addition to the brilliant
achievements at Big Bethel, Osrthage,
Bull Run, Manassas, Osk Hill, As., who
will dare to aay that our army is ineffi

confession from our foes at home and
abroad, that the courage and skill of
leaders and soldiery are worthy of
admire'ion. We have stopped the
exultant invader, and hare deposed
from power the “first military chieftain
of tlieage”—have unhorsed Gen. after
General of the enemy, and have com
pelled him to propose to import Gara-
baldi from Europe. And yet there are
a few malcontents who are eternally
earping because nothing is done, whose
watchword is, "On to Washington.”
These men would do well to reflect,
that haste is not always speed in mili
tary affsirs, and the slower is some
times the faster way.
If it had been the intention of our
Generals to attack Washington, there
bM ticen up to this tirno an insuperable
difficulty in the way, owing to the
dreadful sickness in onr Totoniuc
army.
No one believe* that Washington
could be taken, by direct assault, with-
ou* a loss of life which could not he
justified by the success, if ever so cer
tain. As to liberaUng Maryland, it is a
little (Quixotic to attempt to fight our
own battles, and those of a people who
have never evinced a di«i>oaition to de
fend themselves.
We would he glsd to help the de
serving of Maryland, but we candidly
believe they are a small portion of the
State, and it is our decided conviction
tliat we can never succeed in any state
where the lory element pre|tonderaCes.
With the profoundest deference to
tho wisdom of President Davis, sed lib
chieftains in the field, we feel willing to
rejoice in tho past, slid to be terigned
