Camp near Frebericksdoro, Va.,
December 3d, 1862.
Dear Courier ; There is no exoiting
news to communicate from this place,
at present. It is reported that the Ab
olitionists are making preparations to
cross the river in two places. If thoy
make the attempt, the general feeling
in our army, so far as I ban learn, it is,
that they wili.be most signally defeat
ed, but, It may be not until after a very
sanguinary conflict. So far as one
“cooped lip,’’ as we are here, cah seo,
the preparations of Gen. Lee, are am
ple to meet any force’Burnside js likely
to bring against him. But of general
plans or movements, ono can knowbu!
little, lie is like the rustic, who,
while in the midst of it, said, he could
not see the city because of the houses.
The fact is, the very nearness of a few
objects excludes the mote distant and
perhaps more important oneB,' and thus
prevent tho possibility of generaliza
tion. By a general order, not only the
opljated men, but all the officers aro
also prohibited from leav ing tho quar
tors of their lespectivo brigade, ex
cept by special permit from tli^Mujor
General. If, in addition to this fact
you will take into consideration this
oilier one, tliut ’’camp rumors'* are so
numerous and conflicting, that none
of them cun bo believed, you will real
ize that we are lamentably ignorant o
the veiy scone in which we aro acting
The earliest news which we get in re
gard to matters about Fredericksburg
is through tho Riohmond papers.
At 3 o’clock P. M., yesterday, an or
der was issued for the mon to fall in
and form a line of battle, immedi
ately, upon hearing a signal gun, but
the gun hat not been heard yet—and
there is now no expectation of being
sturtled by it soon. '*
Out* regiment is supplied with fly
tents and by keeping up good largo log
fires at night, the mon keep quite com-
fortnblo. Tho other regiments nf the
brigade sent their tents to Hanover
Junction when we moved from Rapid
Ann River, and consequently they, now
have some reason to complain of the
cold, though the weather continues
mild for the season.
Our men aro making soma ad/ance-
men’s in their culinary attainments.
1 have wutched Messes making Soap in

of those articles, so essential to health,
it had become almost impossible to buy,
but the- hoys now make a very good
article lor “home consumption,” and
thus make a great suving to the govern
iiicnt.
Lieut. UuHtingtun, of the Miller Ri

ability from tho brigade surgeon and

bo discharged. Hois subject to fits,
and hod a severe spasm a few days
since. If ho only had tbo physical
ability, be would mnke one of the very
best of soldiers, lie is willing to .at
tempt more than he has strength to
perform. He has been discharged

The ilntliitig frun home arrived at
tho depot lliis_«vening, but has not yet
been brought to camp. C'upt, Scott is
expected to-morrow.
Thursday Mcrniso.—Lite yesterday
evening orders Wore issued to the com
missarjes to provide three days rations,
and for-the men to keep tlijs amount
on hand. At ten o’clock last night or
ders were received to be in readiness
to fall in at a moments warning, but all
remains quiet up to this time. There
is no doubt but that some movement-is
anticipated by our genovals, very soon,
ft was rumored last night that tho one
my were crossing the river at Fort Royal,
some 2? ritilot belw hero, in force.
The ground is now white with frost,
but the sun is shining beautifully, and
if wo have to fight or inarch, .‘his will
be u splendid day for it,
Thieving is becoming quite a com
mon critno in the army. Lust night
when our boxes come, a guard was sent
over to tiie railroad to protect them.
A scamp came and took up one of
them and walked off with qit, He was
ordered to halt, but neglected to obey,
and continued his course, with tho box.
The guard shot at, but missed him.-

The Folly of Seizing.
Our readers wilt rernember we havo
from the out set steadily opposed the.
principle of seizing private .property,
ap'd all attempts at regulating, prices
bv law. To-day we look upon these
matters as dangerous to our bleeding
country ns tho Yankeos ill arms. W tty
poi The reverence and rospeet for
municipal law, that is so -essential- to
the' well being of society, are passing
aivny ; men are becoming wild and fa
natical. The confidence in the laws nf
tho land to protect a man in the em
ployment of’his property and security
of his persotiitl liberty is ’weakening
every day. The great and unpardona
ble blunder or Gov. Brown In seizing
salt, on down to the taking of corn,
fodder, shucks, &c„ impressing drays,
wagons, horses, provisions, to., and
paying arbitrary prices for the sume,
by indiscreet and arrogant officials, on
down to tho crowning folly of the
Legislature in authorizing agents to
seize articles for the soldiers at less
compensation than the market prioes;
the establishing tho prices for mechan
ics and manufacturers to cha’rgo for
their goods produced, will do the coun
try tr.oro damage than any of its ad
vocates, wo will charitably suppose,
ever dreamed of. It awakens a rest
less spirit in the minds of tho many,
and dafys law and disregards wholsomo
restraints; it begets a feeling to take
that which belongs to another, and
creates in the mind of tho injured’u
distrust in the laws of the laud, and
tends to weaken his confidei co iu,
and support of the Government that
permits i’.s agents to abuse his private
rights. We know there ore some pe
culiar circumstances where seizures are
right and proper, but they never should
be made only when imperatively nee-
cssary. We also know that some gov
ernment agent* perform these duties
with becoming discretion ; then again
thoro are some who do not. But apart
from tho course of the agents, the
principle is all wrong. It destroys all
personal enterprise, looks up capital,
and shuts off importations ; it prevents
the bringing of articles of scarcity
from ivhcro they are abundant anti
cheap; it sours the people, and creates
a general feeling of dissatisfaction.—
