and if our farmers would come along,
they could soon make enough' to' do

jjfi^-Tlie Lynchburg Republican of
tbo 20th, sayB:
A letter from an officer in General
Floyd,s Division, informs us that the
command is now at Logan Court House,
and is rapidly increasing in numbers
and efficiency. Largo accessions .to tlio
ranks are being made daily, by recruits
from tho surrounding counties, and the
sentiments of the people, freed from
the restraints imposed by the presence
of tlie enemy, is represented as vory
favorable to tho Southern causo. A
forward movement is spoken of at no
distant day.
A (turn for the American Can(«-te
rm c Government-
It would sonm, judging from the con
tracts now in tho linnds of shipbuilders
ut.d iron plate manufacturers of this
country, that tho Confederate Govern
ment is exhibiting ns much energy and
resolution in tho creation of nn iron
clad fleet, as it has manifested in tho
scries of battles which liavo thrown the
Army-of. the Potomac, defeated and
broken, behind the (.belter of tho de
fences of Washington. Besides tlio
commissions committed to other ship
builders b> tlio .Southern Confederacy,
mid which nro being pushed forward
with all possible dispatch, ’ a largo iron-
platcd ram is now being co.nhlr ucted on
tlie Mersey, without much' attempt at
concealment. Wo withhold tlio n,.mo
of tlie builder for prudential reasons;
but the fact is without question, and
the ram, from tho higli'character of the
builder, will be a most formidable op
ponent when equipped for sea; and
should tho blockade of tho .Southern
coast not terminate before her arrival
at Charleston, sue will attempt to pass
tho Federal cruisers with overy chance
of impunity. In addition t« this ram,
and otlier contracts held by our ship
builders—which, by tin; way, are b uhl]
fluttering to their reputation, nRd whie)
hitherto hiuo been financially discharg
ed in e:ch instance (wheu completed)
with scrupulous punctuality—a vessel,
now in Brunswick Dock, tlio name of
which we do not wish to give for obvi
ous . reasons, lias a cargo, consisting
principally of iron plates, on board,
ready to fasten on tho sido of .Southern
vessels waiting their arrival out at Char
lestbn. The owners of this vessel nre
imbued with Southern sentiments ; but
whether or not, wo are too neutral
tlie gigantic conflict raging mcioss tlie
Atlantic, to allude too pointedly to this
transaction
It seems very clear, from tho present
vigorous conduct of tlie Southern Con
federacy, tlmt tlio South, at no distant
period, will possess an iron-clad floot,
capable of coping ns successfully with
that of tho North as its nrmios have
triuinpliautly mot tlioso of tho Federal
Government, if but tho sumo dashing
spirit that lend tho armies of tho South
can be found to command it. Of ono
thing, however, wo think we can speak
with certuinty, and that is, that in the
vessels built on tho Mersey, -tlio South
will have an advantage over the Fede-
rals in strength of build, equipment
and invulnerability. The rest their
own courage will do, and we may yot
hear of tho gallant performanue of
more than one 290 before tho announce
ment of peace gladdens the heart of all
Europe. At all events, a few such rams
as the one now building on the Mersey,
would make tho raising of the Southern
blockado on easy task—Liverpool Daily
