Vonte Anecdote,
While tlio bill wns before tho House,
on Wednesday, to arrest the spread of
small pox, Mr. Black, of Floyd, relat
ed his experience in regard to a panic
many years ago. Ho ha.I started to
Augusta, and was taken ill at Greens
boro. The physician whom he called
in, tho moment he entored the room,
hesitated to approach his bedside. Go
soon withdrew, nnd b’ouglit with him
two other physicians, Drs. Foster and
Thomas, who examined his symptoms,
and after oonsultation declared that bo
had tho small pox. Tho report alarm
ed tho town. Mr. Blaok was spoedily
turned out of the Hotel, and was to
ken to an old.houso in the vicinity,
without comforts of any kind, where
ho was detained twenty-eight days bo-
foro lie was discharged. In the mean
time all tho country adjoining was ter
ribly oxcitcd. When he wns allowed
his liberty, ho proceeded on his jour,
ney to Augusta, by way of Powellton
Ha wns thore asked what had bocomo'
of tho small pox ntan lit Greensboro ?
Ho replied, that he lmd boen discharg
ed ; nnd not suspecting that lie was
tho individual who was confined with
the loathsome disease, his interrogater
remarked that tho putiont ought to
have been boxed up, with just bread
and water enough to prosnrvo life, and
sent homo ur.d »r a guard.
Now, after all this consternation, it
turned out that Mr. Black nover hud
the small pox. and that his disease was
nothing more than chicken pox, which
was quite harmless in its character.—
Ho related tho circumstance to show
the dnngor of giving to tho Inferior
Court, or other board, authority to send
to tho Pest House, all persons who
might bo suspected of having tho small
pox. Cases were related by other gen
tlemen on the floor, where fatal mis
takes had been committed in this way
Woliopo that in all instances due
caution will bo observed, and for this
objocl wo have referred to tho case of
the members from Floyd.—Milledgcville
until tlieirnewjjs&^teii'fleet is ready
The progress of tho
ork upon the now monitors, therefore,
becomes a matter of no little Interest

In tho New York Times, of Novem
ber 15th, we find tho following nrticlo,
which contains some important revela
tions upon Ibis subject. Wo com
mend it to the attention of our readers.
Chan. Mercury.
"The question has been asked so of
ten of late'when will wo lmve iron clads
ready to fight,’ that it is worth while to
answer it definitely. We believe that
the time specified in the contract bo-
tweon Mr. Ericsson and the govern
ment has expired, yet three versols of
his first nine are not yet launohed, nnd
not ono of tiiose that aro, can be called
ready for sea. Tlio Navy Department
lias sent on officers for the Passaic, but
that vessel will not bo turned over to
them until the problem is decided
whether n cannon can be fired without
protruding through a port hole. Yes
terday, at Greonpoiut, workmen wore
engaged in making an iron bex near
to tho port, in which the gun is suppos
ed to move.
"The woist of it is, that tho turrets
now ready for all the nine iron clad
bnUnrios are bored like tlio Porsaie’s.—
If Mr. Ericsson’s new theory is im
practicable, they will either have to bo
cut wider, or 11 inch guns must suffice.
Now the labor of boring through or
cutting away nn^’part of an item wall
cloven inches 'thick is so great that,
were all tlio craft otherwise ready for
sea, it Would detain them some two or
three weeks, perhaps more.
"Tho recent difficulties experienced
in firing the gun \vithin;the turret has
not disheurtoned tlio inventor. An
other trial is resolved upon before he
abandons bis idea, although tho gener
ality of naval officers do not see how it
can work. Moantime, the iron clads
uro wit nted, the timo is up, and tlio
public begin to look to the Navy De
partment for work.
"No new iron clad vessels nt present
progi easing can bo ready for hostile
duty this month, except the Passaic.—
If tho next, trial fails, she too will bo
delayed. There is no reason why four
of these vessels could not lie ready for
sea by tho 1st of December, although,
almost every ono ordered to them
expects to spo:. d their Christmas on
shore.
"Notwithstanding the good service
performed by tlio Monitor, her nine
‘sister ships’aro mere experiments in
some points. In spe3d thoy fail in eve
ry instance to come up to the mark.—
Tlio Pafcstt'C, in tolerable water, cannot
mukc more than seven knots, mid that
with a clean new bottom. In strong
scu tides sho would bo worthless, oven
for coasting, except she was towed, nnd
could not Uocp her hoadway. This is
only the fault of tho engine, which
seem to havo boon built exclusively for
harbor locomotion. Tlio Monitor’s
journey to Washington proved that ves
sels, whose bottoms collect liftti so rap
idly ought to have more powerful and
bet tor machinery than that on the l’us-
saic or I'ontauli.
"It is, therefore, obitous that per
sons expecting iron clad reinforcements
for our squadrons must be patient.—
Their victories cannot-be included in
tlio thanksgiving benefits.
"The reports in some journals about
tlio perfect success of the now vessels
before they nro tried, should bo taken
Uko laudanum, very cautiously.”

Tluso mills now manufacture, for the
Government, daily, two thousand yards
o'' henvy grey tweeds, besides largo
quantities of cotton duck and oil cloth.
Tho twoode is sold at $2.00 a yard, und
furnishes two regiments u week with
warm clothilg. Tho duck goes to tko
tout maker, and tho oil cloth is used
for knap sacks, loo.
In addition to the above, a quantity
of stripes, osnaburgs, shooting and knit
ting yarn, worth over $1,500 per day is
manufactured, and retailed Irom the
office on the morning after the produc
tion, nt about one-half tho price which
elsewhere such goods bring. The stripes
is soiling at 50 cents, tho osnaburgs at
40, and the sheeting at 35 cents. Be-
loro tho war this Company steadily re
fused to retail from this office, but lias
recently adopted this plan, so that its
goods, now so indispensable to the
country, nmy pass at fair prices directly
to the consumer. Tho Government,
it will be observed, gets about three-
fourths tho entire production of the
mills, and at about one half tho price
which similar goods bring clsewhero at

Tho example of this noble corpora
tion stands out in bold relief in these

probable that Gen. Buell is to be sent

understood, addo that journal, “ that
after tho occupation of Chattanooga by
