Lciten tVem Itcvi W. PI* Crumley, I that have occurred :

in Richmond.
Richmond, Jun, 31, 1802.
Dear Confederacy:
The night is dark, the rnin pattering
against my windows, and Clio city buried
in oppressive gloom. The gas works
have failed ; and they have sent to
Georgia to procure the fixtures that
have failed ; yes, Georgia is the plaoe—
not the North.
Frequently I wake up, rub my eves
anil think 1 lmve b*en dreaming. The.
signs of terrible war that meet my eyes
everywhere—the strife, the anguish and
wailing—the scenes of blood unci horror
that have so quickly coverod this land
—this most civilized and christianized
of all other lands—here in the blaze of
the light of the nineteenth oentury

the Son of Pence- surely it is a wild
dream of a tioubled laiicy—a mere
night mure.
But stern facts dispel all musings
ai d dreams of fancy. Hero I am, it
my lone'y room, far from Lome. All
around me are the crowds of sick in
our hospitals, with whom I mingle
daily. 1 sec around me the pomp of
military pavude'aud the gleam of brist
ling bayonets. J he many itesolnU-
hearthstones in Georgia and the .South,
the pale nervous mothers, sad and tear
ful wives and sisters ; cities, towns and
country stripped of their mile inbubl
tants—nil rou*u me to a senso of the
horrible reality.
1, however, hold to the doctrine of
eternal progression, and that every rev
olution turns up a better phase of hu
manity. Tliis would seem to throw us
baoic, in the eyes of some, arid so it
does; hut it is like the receding tide.
Each wayo when expended, recedes,
and the ocean' teems to ho ebbing;
but the next flow comes a little higher
than the last. IVo are now on the re
celling wave; tiie next will Boon meet
us, and eariy us beyond anything we
have heretofore arrived ut.
One of tho principal benefits to ua.
which this revolution will work out. is
the true relut’im of the rwes to each
other—making tl*.e Caucasian tne Lord
of Creation, and the negro his inferior
and servant. A Bpicy controversy is
going on here now between a sharp
Irishinaif, Mr. McMahon, who lias writ
ten n book entitled; “Oriltsn and Con
trust,” allowing the ineffaceable infer!
ority of tho negro to the white map—
and Bishop Meaile, i ho lias reviewed
and criticised i;, charging the author
wall doctrines that t nd to lull le’ity,.—
I think the {rlslitrt inis more than a
match for the Bishop.
Tliis war will test men. I hope a
book will he kept in every county, in
whic.li will be recorded the names of all
who have gone or may go to defend
their country, and it would be a good
plan to keep another book in which to
record the names of those who could
have gone and have not done so ; but
have staid ut home and made money
by speculating upon the necessities oi
the people and the .'Government, and
grinding the facooi the poor, including
the soldiers and their needy families,
and made a prey of the resources of
the Government, which otherj more
patriotic have gone to defend
Quite a number of these*-sharks
have followed tho army but not to
fight.
I have pbservotl some fino specimens
of a new species here—fine, sleek,
handsome young men. with a teeble
effort at military tuskers, arrayed in
uniforms With brass hut ions, &c„ who
have been to a -.ni'itary school. They are
hanging round here to got appoint
ments iu 'he army —to make it a pro
fession-while their old associates and
every way their equals or superiois, nrq
in the camps and lmve toiled on fields
of blood, while they were drilling a few
squads, or following some lighter- in-
dooi employment, i engaged at all.—
Now. if the war department is smart, as
1 think it is, it will fill vucuncies with
pract vnl military men, who Lave seen
service, and who have gone into it
from patriotism, and not for a profes
sion.
Some of our no^Ie boys hero have
had their toes frost-bitten while guard
ing us from tiie Yankee invaders, till
they have sloughed off. while those pro
fessionul young gentlemen, seeking of
five, were lounging round hotels, with
kid gloves on their hands,
1 have made quite a collection of
humbugs and fixed them up in my cabi
net. They ure of ull ages, sizes, and
from all departments of the. service.—
Th.re uro some fire large fellows busy
ing aroui d. I almost fear to attack
them. Yet the; would make such rare
specimens for my collection. I jimy
or may not give you a chapter on
humbugs; it depends on circumstan
ces.
Well, now, a word about the hospitals
and the sick. There are fewer now in
them, and they are in better condition
thuu at any pret ious time since I came
here. There h is been but three deaths
this-week. I saw a report this evening
of the number that hare been in each
a long exhausting ride from Manassas, soldiers.

before witnessed there on any occnsii n.
in response to the v.icilerous calls he
appeared on the stage and addressed
them briefly,and tirsely, and then

greetings with the lud.es, citizens and
While on tho bill of mortality, I will
state that a respectable gentleman, just
from Centreville, says they have infer
tnation from Washington city, thut the
Yankees have lost, in killed, wounded,
and prisoners, including deaths by dis
ease, 500,000 men, since the war com
menced. Yours, very truly.

Then hear,the piteous .but truthful

In tho short space of a twelvemonth

they hail fired two or three times, our
cavalry charged tho enemy up tho
steep hill snip.
Cupt. Duncan, the commander of the
Lincolnites rallied his men twice, hut
tl ey finally fled in great disorder.—
D.mean was shot through the head and

killed by the enemy in Kentucky.
The enemy scattered among the woods
and ravines and finally reached iliac-

Seven of their dead bodies were found
by our forces.
Letters were found, which say that
in 20 days East Tennessee will be over
