of tho enemy's fleet arrived in sight of
Vicksburg yesterday ut noon.
• A boat with a flag of truce was stop-
icd by • our battories n. mile nnd a half
jelow, whore tho ferry boat went down
nnd returned with a summons from tho
Federal commander to surrender tho
city. The Mayor replied that tho city
was unprotected, but that it would
never surrender. Col. Atharty, Milita
ry Governor, and Gen. Smith, comman
ding tho Forts, replied that Mississip-
piar.s never surrender. Two additional
gunboats arrived late in the afternoon,
when the fleet moved over to this sido,
behind a pointy All is quiet this mor
ning.
PuTEnsuuna, May 19.—Eighteen of
the Monitor’s crow oame ashore nt 3
p. m. this afternoon at City Point, nnd
weio surprised by tho Confederate pick
ets, and ordered to surrender. Nino,

pistols and cutlasses—the others rush
ed to a small boat and pullod for the
Monitor. Eight of these were killed,
and tho remaining one lost an arm.—
Tho Monitor opened with heavy guns
to provent our capturing the boat and
the survivor..
The mon captured reached here nt
half-past six, and were marched through
Sycamore street to Gen. Huger’s Head
quarters surrounded by a great crowd.
One officer * was a Pay-Mnster—the
others Midshipmen. None of tho Con
federates were hurt.
Late Northern papers report the
sinking of Mound City and tiio Cincin
nati—gunboats —by Jeff. Thompson’s
Cotton boat fleet; nnd tho Benton was
badly injured.
These papers acknowledge a lostj of
one thousand killed, 2,500 wounded,
nnd GOO prisoners at tho Williamsburg
fight.

ser it-ltcg., says there was a heavy skir
mish on Saturday cveffing on tho Pur
dy road, between a portion of General
Smith’s command, and the Federal*
under Sherman. Our loss was six kill
ed and eighteen wounded; the enemy’s
loss unknown—supposed to be heavy.
Tho enemy is busy entrenching on
our rigjit, on tho Monterey road; two
nnd a half miles from Corinth. lie is
said to be erecting mortar batteries.
Gen. Mitchell’s column, from Hunts
ville, is reported this side of Florence
marching to Pittsburg Landing to swell
the ranks of the Federate opposed to
us hero.
It is reported that the enemy’s eav
airy are within nine miles of Pocahon
tas (a station on the Memphis k Char
leston Railroad, IS miles- west of Cor
inth.)
The Federal prisoners say tho enemy
dreads our falling back from Corinth
more than a battle, ns they cannot
stand tho alimato further Mouth. They
•oxpoot to starve us out by a long Beige,
and tlius'compel a surrender.
A skirmish took place at one o’clock
this.morning, in vliiob a number of
Federals were killed and wounded;
