Attention is being attracted to the
immense operations of the smugglers
on the Potomac, it is not generally
known that largo quantities of goods,
including war materials, are daily being
imported into tho Confederacy from
tho North. So notorious have these
•operations become, that the Federal
authorities sent a forco. of 1200 men
dqivn to the suspected points on the,
Maryland shore, about a week ago.
The enemy’s pickets extend a distance
of forty miles up the river. But their
vigilance seems to'bo in vain. Yester
day I saw a magnificent Confederate
flag, made by the ladies of Baltimore,
for tho First Maryland Regiment, C. S.

had just arrivod via the Potumao.' It is

r dt was a'mass of ruins. Since the late
manager took chdrge of the house, it
I Bad been declining in popularity with
the respectable part of tho community.
Mayor Mayo, in one of his Court
room harangues, pronounced it a “pjib-
lio nuisance.’’ Perhaps its destruction
fans saved the drama in Richmond.
Under the auspices of the (ate conduc
tor, tho beautiful act soemod doomed
to ruin for many years. The reporters
say that Mrs. Maglll, the late owner,
has expressed .a determination to re
build the house immediately. The
Theatre was built in 1816, and upon
its boards have nppeured : most of the
celebrated stars known to the theatri
cal firmament of this continent. It
was a strange corinoidonee.that exactly
fifty years ago the fire t6ok. place
which destroyed the old Richmond
Theatre aud burned so many among its

.Some large shoe manufacturers from
the South have just gone home from
Riohrnond, impressed with the idea
that “shoes won’t sell.’’ So great an
impetus was given to the manufacture
several months ago, by the:! knowledge
that the supply was giving out, that the
market is now getting to be overstock
ed. The Confederate Government lias
six hundred oases of nrmy shoes on
hand, over and above the demand, and
•the Go.yernm.eqt contractors aro fur
nishing it witliia constant supply of 200
additional pairs /per diem. The same
plethora is observed in the articlo of
clothing. In the clothing :buro'au /^f
the War Department, nro one hundrod

The donations of individual StatoB to
their own volunteers, have materially
lessened the demand on . the Confede

coats.
The proprietorship of tho Spottswood

tho present wcok, end that- tho main,
design of-the intended demonstration,
was to put an olid to the work of re
pair going on Upoll the 'Baltimore and
Ohio Railroad. • • -•» •, -
The success of .Gen. Jackson, if it be
such, is highly important in its results.
The tilpckado.of the Potomac, tho clos
ing of the canal, and the detraction of
tho Baltimore nhd ’Ohlo Rail Rond have
proved more disastrous to McClellan's
nrmy than all the defeats they have
suffered, and as long as we can keep
these important channels of‘communi
cation closed, wo mo producing embar
rassments to removewhich the Federal
Government liavo no resource. ,
In fact it,would not ho surprising if
the army wore compelled to evacuate
Washington boforo spring, and fall back
upon some point wlicro supplies can be
lind without the expense and difficulty
which at present attends their transpor
tation to tho 'capital. A portion of the
Federal forces aro said to liavo already
gone into winter quarters on tho Sus-
quohannah, but this is a point of little’
consequence, since the - balance still oc
cupy their several strongholds along
the Potomac.
As regards the destination of the
Burnside expedition; nothing new hits'

at' Annapolis taking in supplies and
a largo ntimber of the transports are in

though t hy many that the design of the

and this opinion is favorod by a late dis-
nitch from Gen. Mngruder, stating that
ilace. The result, hbfaever; is not to
>c feared. That veteran tifficer lias his
army in splendid fighting trim, and,
well drilled iiv the-management of their
heavy guns ; and with tho advantage of,
well posted batteries, on .historically
strong position and. impregnable en
trenchments,, ho. may ,defy,,,any ifprcp.
the Yankees can land.
It is just as probnble, however, that
the object of the expedition is .to open
the blockade of tho Potomac uy de
stroying the batteries at Evansport aud
clsowliore along tho river. If so, it
will receive the co-operution of the land
forces, which compose.the left wing of
McClellan’s army, which would march
upon us by way of Colchester, thence
across the Occoquan, und.N.oabsco, and
seek to approach Evansport through
Dumfries by tho rear.
In this oveiit, also, tho Yankees will
meet a warm and unexpected demon
stration, iri which, by the way, our
brave Hampton Legion will play an im
portant part.
Matters in.Wcsteim Virginia still re
main quiet. In fact the withdrawal of
a portion of our forces from that suc
tion and transferred to other acenes iu?
dicates that'the campaign there-is at an
end for tho winter. The loyal people
of that section, however, arwin a trem-
or of apprehension lest the onrimy find

forced marches enter the interior and
devastate tho vast amount of property
which has hitherto been, proteoted by
