Our cavalry have supported us in
fine style; they have taken about 2,000
prisoners und nn ordnance train, and
several trains loaded with commissary
stores. Oii Monday, Gen. Wheeler
with Allen’s cavalry brigade, and tho
battalions of Ilolmnn, Douglas und
Prentice, surprised tho enemy at La,
vergno and A’olonsvillo, killing several
capturing 280 commissary wagons, and
700 prisoners.
Gen. lfardeo commanded our left,
and Gen.-Polk the right-. Gon. Bragg
lias proved himself a skillful General,

tho contest be -prolonged. Gin- force
was only 40,000 men, hardly half of

I ran a narrow escape from the burs
ting of a shell. I look for a big fight to
day’or to-morrow. I havo slept none
for two nights, ns the trenches are full
of water fron^ the heavy rains. ’ I think

so close to the enemy’s sharpshooters,
thut nor.o can pass in or out, only in the
dark. 1 feel like I shall get through
sate. So far our entiro loss in killed
is about 20—only 4 killed in the 40th
Ga. On day before yesterday wo cap
tured 300, and 5 stunds of colors. The
slaughter of the enemy was heavy, this
morning there was a-truce for 4 hours
to allow tho enemy to bury their dead.
Their loss so far .is 1,000 -•killed und a
proportionate number wounded. Tlio
truce is nearly out and we shall open
on them in a few minutes.
It is the opinion that the gunboats
are leaving for tlio upper river—it may
be so. We have possession from here
down tho river to Port Hudson, 75
miles—their lower fleet beir.g below
that point—the upper fleet being about
20 miies above the city. Wo havo pow
orful batteries that stud the- high bluffs
lor neat- 100 miles. -Tlieso two fleets
can never unite. The fight; so far as
we are concerned, will all bo right; w,e
will whip them
The heights on the Yazoo aro vory
regular, and aro well lined with heavy
guns. The other side of tho river
low and marshy.
Tho Yankeo officers can’t make their
men charge our breastworks without
aaking them druunk. Thoso who
came in with the Hug of truce were
very drunk.
