Bivouac of 8tu Georgia Reo., |
Mud/s Cross Hoads, \
Sunday, Oot. O f 1891. j
Bear Courier:—This is a bcautiM,
pleasant Sabliath morning, and a ..sort
of Sunday quiet and sorone placidity
pervades tho rude tabernacles of our
temporary abodo. It would, probnbly,
bo an Interestipg sight to our friends
at hbmc, if they could 800 us, the
very person ideation of half retted
authorised weariness, in. our present situation,
under and about our extemporised
shelters. Tho place of bivouae is in
tho skirt of a pino thicket, on tho
margin of an old field. Tbb different
messes, composod of from four to six
mon eaoli, liavo all built littlo bough
liouses, by sticking two crotches about
six foet high In tho ground, laying a
polo in theso, and thon placing others
with ono end on this and the other on
tho ground, at an angle of about 46
degrees, and making a sort of tliatch*
ed roof of pine boughs, with bushes
stood up nt tho rides. This dcicrip*
Hon seems to bo tho idea of forma-
tion, hut it has not been realised, in
tho samo way, in any two Instances;
each moss taking advantage of tho
ground, ntijnoent trees and convenient
materials. The men are more in
groups, many reclining on their blankets
in their shantes, rehearsing past Inch
dents nnd acts, and discussing the pro
babilities of futuro movements. A
sort of good untured, thoughtful quiet
prevails, and many a low sigh nnd
fervont player has boon breathed for
tho lovod ones at homo. It’s a sweet
thought that wo are remembered there,
nnd that at this very hour, tho uni
ted prayers of assembled thousands,
are ascending to the Throne of Grace,
for the protection and preservation of
tho Coufedorato army, and tho success
of our glorious cuuse.
Tills duty tho Regiment is now on,
that of advanced guard, is decidedly
tho most unpleasant in- the service.—*
In the first plaoe, it is necessary to
leave the regular camp without tents,
and with just as few incumbrances to
a rapid and forced march as possible.
Not too much provisions, a sparce al
lowance of blankets, camp chests and
cooking utensils, and no sparo doth
ing at all are to be token. Tho result
is, that after tho second or third day,
various articles, such ns salt, popper,
vinegar, coffee, soap, clean towels, to,
bacco, Ac., S:b„ elthor from loss or Im
prudent Use, give out, and then com
mences a general system of borrowing
and begging, greatly to the annoy
ance of thous who have theso little
comforts. Then, picket duty is pnrtlc*
uhu-ly unpleasant. A regiment fills a
Hue about two miles long, nnd two
or tlireo companies aro detailed nt a
time to occupy it. The line of piokets
is about half a mile iu advance of tho
regiment. The posts are from two to
tour hundred yards apart, from three
to six men aro stationed at each, and
here they aro to remuiu, keeping up
the most vigilant look-out and hearoul
for twenty-four hours. At least two, at
each post, are required to ho on tho
watch all the time. The general in
si ructions are to see and not bo soon,
hear ami not he heard, to shoot down
01* take ns prisoners any small number
of tho enemy approaching, for men
adjacent posts to rally on one at
tacked, and If overcome, (lieu all, to
rally ut the placo agreed upon for the
company; if the enemy should lie seen
too large number to atluck, then
tho men ure to firo off their guns
signal, mid rally at once on tho compa
uy ground.
These lines of piokets, it will bo re
memhered, aro placed close up—some
times within three or four hundred
yards to where the enemies lines are
known to uo occupied. Kvory reader
may guess for himself what his feel
ings would be while acting as sentinel
on such a post. Of course nil do not
xperionio the same; hut all, If they
are faithful to their duty, are obliged
to be in a state of constant apprehension
and expectation, that nt the next in
stout lie may seo the Hessians, cither
prowling about or approaching. This
state of horrid suspense and anxiety
produco all tho unpleasant sensations
incident to going into battle, nnd ybt
is ontircly dovoid of the stimulating
excitements of such an occasion. Be
side all these, every good soldier is
jealous of Ids fame, and. I10 thinks
ho should bo killed, wounded, or ta-
kon prisoner while on picket, there
would bo no glory attaohed to tho af
fair, nnd lie would only receive a pas
sing notice, that it occurred in a little
skirmish, and ho would soon pass out
of mind. But though those duties are
unpleasant to many, yet there is no
apparent skirnklng book from them
and each regiment willingly, so far ns

constant preparation, aro Doing inado,

slok of the entire army, in advance of
Manassas hava boon sent ‘back to that
place, and other planes this side, and
all the bnggago, except wliat Is ah»o
lutoly necessary, anil can ho carried ot.
a forced march, is bclng sent hack tu
that depot.
Ho says a detail of five men from each
Regiment, In tlio vicinity of Fairfax
Court-house, lias boeti sent back, to
gather up and bring huok all those who
Imve boon sick or wounded, and are
now sufficiently well to do duty. It is
thought, that between their own love of
tlio comforts of life, and the kind invi
tations of tlio hospitable Virginians,
there may bo many staying away Who
ought to ho in camp, and who are now
able to do severe duty, as a majority
those there.
Mr. Dwlnoll says it has been busied
about camp, that there is a possibility
of tlio 8th Rogiment being oidercd to
tli. coast of Georgia. He says such an
order would be hailed with exceeding
joy.
