisoners. AJ. 1).

j We arc gratified to learn that our fol
low townsman, Col. J. W. II, Unuf.r-
1 woon, is organizing a Regiment for Vir-
| glnia service, ami expects immediato
orders.'
Companies applying would do well
to arm themselves as completely as pos.
sihle with home arms, so as not to bo
detained, should tlioro he a delay of two
or three weeks in getting improved
weapons.
Col. Underwood hns secured the ser
vices of Lieut. Henry Cleveland, late of
tho Army, and other competent drill-
officers, and lias already some seven
companies in his Regiment.
Lieut.•Cleveland, who is at present
stopping hero, was formerly connected
with tho editor nl department of tho
Augusta Constitutionalist, but who, like
many oilier gallant spirits in the same
position, concluded that, in the present
juncture, the sword was mightier tiffin
the pep, and thereforo lie, at his coun
try's bidding, would use that awhile.
We understand lie is a thorough and
lliciont drill oilfcer.

This organization will no doubt ho
more efficient and satisfactory than Ah.

some fifty men, and is daily receiving
accessions.
Cherokee Artillery.
Capt. Yeiser, of tho Artillery, has
been in our city for tho past few days,
beating up recruits, and procuring arti
cles necessary for tho thorough outfit of
))is coiqpauy, as ho expects to roooivo
marching orders for Virginia in a very
short time.
They havy already a splendid half
battery, consisting of three brass six
pounders, and will receive, in a short
time, three iron ritted guns from No-'
blc’s foundry, .making a lull battery,
so they will go ready for aotivo and
immediato service.
Capt. Y. would like to r?ceivo gomo
twelve or fifteen more recruit*, and any
I persons wishing to join tho company
can see him to-day, as ho does not leave
until to-night, or at any time after tills,
by applying to Col. C. M. Pennington
#35Mt is rather discouraging to see
busipess at such a low ebb. Tho mer
chants nil seem to ho content, however
to wait patiently for tho return of bet
ter days. W« hoped that when wheat
ready for market, there would I
a demand for it, at good prices, and
business wruld resumo something of
its accustomed activity, but it) this, as
in many other thifigs, . wo have been
disappointed.
