LINES FOR MISSOURI.
Written and Dedicated to John Lowe Bartow,
by hia friend, .if. P. Divert.
Air— Missouri.
Missouri, Missouri, escape from your
for*,
Escape from just Hon von'a retributive
wors •,
Alienated, repelled by insult and wrong
Como take your station, whero by right
you belong,
That.oM serpent '‘Union,’’ with basilisk
eyes, ,
A Demon at heart, with his wiles and
his lies, ..... . .. , .
Is plotting thy ruin, and spreading his
toils,
To.cru-di your dear head in his manifold
colls.
Hear tha name of thy foe, ’tis self im
posed well; ;
The “Great Anaconda," begotten ofhollj
"The child of tho Devil," exulting lA
"Fan'of 'all subtilty—the foa fit all
right."- .. ■ ,
Bownre, Oi> Missouri I nnd call on thy
God,
For the fangs of this fiend, nre wet
with the blond
Of sain is and i»f martyrs, who fought
nnd have blud,
But striking tot} late, they are now with
tho dead.
Mount tho car of thy Stato, the steeds
are thine own,
The right to control them is tkino, thine
i lone ;
Let tho wheels of thy glory, speed o’er
tho orew—
AiregainTiiucolnitos dictating for you,
Political traitors would grapple tho
reins,
ind drive to perdition, for personal
gains;
Drive thou, or by Hector somo Achillea
shall bind
Thy corpso to his wheels, and drag thoo
behind.
Missouri, Missouii, thou canst not go
back,
Unless to the cross, and the gibbit and
rack.
Come, come with tho South, her coun
sel is best,
Her welcome is war, but a/terwardt reel:
New leap from your bounds, like your
own mountain streams,
Seeking Liberty where a Southern sun
gleams;
Salvation is coming, thy darkness is
past,
Thy day-star of glory is dawning at
last I
Your rivers, your prairies, your moun
tains and mines,
Exhaustless, eternal are Liberty’s
‘ shiines;
Thoy bid you the children of Freedom
go forth.
Spurn the power, the chains and the
threats of the North ;
Despising tho pomp and tho tinsel of
war,
Rude Western yeomanvy, come forth
as you are;
Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, you
see,
Your brothers are coming, resolved to
be free.
'lines
By a Tennessee soldier, on learning
that tho Federate had taken possession
of his homo. ? i.-, .
Memory, thou cherished gift td inn'll,
When, by thy pdwef’s, we lrnvel back,
And dwoll on scones ‘.hat no*V are gone,
Tlie heart grow faint and l am sad.
Oh! turn awhile, tlie contrast draw,
’Twixt s.oenos that now o’orapread our
land, •" '
And what they wfei-e lit days of yore.’
Man tuen allowed, at home, to dwell, ■
Secure beneath his own fig tree, ; -
And there his Grid, in peace, to praise,!
With none t’ molest or make afraid.
Thero mid the scenes of "home, sweet
home’” ’ : 1 ’ ' , -
He criuld, protection then afford
To kindrod spirits much beloved,-
But now no more on egrth.
But ah! sad thought that home once
dear, . ’ ‘
By ruthless hands lias been despoiled.
And tender nurslings yet unfledgod,
Are. homeless, frienclless wnnderenr
there.
Great God, wo ask, why is it so
That those afflictions so sovore, ,
Are on our once blest country laid. ’
If wo have sinned then wo repent,
Thy promised favor humbly claim,
For in the atonement .there’s relief,.
And in'Gilencl there is balm.
