GoitDOXS7ILLE, Va., Sept. 6.—Til©
mail and telegraph oquiuiuiiicntion be
tween Manassas and'Hihbmond has not
yet been restored, hence my delay in
sending you particulars of tho great
battles.
The battle of Mnnnssas has been
fought over again, and for tho seoornl
time a gieat victory has been achieved
over the enemy on these consecrated
plains.
. The fight.proper opened on Tfiurs- •
day. The enemy sought to prevent the
junction of Longstrcot’s forces with
those of Jackson, and for this purposo
i dispatched a heavy column to Thor-
I oughlaro Gup. A sharp engagement
ensued, in which tho Federuls were
drivftn bach with heavy loss. Toomb’s
and Anderson’s brigades were chiefly
engaged on our side.
On Friday tho enemy attacked Jack-
son at Gainesville, hoping to crush
him boforc Longs!reet could come’to
Ills assistance, but they wero again de
feated.
On- Saturday Longslreot arrived,'nnd
tho attack was renewed at 3 o’clock, p.
m., when a terrific battle ensued on tile
old battle ground of Manassas. Tho
fight continod until night, when the
enemy wero driven pell-mell across
Pull Run.
In this great battle Gen. Lonstrcet
commanded tho right wing, Gen,
Stonewall Jackson the left. Hill and
Anderson the centre, the whole under
command of Gen. Leo.
'I lie Federal force in this engagement
was seventy-five thousand, and their
loss was ten thousand. Tho Confede
rate loss was about six thousand, inclu
ding Generals Ewell, Jenkins. Muhone,
nnd Trmiblp, who were wounded.
We captured several thousand small
arms, twenty cannon, seven thousand
prisoners and several stand of colors.
Gen. Pope telegraphed to his govern
ment, ut fivo o’clock on .Saturday, that
victory was certain.
The Fedcrals retroatod to Centrovillo
and thence to Fairfax. Thoy ure badly
demoralized and supposed to bo retiring
to Washingion.
Stonewall Jackson engaged the rear
guard of tho enemy last evening and a
sharp skirmish .followed, resulting in tv
Conledorate loss of two hundred. The
enemy’s loss is much heavier, including
Gen. Kearny, who wus killed by the
49th Ga., anti his body brought into
our lines. Tho enemy were driven
buck.
Gen. Ilalleck was nt Centrevillo dur
ing the great battle.
McClellan was placed in chief com
mand of tho field, Popo acting as stib-
ordi nuto..
Tho Confederate army behaved with
great gallantry throughout the series of
buttles.
