Tho llichinond Whig of the 7th has
tho following :
Centrevu.i.k. Within Hearing or)
the Enemy’s Gens, Oct. 3,1801. J
To the En’ns or the Rich mono Whig—
Gentlemen'. My attention has just
boon called to an unfortunate contro
versy now going on relative to the re-
publication of a synopsis of my report
of the battle of Mi: missus.
None can regret this more than 1 do.
It has been dono without my ktiowl-
edge or authority. The President is
thu solo judge of wlion, and what parts
of tho roport of a commanding officer
may bo mado public, ludmdunlly,
I do not object to delaying its publica
tion so long as tho War Depart men t
thinks it proper, or noccssnry to the suc
cess of our causo.
Meanwhile, 1 entreat my friends not
to trouble themsolves about refuting
tho slandors and calumnies aimed at
mo.
Alcibiadcs, on eorlnin occasions, re
sorted to extraordinary methods to
occupy tho minds of his traducors.—
Lot, then, that synopsis nnswor tho
same purposo for mo in this lnstanco.
If certain minds cannot understand tho
difference betwoon patriotism, the high
est civic virtuo, ami office ' seeking, the
lowest civic occupation, 1 pity them
from tho bottom of my heart.
Suffice it to say ; that 1 prefor the
respect and esteem of my countrymen,
to tho admiration of tho world. I
liopo, for the sako of our cause and
country, to bo ablo, with the assistance
of a kind Pioridonco, to answer my
calumniators with new victories ovor
our national enemies ; but I havo noth
ing to ask of tho country, or Govern
ment, or my friends, except to afford
mo all tho aid they can, in tho groat
struggle in which wo uro now onga-
god.
I am neither a candidate, nor dosiro
to bo a candidate, for any civil office
within tho gift of tho noople, or tho
Exooulivo. Tho aim of my ambition,
aftor having contributed my mito in
the dcfenco of our sacred causo, and
assisted, to tho best of my abilities, in
securing our rights and indcpondouco
us n nation, is, to retiro to private lifo
—my means then permitting—noror
again to lcavo my homo lor any posi
tion or occupation, unless it bo to light
anew the battles of my country,
Vory respectfully,
Your most ob’tSorv't,
G.T. BEAUREGARD.
“Behold, as tho eyes of sorvnnts look unto
tho hand of their musters, and ns tho eyeB
if u maiden Unto thu linmi of hor mistress,
no ouroycB wait upon tho Lord our God.”
I’sai.u 123, v. 2.
Such is, and should bo, (rotnnrks tho
Tallalmssoo Floridian,) tho nttitudo of
tho South towards Goa. In "tho very
commencement of difficulties, wo “hum
bled ourselves under his mighty hand”
by fasting and prayer; and from that
time to this, our wholo pooplo continuo
to pray unto Him, who "dooth accord
ing to his will among tho inhabitants
of Earth, and among tho armies of
Hoavon. And Ito has heard our pray
ers and given us many victories, some
of which wore against fearful odds.
Witness tho buttles of Mauassns and
Leesburg, not to mention that of Both-
•1 Churoli, and many other smaller on*
igoments. The panic at the field of
Tunassas was truly wonderful, and
ruck all tho boholders with astonish-
• • -Mil. To what is this attributed? Can
»• not recognize therein tho hand of
l himself, striking terror into tho
• -'Ufa of our enemies? Tho famous
i n k of Napoleon, that “ho had al-
••v.s found Providence with thoso who
. d tho heaviest artillery,” though sugac-
. -us is strongly tinged with unboliof—
tin- Bible everywhere teaching tho Prov
idence of God, and his direct govern
ment of tho world.
“Tho buttle is not to the strong,” wo
have hud abundant proof, though our
enemies havo found that tho raco is
often to tho swift; and it becomes us
ever to acknowledge tho goodness of
God in giving us tho victory, and still
to prostrate ourselves at his foot, in
buinblo prayer and supplication. lie
has blessed us with ubunuunt crops, so
that we have no fear of famino before
• air eyes; and thotlgh wo may bo cut
short in many of our usual luxuries,
we will boar privations with cheerful
spirits, having in view the glorious re
ward—tho indopenpence of our belov
ed country. Such a spirit of patriotism
and self-denial as is abroad in our land,
such energy and determination was
never before exhibited by any nation ;
and with tho blessing of God upon us,
wo never can be subdued. While uso-
ing all tho moans which God lias given
us to onsuro tho succoss of our causo,
let us pray continually to Him in whose
hands nro our destinies, and let us
come with pure hearts and holy
bauds, determined Ho do His will in all
things.
Coffee.—Wo learn by tho lust
Texas papers that a train from the
Rio Grnnclo recently brought to San
Antonio 500 sacks of cotVee. It is
thought that a brisk trade will spring
up in that section of country—coffeo
will bo brought in and cotton taken
out to Mexico.
JB@-The Savannah Republican says,
for tho information of persons at a dis
tance, wo may stato that tho defences
of Port Royal aro of a nature to resist
a powerful naval force.
The earth works are the best of the
kind on tho Atlantic coast, and the ar
mament consists of numerous guns,
some of them of lioavy calibre and
long range.
High Prices unit their Mural Effects.
A sober, thinking friend in the- coun
try propounds the following serious
enquiry: “Will not those high prices
force tho pooplo, as soon" as it w-ill
be Eafo to do so, to hunt a cheaper
market, eveu if it is to bo found
among their enemies? These exorbi
tant prices of tho necessaries of life
will tell largely on the patriotism ot
many in the South.”
Here is something to think of and
ponder. Thor® should be some rem
edy against extortion. A man does
not necessarily grind the public when
he seljs at high prices—lie may havo
bought at a high figure and bo mak
ing only roaoonablo profits: it is ho
who buys low and holds back until
the sufferings of the people enable
mm to ; prey upon-I them.—»SavoW*

Speculation nuc Extortion—Tariff* on
Whiskey.
In the Tenncssoo Legislature, Mr.
Jones presented tho proceedings of a
mooting of a portion of tho citizens of
Nashville, in regard to tho extortions
now practiced, at which tho following
resolutions wero adopted:
Jiesolveel, That the Legislature of the
Stato of Tennessee, be requested to pass
somo law that will prevent tho ruinous
prices now sought to be placed up. u
the staples of life, ovon if it shall In*
neoossnry to placo tho same in the
hands of tho military authorities.
llesoloeil, That a law or tux be levied
upon evory gallon of spirituous liquors
distilled from wheat, corn, rye, or po-
toes, that shall bo sufficient to prohibit
tho same during the present war mid
bloc.kndo, tho proceeds thereof to
bo applied to tho support of fami
lies with II ', of our solders oil tlio tent
ed field.
This is a movement in tho right di
rection. Lot tho Georgia Legislature
take this sul jeot under tholr considera
tion.
A Despotism Avowed.—In the recent
correspondence between Mr. .Seward
and Lord Lyons, tho former boldly
takes the ground that the Warsuspends

Wiu. Riant no uokk Cotton.—Wo
hear of some planters who declare they
will not plant Cotton next year, unless
(ho blockade is raised boforo planting
time. Wo should not wonder if this
bocomes n popular idea. What is tho
use of planting Cotton If it cannot bo
iiirolised by the commercial world at
irgo?—or, if tho commercial world
does not wish to buy ? Let our plan
ters raise provisions. They already
havo enough Cotton to look at. If tho
outsido world can c°t “long without
Cotton, our own pooplo surely can.
But to sny the least, wo havo a sufli-
oient supply on hand now to hut tho
Confederate States several years.—

to the effect that Governor Mugoilin
