August 2G, 18C2. .'
OulWl3thinst., nt 5 o’clock p. m.,
wo received orders to march into Ken
tucky. Joy seemed to pervade the
voi-y souls ot' tho entire command, and
they moved with ohcerfulness and ulao-
pity, anticipating a stirring time.
We left Kingston, Tonnesseo, pnssoa
through Montgomery, Morgan county
and Jamestown, l’rontiss county, Tenn.
At tho latter place a small purty or our
men dashod into town and arrested
some suspicious ohaructors. Here wo
rested a few hours fftiring n great ram
storm. Next morning nt 2 o’clock, wo
woro on tho mnroh to Monticello,
Wayne county, Ky, which wo reached
in a few hours, and had a lively time
with tho Home Guards, who were soon
dispersed, and we camped for the night.
At 2 o’clock next morning, the merry
,oices of our whole command gavo
noto of our departure Wo were off for
Somerset, Pulaski county. We crossed
Fishing .Creek, and scaled tho hills
with almost magio speed. At Somerset
wo found everything astir. A conside
rable quantity of olothing, commissary
stores and arms woro burned. Wo
were oft' sgain, and soon reached Lon
don, having marched 170 miles in 70
hours—nearly nil the way to the tunc
of Dixio, and others so common to
Southorn boys.
New" scenes opened to us at London.
Wo had or.o hour’s sharp “shooting,
after which the town was ours, with
205 prisoners, 170 wagons, 290 mules
and horses, with a large lot of stores,
arms, ammunition, Ac.—bur losses but
few.
At 11 a. m., a scouting party of 55
n, under Cnpt J. H. Strickland, ad-
in the capture of .a large number of

too great to moot, we marched back to

vanced 8 miles toward Barboursville
(in tho direction of Cumberland Gap
cautiously oxamining tho country, an
making efforts to learn the strength of
tho enemy. This party was attacked
by an infantry force of tho enomy, and
skirmish ensued. Our boys fell back ;
loss on our side three wounded. Two
of the enemy nro knows to be kill
ed.
Alter cutting the telegraph, wires,
and doing everything necessary and
proper, we marched three miles out
from London, and soon wo were all
asleep. Hero wo rested ttoo days. Col.
Morrison and Major Hhrper, with nine
companies (six of the 1st Georgia Cav
alry and three of Scott’s.Louisiana cav-
somo 300 men,) then marohi d in the
direction of Mount Vernon, Rockcastle
county, with one piece of urtiliery.
This proved to be a somewhat perilous
trip. The country is quite broken, and.
very difficult ior cavalry to move
through. The mnroh will never be for-
gotten by any of the party. The vigi
lance, coolness and valor of all tho
“ men and officers could n»t be surpass
ed. WVsoon passed the never-to-bo
forgotten spot where the Wild Cat fight
took place, and Gen. Zollicoffer lest his
life. It is a very strong pcsition. A
few miles further we camped for the
night.
Early next morning wo marched into
Mt. Vernon, capturing a number of
Home Guards and Federal soldiers, 70
wagons, 235 mules, and a large quantity
of commissary stores. Early’ iru the
day a small detaohmont was sent out
towards Crab Orchard, (Lincoln county)
The enemy were found to bo too
strong for us. Wo remained near Mt.
Vernon all day. and -night, and next
day fell baok 15 miles. Here we woro
joined by Ool. Soott, with 250 mon and
two more pieces of artillery. That
night we moved baok to Mt. Vornon.
and next morning re-occupied the
town. Early in the day skirmishing
took place botween the Soouts. Soon
our ontiro force was in lino of battle
North of tho town on the Crab Orobard
road. We advanced two miles, and
learned that a large force of tho enemy
had come up to Rook Castlo Creek on
the Riohmond road.
We then fell back, crossed the moun
tains, and next day pushed on towards
Richmond. ' Soon the enemy were re
ported to be in force near Big Hill on
the Riohmond Road. They drove in
our advance guard, and the fight be
came general. The’ Yankees had a
very strong position on tho side of the
hill, and under cover of heavy tirnber
and thiok undergrowth. The firing
was regular and the contest was severe.
After exhausting the supply of our ar
tillery ammunition, (whiah was small)
a foward movement was ordered by
Col. Scott. The ■ 1st Georgia Cavalry,
except one. company (A) had been dis
mounted and' under command of Maj.
Harper, made a flank movement to the
right, and succeeded in turning the
enemy's left wing. Then the Louisiana
Cavalry, amid a heavy fire mounted
and rushed to the charge. Company
“A” 1st Georgia—Ector’s Dragoons led
in the charge. In a moments the Yan
kees were completely routed and the
retreat became general.
After nursuing them a considerable
distance down the mountains, which
was quite difficult, it was discovered
. that had suceeeded in reaohing a strong
position, and determined on making a
stand. A creek van across the road,
Over it ijas a bridge, on whioh hod
been plrced some wagons blocking up
the passage: ■ Tho oreek flowed through
a ditch three feet deep, in . front of
• which was a'fence. Tho mountain was
within sixty yards of the bridge, along
tho side of wnioh was a trail, in which
a wagon had been placed to block it up.
After some firing, the order was given
to charge, whioh was gallantly done,
Eotor’s Dragoons, Maj. Harper, leading
tho charge. The enemy’s • firo was se
vere, but the charge was made, Hie
•hf® noe torn down, the ditoh crossed and
tho enemy driven from their strong po-
sition. After firing all their guns, the
little band ieli back across the ditoh
and halted, and reloaded. At this mo-
' rosnt Etdor’s Dragoons were .joined by
Lt. Col. Ci a lib and his command, and
the oharge was made in gallant stylo.-—
