Camp Bartow*, near Manassas,
.September Otli, 1801.
Pear Courier : It is sometimes ft sat.
^faction to hear from ono’s friends, even
if they have nothing of exciting inter*
cat to common irate. I presume upon
that fact in tho prosoht writing, Our
Regiment continues in about tho same
stato of hoalth, that it has been for tho
past throo weeks. Somo liavo recover
ed and others became Indisposed.
Tliero are now no cases of dangerous
illnoss in this camp, or of mem
bers of it in other places that I know
oT. Measles still prevail to a largo ox-
tfnf, nearly every now recruit taking
this disease, when ho first comes into
qxutp. It is bcliovcd that somo arc
having it tho second time. Charley
Tlnrpor is just recovering from tho Mea
sles, and ho is suro ho lmd the diseaso
scvoral years since. Tho assurance Hint
it is proof or his good looks, did not
scorn to be much satisfaction to him,
when tho fovor was on, and ho could
tasto nothing else. Sanfoid William
son has got them “good,” broko out os
full ns can be. lie is a littlo too sick
to joko, but yet is doing woll. Thorn
are ft fow cases of Mumps. Tho vic
tims of tliis diseoso arc laughed at for
their consolation, and have nothing to
do but "grin and boar it."
There was rather ft singular surgical
operation performed Inst Saturday, on
A. J. Bearden, of our company. It
will be mnoiubevcd that ho received a
slight wound in tho head, in tho lmttlo
of the 21st. It soon healed ovor and
lie thought no more of it, except occn*
hlonally an unpleasant sensation in tho
vicinity of tho wound, and thoro was a
small rising. lie wont to our assistant
Surgeon, Dr. McFarland, who told him
tliero was somo foreign substnuco be
tween the skin and skull. Mr. Boar-
den consented to tho operation, and
tho Dr. soon cut out a buck-shot, that
had fiuttened on tho skull, until its
thickness was about ono third tho diam
eter. 11 was located abovo tho loft oar
nwWm tho oval part of tho skull. It
is singular that this shot should have
boon tliero forty eight days, and ho not
know it.
Capt. J. F. Cooper is reported to liavo
died Inst Thursday night. His com
mission as Major, I understand, was
locolvod to-day. Ills sufferings must
have boon of tho most oxorutiatlng
kind, llo was a man of great enorgy
and determination, nml sorved his
country with a zeal surpnssod by fow
"Peace to his ashes."
Wo distinctly hoar cannonading

their way to Richmond, taken somo*

movo soon, but until furtlior notico
our mail matter should bo dii'oclod to

Tho sick of tho Light Guards, except
a fow yet in camp, are in Gordonsvillo,
and doing woll. They miss Dr. Grego
ry very much, and it is to bo liopod
that ho will hasten back. Send him
along. Doubtless tho Romans would
like to keep him thoro, but wo must
have him hare. Tho sick of tho Miller
Rifles and Floyd Infantry are scattered
at various pieces, and oven tho ofticors
of-those companies do not know whore
they all are. But so far ns they can
learn thoro uro nono very sick. It is
really wonderful that tliero should bo
so much sickness in this itegimont, and
so few dontlis—tliero having boon but
tlirco since tho bnttlo. Tills is proba
bly duo to tho great caro of the compa
ny oflicors, and the excellent and skill
ful treatment of tho Surgeons.
Tliero has boon considerable cxcito*
ment in regard to our Regimental UiU-
cors. Tho War Department has decid
ed that nil vacancies in this Regiment,
will bo filled by regular proclamation.
This makes Mqj. Thos. L. Cooper Lifti-
tenant Colonel—ho roccivcd his com
mission this morning—and throws him
in command, until Col. Gardner recov
ers. Col. Cooper is a fino, accomplish
ed gentleman, and with study and ex
perience will doubtless make an oxool'
Jout commandor; but tliero is a very
strong dcsiro to have a regular army
officer to command us. This is not
lUcoly to bo gintified.
’ M. D.
nvd Is Captain, nml has hern transferred
to that command. Coon is every inch
a good follow, ono of the best of good
singers, and on account of bis over pre
vailing good humor, splendid singing
nml gonorous feelings, ho will bo muoli
missed from the company. Howard Is
n fine fellow and possesses excellent ac
complishments, of both head and heart,
and will doubtless make an excellent
Captain. Wo confidently hope that
tlieso men, both formerly members of
tho Light Guards, and with us on tho
glorious 21st, may win unfading laurels
in their now spliero nml association.
llama nml Wade both arrived hero
last week, nml tho hoys pitfoyed koonly
the literary feast tliat they brought, in
tho epistolary form. Wade, by somo
mishap left tho boxes entrusted to bis
caro at Lynchburg, and lias now gono
back after them. The siek, so far ns I
can learn, are doing well—none in tho
Floyd compnnios very siek.
All communications for tho present,
shuld bo directed to Manassas, and they
will lie forwarded to us if wo leave tho
