A, T. Stewart Buying all the Cotton
Goods.
Tho-New York correspondent of the
Boston Journal writes to that paper as
follows: ■
Mr. Alexander T. Sleivnrt; the dry
goods millionaire of this city, has refus
ed to sell cotton goods at any price.
Ho has'recently been engaged in buy
ing tip all the goods he eonVipurchnse.
Empty storos have been taken, ware
houses ren’ed and filled to the 1 rafters
with goods. This done, he closes sales
and waits for coming events. It is
well known that Mr. Stewart’s connec
tion with the Government is sucli that
he has early information'of changes to
take place, of movements to bo mado,
and the signs of tlio timos are Within
Id’s vision, llo lias had tho monopoly
of ono kind of goods for which tho solo
has been groat, and the past year has
been to turn prohably tho most success
ful year he has cror known. Over
filteon millions dollars' worth of goods
ho has sold within tho year 1862, and
when he holds up and refuses to sell a
class of goods, men begin to open their
eyes. If wo have a battle and da not
win, cotton goods will run up like gold.

Permit ino to congratulate you upon
I ho promptness with Which you have
aiis.wered my.appeal for socks for bur
soldiers.
Wo have already, by dint of strenuous
effort forwlirclod > large shipment of
coots, pants, shirts, drawers, shoes and
hills, together with several thousand
pairs of socks, to the 14th, 17th, 24th,
27th, 61st, and 59th Georgia regiments,
in charge of Cnpt. Hood, A. Q. M..C.
>S. A,, and Mr. King of Forsyth, a re

bare footed and poorly clad soldiers.—
Every energy is being exorcised to meet
demands against ns, and I intend to
work myself night Wild day, and if need
be, those associated with me, till every
destitute Georgian is supplied with a
good pair'of slices and a good suit of
Clothes, at tho very earliest, possible

Onv other supplies arc coming in well,
considering tho barrenness of the coun

Let me urge upon tho frieuds of the

OmioNSjs France.—A Paris corres
pondent of tlio New York Times rep
resents tb'o Emperor as actively engaged
in preparing public opinion for Bis
mediation intervention (n American
affairs. All the ministerial organs have
received orders to harp constantly on
the fact that. the separation between
the North ami'South is fixed and final;
and all ot them are diligently obeying
the orders. Tito Moniteur led tho way,
and does not om'Qany occasion of in
sinuating the necessity of European
intervention. The other papers are
equally zealous. La Nation, the Em
peror’s private organ, contains an article,
supposed to. he from -the Imperial pen,
which strongly urges tho policy of inter
vention.
^ Tho Times’ correspondent thinks the
Emparor is favoring this policy to pro
vent the election of some thirty Demo
crats to tho French Legislature. By
involving tho country in a war with the
United States the Government will be
able to suppress all discontent at home.

The Right Sort of Advice.—The
Richmond Enquirer, in the course of
an article on the raising of the block
ade—which, like ourselves, it considers
a mutter oi' no importance—lays down
the following rule for the guitjanco of
our people:
It is wise to accept and take to heart
the fact that we have no friends on
earth, that so w.o may rely moro exclu
sively upon the energies of our own
people and upon tho blessings of the
God of Battles.
So soou as we Bhall have shown that
we aro in a condition to reciprocate
friendship, and’to repay it, with inter
est, we shall have friends enough bless
their hearts 1

being examined, and all the object,ion-
able matter cutout (possibly the truth)
thoy were allowed to be circulated.
