At Calumet, a town of some 500
inhabitants, situated on the Michigan
Southern Railroad, near the crossing of
the Michigan Central Railroad, tho
Reverend Captain William Copp was
announced to spoilt on Monday tho 2d
inst, The evening came, and witli it
the speaker. Tin* audience gathered.
Tho speaker took the stand, opened
the Bible before him, unbutloneu iiis
coat, took from his side pocket a navy
revolver, which ho deliberately placed
by tho side of the Sacred Book, and
announced that his subject would bo
"The Eiblo and the Bullets.” The
audience was a large one for that place,
and composed of Democrats and Re
publicans, expecting, when they came
together, to hear the truth, ’from a
divine who had been in the sorvieo.
They expected that ho, at least, woul I
deal,justly to all men—"nothing ex
tenuate, or aught set down in mulico;”
but what was their astonishment when,
after an introductory, to hear him pro
pose to take ft vote of tho meeting to
seo how many of those present would
“assist in bunging the copperheads of
that county." At this juncturo tho
Democmts present withdrew lo tho
strent, where the Abolitionists followed
them, assaulting them with pistols,
knives, bludgeons, and, in chon;, with
everything available—instantly killing
Robert Lake, ami seriously wounding

bloodshed it anticipated before the
affair is ended.
It is rumored in lutval circles at the
Nortii that the point in dispute, is in
regard to iho right of the Confederates
to the possession of tiie Morcedita,
which was actually surrendered by
Captain Stellwageit to Commodoto In

witli what truth, that Captain Stollwagen
believes that tho Federal Government
is bound in honor to give up the Mor
