Camp or 8m Oa. Regiment,
Centretiu.*, Va., Nov. 7, 1861.
Dear Courier : The wrltor returned
tc jmnp, after an absence of three
•reeks, ou sick leave, last Tuesday.
This place is seven miles from Mnttn&sh,
end on account of the recent heavy
r iing, and the Immense amount of wag*
«i.ing over this road—all the supplies
of this division of tho army coming
. ver it—this highway is exceedingly
rough, and, in some places, almost im
passable. A bridge, a half mile below,
having been washed away, the prosent
evossing of Bull Hun is at Mitchell's
Ford, about a mile above tho buttle
ground of July 18th. At this ford
breast works extending ui least a qUat-
‘cr of a mile both up and down tho
Run, on the Mannssa side, thrown up
by our troops for defence at tho lltlie
of that battle. The numerous scars
upon tho trees show that there lias been
r. fight hero also.
Shortly after crossing Bull Hun,
which is about four miles from Mnnassu
one begins to boo scattering encamp
ments—perhaps a half dozen Regiments
—but coming on a milo or so farther,
and getting upon an emincnco, ho sees
not a "tented Hold" merely, but ft whole
country full of groups of tents, und ap
pearing, at a distance, not unliko nu
merous flocks of clean whito sheep, all
lying in calm roposo and chewing their
• cuds” in tho full enjoyment of pcaco
and plenty. But ns one approaches
nearer, tho wrinkles upon the front of
"giim visagod war" begin to disclosa
themselves, and tho scene changes
from one of mere beauty to the stern
reality, which 1ms a majesty and elo
quence in its appeal to the feelings,
that arouses ones patriotism, lives the
i>lood, while ut the same time the
may be a tinge of horror at tho sight of
tho death-desling engines nnd instru
ments.
Of the exact, or even Approximate
number of troops, now stationed at
Centrevillo, it would not, perhaps, ho
discreet to speak, or what tho oxtont
may bo of tho preparations that aro bo-
ing made to close, to the enemy, this
main avonuo to Mnnassa, There are
doubtless men enough hero to whip
any amount of sheep stealing sneaks that
will attack them, and Massa Abo’s
plftvos will probably find this "is a hard
road to travel.”
In tho general movomentto this place,
which took place on tho 15th nit., and
included all tho lUgimonts in this vi
cinity, there was, according to all ac
counts, a very interesting time. Tho
3th Georgia Regiment, voeoived ordors
at 10 o’clock P. M., to strike touts, puck
lv.ess chests, baggage, &c., and be ready
to march immediately. Many of the
men were already asleep, and being
thus aroused, by such an order, unex
plained, excopt that our army was fall- ovor
lug back, it had rather a startling ef
fect. Tho Rcgimont was ready and
moved from tho encampment at one
o’clock A. M.; marched to tho head
quarters of the Brigadior General, where
they were halted until three, wlion they
ook up the lino of march for this place,
distant six miles. Tho whole country
was alive with moving troops, nnd soon,
i he road became almost completely
blockaded with wagons, which formed
train over a milo long. Being thus ob
.Irtioted tlio corps did not arrive nt
Centrevillo until 8 o’clock Wednesday
morning, the men having spent a most
disagreeable and fatiguing night. At
first the tents of tho different Regi
ments and Brigades wore pitched as
"closo as they could stick” to each
other. Binco then, for health nnd con
venience in getting wood, water, Ac.,
the different commands have been
enmowb&t scattered. Tho fitst week
alter arriving hero, tho excitement was
pretty well kept up, by tho constant
expectation of a grand battle. This
gradually died uway, and nothing has
actually occurred more interesting than a
great storm, last Friday night nnd Sat
urday morning, that blow clown sovo-
ml tents, and from the incident expo-
* uro, of which many men are now suf
fering with bad colds, slight pneumonia,
Tho first killing frost here, was about
two weeks sinco, but now tho foliage is
nearly all killed, nnd the weather is
cold nnd disagroenblo.
Dr. McFarland has resigned- and Dr.
Miller is now noting at our Regimental
surgeon. There aro but two member*
of Company A, that are much sick fit
this time. W, F. Booton, who is at
Mountain Top, and John J. Black, who
loft here this morning for Oordonsvilh*.
Both have fevers, hut neither was con
sidered dangerously HI at latest ac
counts. The general health <>f -tho
Regiment continues to improve.
Car No. 2. is now daily expected nnd
anxiously looked for. M. 1).

Fight 111 Fust Tennessee.
The Riulim-md Dispatch gives the
following particular* in regard to a
fight iu East Tonnessou:
Wo have received the particulars of
tho skinuish mar Carter's .Station, last
Sunday night, to which brief allusion
was made yesterday. Ill consequence
of private intelligence received at
Bristol of the doings of the Union
men ia Ka-.t Tennessee, Capt. Millet-
picked up a party of 22 young nun,
accompanied by Mr. J. It. Howard, us
a volunteer, anil started fiom Bristol
by tho railroad cn Sunday evening ut
0 o’clock. They sent lanterns .ahead
of tho train and found tlie track torn
up botween Wntaiigu and the Union
Station bridge, but the damage was
soon repaired, and they passed over
safely. Ai living at Carter's Stiiti.m,
they stopped and threw out pickets;
amt about midnight, the little scouting
party under Capt. Miller, started lo
oxploro tho country. They bin! pro
ceeded some three and a half miles
through Carter county, Tenn., when
they wero met by a pretty heavy fire
from rifle* and shot guns, which was
promptly returned, and tho skirmkh
was kent up with spirit fot half uti
hour. The bincolnitcs wero some 300
strong, ami constituted the advance or
a body of 800, stationed iu Elizabeth-
town, tho mountain stronghold of the
traitor*. We may state here that these
mon, (as has been since ascertained
from prisoners.) expected a reinforce
ment of 500 from Watauga county,
North Carolina, a d isa flee tod region
adjoining Johnson county, Tenn.
In the fight, the enemy were dtiven
out ot the woods, nine killed and five
takon prisoners. Tho rem’aimle
treated, and onr scouts
wards their camp.
On Tuesday I hud the pleasure of
meeting Dr. Robt. Battey, of Roma,
..nd Surgeon of tho tOth Ga. Regiment.
He is looking well but shows signs of
sovero and long piotracted labor. His
success in the Regimental practice is,
probably without a parallel in tho Con
federate army. Tho average number
reportod on the sick list, and actually
under treatment, for the past threo
months, was two hundred and thirty three,
r.nd yet, out of this large number, only
two have died. It is a groat pleasure to
record such an exhibition of sciontitio
skill and untiring industry, by ono of
■ ur most worthy and respected citi
zens.

It Is proven to every intelligent man

ually raised to ruinous prices. What
.rill become of the jH?oph- Utiles* they
tlo something to put a stop to specu
lation, no human sagacity can tell.
The Confederate Government lias
,-ufl’ered immensely, and stifle)s every
day from qa-dilator*. Thu hugest
swindling has been und W now prac
ticed by army con tractors. Men whom
it were gross outrages to call Southern
ers, are making fortunes from the treas
ure of out- voting Republic, and specu
lating ou the blood and health of our
gallant soldiers, who need comfortaMe
clothing to protect them aguiixt the
cold tvintei* of Virginia, Kentucky and
Missouri. W« ten turo tho asset lion
that the money thilspocki tod by shame
less speculator* in the sub* of UUi
worthy steamers, l*i d medicines, poor
uniforms, and stain piovisious, since
the commencement of the war, would
sufficient to furnish winter clothing
for the army of tho Fotomac. It is
even openly said by some of the specu
lating gentry that *»f fortunes cannot
now be made, another chance will not
soon occur, and tbut ns thousands are
engaged iu speculations, they sre no
reason why they, too, should fall to
embrace good opportunities. The ar
gument is, that if tho city be full of
burglars, who do a thriving business,
tho crime being winked at by tlio po
lice, overy man is justified in turning
burglar to better his fortunes. Najiolo-
on made short work of army specula
tors. Ho shot them.
And so. as time rolled on, private
speculators, taking their cue from those
in the Government service, commen
ced the game of extortion iu prices fot
the necessaries of life. Runners were
sent out to purchase every article
which there would be u demand 5 ami
in this city to day, imnionso quantities
cf provisions and other Ruleuule mer-
cliatidise, lio stored away, to bo bud lit
prices which would bring the blush to
the check of Shylock.
It a requites none of that prophotio
spirit which give tho Scottish soothsay
ers foreknow lodge of futuro events, io
see cloud gathering over the heads
of the speculators, which may break
with terrible fury. If ever a famine
cry is raised, wc would not be in their
shoes for the wealth of Cro*sus.
