Is .conjectured to aviso from the prev
alent oxcitemrht on tho subject of
cotton-planting. Tho proprietor has
always planted small crops, nnd his
last crop (the amount consumed) was
tho result ot only 1J acros to the hand*
mneh less than the law's allowance.
,i No private grudge, or personal con.
siderations, could have prompted tho
deed, for it will bo rradil\ accorded by
an appreciative community, that tlio
proprietor is a good and poncenblo ell!
sen, of a liberal heart and hand, always
acknowledging the claims of right and’
justice, tehsn proncrly pretenied, and nl
ways prompt arid willing to relievo the
necessities of the poor and distressed
No public considerations ought to have
induced tlie doed, for the claims of the
soldier, or tho soldier’s family, havo at
no time been ignored hy him. and all
the responsibilities of a cl then in thoBo

in view of tho exigencies of the times,
so far ns ho could honesjly read and
perceive them. In the exercise of hi R

due regald to popular opinion, and is
prepared' to mftko any sacrifices a
healthful public opinion, or the laws
of the land, may demand for tho good

While ho asks no praise Tor tho little
he has been enabled to do, ho would
not hesitate to compare accounts with
others whose course is tolerated, if not
approbated, .and whoso property is
secure. With unreasonable nnd
stubborn men, violont measures may
sometimes be safely tolerated in a
community. But even then they
do not always subservo tho purposes
intended, to any profitable extent. If
• they are perpetrated with the intention
of being looked upon as nn expres
sion of public opinion, and thereby
casting a practical lcproacji. upon the
offenders—they nro not to bo relied
upon as a faithful expression, as their
meaning is certainly ambiguous, and
liable to be construod according to.
prejudico and passion.
Buoh acts upon the property of' old'
and well known citizens, of established
character, reasonable -men, of tried
patriotism, honor and Integrity are
a great wrong—a public as woll as
private wrong. It is tho practical
development of a wrong and danger-
our spirit, tending to estrange loyal
hearts and to paralizo loyal bands; it
lends to aggingrinnism and commun
ism, and is well calculated to break
the bands of society asunder, and in
spire iu every heart mutual distrust
and suspicion. Its natural tendency
is to weaken nnd dsstroy rather than
strengthen and build up tho govern
ment- The class who, by greater
wrongs of viotcr.ce, seek to remedy
imaginary, or it -nay bo real evils of
minor itriportanco, are certainly ren
dering a questionable service to their
country.
fvvtch an eletuc-at, if encouraged, is
as much, if not more, to be foared than
tho evils of opinion. In tho midst of
revolution lot us not bo unreasonable
—let us becalm nnd self-possessed amid
tho storm, resorting only to violence
when all pacific measures fail to con*,
trol tho discordant eloruent of public
opinion. Let all understand and fool
their mutual responsibilities; let us
plant corn for the soldier, who defends
our proporty and our rights, and let
us, of our abundance, givo liberally to
the suffering poor around us, but in
tho namo of religion, patriotism and hu
manity j let us not resort to felony and
arson as arguments to sustain our cause
among our friends. There is no ne
cessity Tor it. Liberty does not ask
it, and Heaven will not approbate it.
