Respect Labor—A Word for Work.
A gentleman Is a man who is gentle.
Titles, graceful accomplishments, su
perior culture, princely wealth, great
talents unci genius do not constitute a
•nan with all tho attributes needed to
make a gentleman. He may be awk
ward, angular, homely or poor, and yet.
belong to tho uncrowned aristocracy.
His face may be bronzed at tho forge
or bleached at tlio mill—bis hand huge
and large —his patched vest, like
Joseph's coat, (of many colors—and
ho may still bo a truo gontloman. The
dandy is a dry goods sign, and not a
gontloman, for no depends upon honor
and virtue for his passport to good so
ciety. “'The man who lias no money is
poor— lie who has nothing but inonoy
is poorer than he,” and is not n gentle
man. Some of tho moBt distinguished
men in the world of letters —in the
world of art—have been unamiable—
gross—vulgar—ungcntlo—consequently
not gentlemen.
“You aro a plebean,” said ft patrician
fo Cicero. “1 am a plebean,” said the
eloquent Roman; “tho nobility of my
family begins with mo; that of yours
will end in you.” 1 hold that no man
deserves to bo crowned with honor
whose life is a failure: and he who
lives only to cat and drink and accu
mulate money is a failure. The world
is no better for bis living in- it. IIo
never wiped a tear from a sad face-
never kindled a firo upon a frozen
hoarth. I roncat with emphasis, lie is
n failure. There is no flesh in his
heart: ho worships no god but gold.
Even here at the South there aro per
sons who deem it discreditable and un-
gentlemanly to labor, hence vast multi
tudes of young men shirk the yoke of
toil, and rush headlong into professions
und positions for which thoy aro totally
disqualified.
There is true dignity In labor, and no
true dignity without it. IIo who looks
down scornfully on labor isUko Hermes
who had a mouth and no hands, nml
yet made faces at those who fed him—
mocking tho fingers that brought bread
to his lips.
He who writes a book, or builds a
house, or tills a farm, or foUows any
useful employment liscs to some pur
pose. and contributes something to the
fund of human happiness.
Look at tho farmer, lie has a share in
the bank; but his bonk is a bank ' of
loam, his sliaro is a plow-share, and the.
more his share breaks his bank, the
greater will be his dividends. IIo need
not send his notes to Now York to
bo redeemed, for nature has endorsed
them.
Garibaldi, the greatest horo of the
age, is » working man. Henry Clay was
the mill, boy of tho slashes. Daniel
Webster knit his iron frame into
strength by working on bis father’s
farm when young. The men who hove
blood enough in their veins to work
tho brain millsjupon their shoulders,
are men wha labor.—Exchange.
