De'sperAte Fighting.
A correspondent of tho Riohmond
Enquirer at tho battle field near Ham
ilton's Crossing, writes that tho enemy
advanced steadily and boldly twenty-cn*
limes,.ami was aadften repulsed, with
dreadful slaughter and oarnage. The,
rises Yankee dead and wounded literally line
the ground as far as the eyo can reach.
We hud tho advantage of an oleyated
position and the “Stonewall.” The
enemy was therefore compelled to ad-
vaaoe in tho face of'.-a raking fire up
this iuclined plain only to meet tho
death-deuling fire which our men so
surely and steadily poured upon them,
Tho enemy fought well, Our forces
did better, and the result is, the Y*n.
keei, foiled in their "on to Richmond”
sohetne, lay upon their oars all day to
day without un effort to bury their dead
or alleviate the sufferings of the wound-
ed.
Great anxiety has been felt to know
Burnside's numbers. I have tue best
reasons for saying that he had with
him previous to the fight, within a
fraction of 200,000 men.
From Fredericksbnrg.
* Tiie news yesterday received irom the
recent field of battle tully oonfirms the
statement of the withdrawal of the en
tire fmi-oe of the enemy from the front
of our lines, and leaves little doubt that
his forces aro seeking another point at
which to make an attack. This move
ment by Burnside, we are satisfied, is
well understood by our able command
ing Gen rat. and will be met with that
promptness whioh so effectually eh, o'tod
the enemy’s advance lit Fredericksburg
on Saturday.
Parties who left Summit Station yes
terday represent that the enemy, in
foioe, hud been seen on tho Northern 1
side of the Kappahnnnoek in King
George county, nearly oppoBito Port
Royal, mid that the impression prevailed
that they would ntiempt a passage of
the river at that point, und-r cover
of the.r gunboats. We are not sufficient
ly acquainted with tho topography of
that section to state whether or not it is
ftivorablo to their operations.—Jiiek.
