apathy with which the news of the re
cent battles was received in that city.
Tho Herald says that newspaper extras
containing tho exciting accounts, were
sold in much fewer quantities than in
any previous case of tho kind. Almost
simultaneously with- this news, there
was a prize fight on the Chesapeake,
between two noted bruisers. The de
scriptions of that were sought with
avidity, and the war neglected.

whom it might be of sorvice, that very
good and even yarn may be spun. from
cotton juit as it comes from the gin, as can
bo made from rolls. This has been, and
is now done vary successfully, by people
of more ingenuity aed industry than
those who ure continually grumbling

Stiff' The Tenth Georgia Regiment,
which went into the tyittle of Frcdev
ickshui-g with a force of two hundred
and thirty men, captured more than
double their number of prisoners and
guns. Its loss was twenty four killed,

Pascagoula, May 26.—A special dis
patch to the Era from Port Hudson,
dated May 22d, says:
"Ycs.erday Gen. Augur’s whole di
vision was engaged in a nine hours’
fight with the enemy. The battlefield
was Port Hudson Plains, four miles in
the rear of Port Hudson, on the Hayou
Sara road.
‘The rebels were thoroughly .whip
ped. They had one brigade of infan
try engaged, bosidos two batteries and
a considerable force of cavalry. They
had ambuscaded at every outlet from,
tho plains. They wore finally repulsed
with heavy loss, leaving a large numbor
of killed and wounded on the field.
"A flag of truce whs sent in at mid
night .from Gen. Gardner, asking per
mission to bury tho Jead.
“We hare taken about ono hundred
prisoners.
“The enemy was driven three miles
from his first position, and Augur's di
vision bivouacked for the night on the
field of b'attle.
Our lots in killed is twelve, and in
wounded fifty-six.

Russell actually formed and used, on
his own responsibility, a name for this
country. He spoke of it twice as the
Confederate States, without any reserva
tion, apology, or prefix of “so-called’’
or “so-claimed,’’ and during his whole
speech nevor alluded to us ns in insur
rection; rebellion or revolt: His Lord
ship's displeasure with tho Yankees
appears to hare inspired him with un
usual courtesy.

Richmond, May 28.—Tho New York
Herald of the 2uth contains Porter’s
otliciul dispatch to tho Secretaiy of the
Navy, which gives the particulars of
thecapturoof Humson’s Bluff on the
18th, with guns, tents, equipage of all
kinds, and ammunition enough to Inst
during the siege. Lest the gun carria
ges might ugain full into the hands of
tho cnomy, ho had them burned. He
blew up the magazine, and ‘destroyed
the works generally.
Lieut. Walker was sent up tho Ya
zoo, witli sufficient force to destroy all
the enemy’s prospects in thnt direction,
including the navy yard at Yazoo City.
On the mb he placed six mortars in
position, with orders to fire on Vicks
burg night und day, os rapid as they
could.
The intelligence of tho probable fall

and exchange, which re-acted on the

ism of tbe Lincoln administration,
which hns forcibly denied Vullandig-
bum protection in the United Stales,
and ne is obliged to seek it from Con
federate States.

earnestly for a continuance of the war,
without reference to the results, except
in their profits. We cannot say wheth
er the prayers of such persons avail
much or not, but it is a fact of fearful
significance that we are building up

The
Yankee raiders captured un
orderly of Gen. Trimble’s near Tolers-
villo, in Louisa county, Virginia, with
his servant and four horses, his pistol,
sabre and overcoat. About eight days
afterward, the orderly having been
released, he repaired to the spot where
he had been captured, and to his sur
prise, as well as pleasure, found the
General’s favorite mare, the pistol,
sabre and overcoat. The animal was
tied to a tree, on the bark of which she
bad doubtless xiib.-isted during that
length »t time. The Yankee captors
must have had u “big scare,’ 1 to have

the 26lh, has been received.
Under date of Vicksburg, Friday
night, 9 o’block, May 22d, 1863,
ordnance officer writes os follows:
“Our loss is not very heavy for the
position we have gained. .The rebels
make firm resistance, but 1 think we
shall have the place to morrow.
We have completely eneireled the
town, and to-night our men have their
oolors planted on the enomy’s works
and are lying on the exterior slope.
“The gun and mortar boats are in
front of Vicksburg working away.
“We have captured thus far 6,600
prisoners and 74 pieces of artillery.
“Grant is in good spirits.
“If we take Vioksburg we shall se
cure 15,000 prisoners With Pemberton

Richmond, May 28.—News from Mex
ico to tiie 2d of May state that every
effort of the French at Puebla has met
with disaster. Nine ineffectual assaults
have been made by the French. Their
losses aro put down at eight thousand.
The Mexicans were preparing to pur
sue the Frenoh army.
A St. Louis dispatch of the 25th says,
a band of rebel guerrillas capture 1 tho
town of Richmond on Tuesday with
the Union force which occupied it.—
They also plundered Plattsburg, and
took $11,000 belonging to the State.
A Murfreesboro’ dispatch of the 25th
says; .Large bodies of rebel cavalry
j are going. Southward. Breckinridge’s
corps has fallen back from its advanced
left their booty behind. No tidings, I position.

Regiments of Infantry and Batteries
of Artillery encircled the place of

enter the circle w ithout a special per
mit.
Voorhies, the President of the Con
vention, mado the boldest speech that
lias yet been delivered.
Resolutions wore .adopted that all
pow|oi rests in the' people, aad the
military power ia strictly subordinate
by the civil constitution enacted by
Congress, and can make no law abrid
ging the Freedom of Speech, the Press,
and the right to assemble nnd discuss
the a:ts of public servants. Tho dny
had.arrived when public servants were
setting themselves up above their em
ployers, and would have two wavs on
their hands. One on the rcb.-ls and
the other on the Constitution, and those
Northerners in upholding it, arrest
Vallandighaji for the exercise of this
right. Ilow hat his right been receiv
ed by the Indiana Democracy ? Just
disapprobation aa evidence of tbe first
and moat sacred right of a citizen
sft iokon down in his person. Indiana
Democracy will stand firm by Vallan-
digham in his defence of tho sacred
rights of constitutional freedom.
